While the situation at OU needed to be dealt with swiftly, I should say that I should no longer be astounded by the broad brush that some at GE paint with.   It has to be goEMAW'ing, right?   The immediate sewing of individual actions into the fabric of entire communities, groups, institutions, states and even countries is, in a word; astounding, albeit fascinating.

Was it an individual action? It sounded like a collective action of a busload of kids to me.

Then why did only 2 guys get kicked out of school?

They had the misfortune of being identifiable by the video camera.

If girls is the answer to all the questions ITT, it kinda makes it even more sad, imo.

i think dugout is being facetious.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

Yeah, I'm sure Boren would have loved to expelled them all but has been discussed, just expelling the two visible on the video is dubious enough legally.

First post in this thread, and I haven't read the whole thing so forgive me if this has been stated.

I think what happened at ou sucks, I don't think those kids are/were true racists though. They're the product of an environment that empowers boys to think they are men, and teaches them to act how they perceive men should act. Ie taking advantage of women, abusing alcohol, and acting racist because they're middle to upper class white kids (for the most part)

Personally i don't see the point of frats in the modern college society beyond parties and heavy drinking and gurlz. There will obviously binge drinking on college campuses regardless of Greek affiliation, but I do think Greeks promote that culture more so than non Greeks. I have no facts to back that up, just how it seems to play out over and over again.

yes I lumped in girls with parties. Frats throw parties to get girls, right?

it's different at different colleges. i don't think kstate owns any off the houses.

I believe this to be accurate.  I have also always been of the belief that the houses are not technically "on campus" as well.

To answer those who chose not to join a fraternity as to why most do, it's just like any other decision really. The good outweighs the bad. As with any living arrangement, there are pros & cons and we all made our decisions based on what weight we put on each perceived benefit or negative aspect.

My opinion of frats is pretty jaded as someone close to me was date-raped at a frat once. (not at ksu) My view of the frat culture and the people that support it is pretty low.

Note: I'm not saying all frat dudes are bad, just that the people that continue to perpetuate the "get 'em drunk and take 'em upstairs" attitude, are about the lowest of the low in my book.  I also think that most guys that do this to women wouldn't do it if it wasn't supported by the institution.

However, the one guy in my circle that was in one(don't even know which) used to get super worked up if you called it a Frat rather than a Fraternity.  He said that was similar to calling our Country a $!#*.

People who say that are douchebags, and it's not something I'd call someone out for, but the word 'frat' makes most people think of all the negative stereotypes of a fraternity.

"Frat" has a negative connotation because of the shitty behavior that people have associated the word with. If you want to end the association, you have to change the behavior, not the word.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the first sentence of your second paragraph, but if you think that "most" men on campus are in fraternities, that is pretty far off base.

I think making all houses 100% dry would be smart for KSU (even though Pat Bosco insists there aren't problems with Greeks at KSU).

Yep.  I'd have no problem with that.

I think you two just set a record for amount of lame old-fogieism in back-to-back posts. Good grief

Fraternities and Sororities do far more good than harm

They raise/donate hundreds of millions of dollars to local charities, volunteer countless hours in the community and have far higher retention/graduation rates the geeds.

It's pathetic that the acts of a few are used as an excuse to punish the institution as a whole. Maybe we should just close down the university instead of one facet of its community housing. So stupid
