The K-State Family Block Thingy

There is nothing dumber in college sports, right? Look at this stupid thing, a 4x4 with eye bolts and magic marker? Someone green-lit that idea and that makes me laugh.

I'd like to believe they used a woodburning kit or even better, some hayseed made a branding iron to stamp FAMILY on there.  But we all know it's a Sharpie Magnum or whatever knockoff brand of Sharpie they found Staples.

I don't like the way it's held in that pic.  Tre Walker was the best at holding that thing.  Maybe since he's on the staff he can teach these guys a thing or two about holding a 4x4.

because there's a place in the walkway coming onto the field where they hang it on a hook.  you wouldn't just leave your family block lying around on the floor or sitting on a shelf.

I've told this story before but it's combo-fan season so what the hell, let's do it again. When I was Vision Questing all alone in Montana by myself I decided to meet up with gE poster Porky Morgan at a local Missoula bar. We had never met and so neither of us knew what the other looked like. I scanned the place, trying to figure out which one was Porks, and then tucked near the back I saw a guy sitting at a table  by himself, staring at me. He looked me dead in the eyes from across the bar, reached down, and continued staring at me stoically as he lifted up a piece of wood above his head with both hands. On that wood, he had written the word FAMILY.

Tell me it was Ironhorse.  Loved that place.

If you're going to have a piece of wood that says "family" on it at least put more effort into it than finding a 2x4 laying around and sharpie it. I thought it looked lazy af when some of the students did it but actually making a 2x4 with poor calligraphy a focal point is a whole nother level.

While the block is dumb, the top 3 dumbest things in college sports belong to A&M.  1. Having a scoreboard outside the stadium facing the dog cemetery.  2. Midnight yell.  3. Students putting their hands on their knees during parts of the game to show they're ready to go in.

Amazing points here...to which I'll add 4. Having some sections of grass on campus near the stadium that are not to be walked on; everyone tells you this without any explanation.

College Station has a real David Lynch character to it. It's twisted and scary. I'm glad they are gone.

Pretty much all traditions are dumb until they get accepted. I mean, I actually think RCJ is a cool chant as long as there is a "whooo" at the end. But if I heard "Rock, chalk, Jayhawk" being belted out by the nerdy geology club, I would have lolled the hell out of it.
I once blew clove smoke in a guy's face that cut in front of me in the line to KJ's.

That's because Tre Walker was the first one to write FAMILY on the block. It was part of something the team did internally and then the AD ran with it, kind of like how they did with the 16 goals.
