Title: The K-State Family Block Thingy
Post by: AppleJack on August 05, 2016, 11:51:04 AM
There is nothing dumber in college sports, right? Look at this stupid thing, a 4x4 with eye bolts and magic marker? Someone green-lit that idea and that makes me laugh.

I'd like to believe they used a woodburning kit or even better, some hayseed made a branding iron to stamp FAMILY on there.  But we all know it's a Sharpie Magnum or whatever knockoff brand of Sharpie they found Staples.

I don't like the way it's held in that pic.  Tre Walker was the best at holding that thing.  Maybe since he's on the staff he can teach these guys a thing or two about holding a 4x4.

because there's a place in the walkway coming onto the field where they hang it on a hook.  you wouldn't just leave your family block lying around on the floor or sitting on a shelf.

I've told this story before but it's combo-fan season so what the hell, let's do it again. When I was Vision Questing all alone in Montana by myself I decided to meet up with gE poster Porky Morgan at a local Missoula bar. We had never met and so neither of us knew what the other looked like. I scanned the place, trying to figure out which one was Porks, and then tucked near the back I saw a guy sitting at a table  by himself, staring at me. He looked me dead in the eyes from across the bar, reached down, and continued staring at me stoically as he lifted up a piece of wood above his head with both hands. On that wood, he had written the word FAMILY.

If you're going to have a piece of wood that says "family" on it at least put more effort into it than finding a 2x4 laying around and sharpie it. I thought it looked lazy af when some of the students did it but actually making a 2x4 with poor calligraphy a focal point is a whole nother level.

While the block is dumb, the top 3 dumbest things in college sports belong to A&M.  1. Having a scoreboard outside the stadium facing the dog cemetery.  2. Midnight yell.  3. Students putting their hands on their knees during parts of the game to show they're ready to go in.

Amazing points here...to which I'll add 4. Having some sections of grass on campus near the stadium that are not to be walked on; everyone tells you this without any explanation.

College Station has a real David Lynch character to it. It's twisted and scary. I'm glad they are gone.

Pretty much all traditions are dumb until they get accepted. I mean, I actually think RCJ is a cool chant as long as there is a "whooo" at the end. But if I heard "Rock, chalk, Jayhawk" being belted out by the nerdy geology club, I would have lolled the hell out of it.

That's because Tre Walker was the first one to write FAMILY on the block. It was part of something the team did internally and then the AD ran with it, kind of like how they did with the 16 goals.

that is so stupid (getting rid of mob)

Also, the family block of wood itself is kind of like "meh, whatever" but the family push non stop 24/7/365 by the AD is creeping me out. I mean they sent me a postcard with a pic of the stadium telling me this is my family. that's weird.

I'm a fan of it at the end of games. More about the tone and ominous feeling it gives. Less about the words.

Okay, so you'll lean forward on the first beat. On the second beat, please lean backward (farther than normal upright position). Repeat for the remainder of the melody. If you are adjacent to another individual, encourage them to do the same as you, but on the alternate beats. Clap while making these movements!
Someday, we'll be known for what we've accomplished here. It'll be the greatest tradition in college football history.

Right but that's the point, cool tone but if the exact same chant started today it would be laughed out of existence because the words are dumb and it was started by a sedimentary rock club. But it's established and pretty cool now. Oddly it Clemson that rough ridin' drives around the stadium because they screwed up where to build the locker rooms? Lots of college traditions are dumb

K-S-U Wildcats is kinda cool when he's like on top of the press box at the end of a really huge game, but it's def. beaten to death. I think like right before the game and only at the biggest moments. Also, old Willies used to be waaaay less predictable with the pattern of it and I thought it was kewl as a li'l tyke cuz I never knew when Willie was gonna slow it down for a UUUUUUUUUUUU. Didn't always happen on his third time through the letters.

The block is made new each year as a teambuilding activity. They all sit down with a pack of markers color it up and tell what the block means to them and then name one thing they are taking on a desert island. each person has to recite what everyone else is taking on the desert island before naming what they will take. if they mess it up the block is burned and they start again.

It would be weird touting around a family block in front of 55,000 crazy mofos that aren't even your family.

I've never felt any sort of familial connection to anyone at BSFS who wasn't actually one of my family members. I mean, not even the people who always sit next to Mrs PC96's parents feel like family to me. Am I doing something wrong?

If that's wrong, then I'm wrong too.

I've had season tickets in 3 locations.  In each location I've never felt close to anyone and grown a strong dislike for at least one person around me.

I don't like the way it's held in that pic.  Tre Walker was the best at holding that thing.  Maybe since he's on the staff he can teach these guys a thing or two about holding a 4x4.

That's because Tre Walker was the first one to write FAMILY on the block. It was part of something the team did internally and then the AD ran with it, kind of like how they did with the 16 goals.

Yes, and it's fine. Internally it means something. I think it can be significant for a group of 120+ guys and help them come together. There is nothing wrong with that.

I don't mind the marketing of these things, but they lose some of the meaning when spread out over a bunch of moron fans. It becomes cliche.

But still, I'm fine with it.

Someone do this better than me, with it being the coaches and ADJC catching them maybe.

The thing that bugs me is they put the 16 goals into the entrance tunnel.  The next coach is either going to have to deal the previous coach's slogan his whole time here or be the bad person that covered up/removed the legend's stuff.

Hopefully PJ will be fine with it and add a non-permanent "ROW THE BOAT" above the exit.

They want the 16 goals to be equal to Wooden's pyramid.

Well they're obviously planning on Sean being the next one to coach...

Or maybe Venables comes in and uses them too?

16 goals, yes. He merely added two more goals when he came back. There was 14 originally.
