However, the one guy in my circle that was in one(don't even know which) used to get super worked up if you called it a Frat rather than a Fraternity.  He said that was similar to calling our Country a $!#*.

People who say that are douchebags, and it's not something I'd call someone out for, but the word 'frat' makes most people think of all the negative stereotypes of a fraternity.
"Frat" has a negative connotation because of the shitty behavior that people have associated the word with. If you want to end the association, you have to change the behavior, not the word.

That has nothing to do with it, you mental midget.

They were very useful in getting laid in the olden days.

I think making all houses 100% dry would be smart for KSU (even though Pat Bosco insists there aren't problems with Greeks at KSU).

Yep.  I'd have no problem with that.

I think you two just set a record for amount of lame old-fogieism in back-to-back posts. Good grief

Fraternities and Sororities do far more good than harm

They raise/donate hundreds of millions of dollars to local charities, volunteer countless hours in the community and have far higher retention/graduation rates the geeds.

It's pathetic that the acts of a few are used as an excuse to punish the institution as a whole. Maybe we should just close down the university instead of one facet of its community housing. So stupid

Who would have thought that rich white boys being caught on camera singing about lynched niggers would be the social issue that united fsd and I?

I don't think those kids are/were true racists though. They're the product of an environment that empowers boys to think they are men, and teaches them to act how they perceive men should act. Ie taking advantage of women, abusing alcohol, and acting racist because they're middle to upper class white kids (for the most part)

Good one! I'm not saying what they did is excusable. It's not. But do you really think they'd be singing that song, or any song, about n***ers if they hadn't been taught it?  I don't know them so I can't say for sure, but I doubt it.

Again, what they said is terrible and they should be punished to the fullest extent. But the institution they were a part of clearly played a role in forming their thoughts/actions.

True sdk. True.

I don't want to look like I'm defending those kids. That wasn't my point. My point was just merely that they are a product of their environment.
Which, to an extent we all are.

I think I get what you meant. They aren't going to be out there openly mistreating minorities. They will just do it in secret with their buddies. Just as I'm sure their parents weren't lynching anyone either. But their parents, family, close friends, still did enough to persuade them that these actions are ok. They are still harboring these thoughts and feelings and will undoubtedly pass said things on to others. Racism behind closed doors is still racism and does nothing to further society.

You don't think it's possible they saw some upperclassmen do it and get cheers for it, which made them want to be those guys?

The fraternity gave them a large group of like-minded people and the safety of "secrecy" that they wouldn't have had in many (any?) other college social situation. They aren't going to get the third floor of Haymaker or the ultimate frisbee club to participate in something like that.
