At this point, it would be tough for the big 10 to surprise me with anything they did. If I would have told you a year ago that they would go get Rutgers and Maryland and expand to 14, you all would have said that's ridiculous...I would have said it was ridiculous too.
No one believes that the SEC and big 10 are really happy with 14 teams.
So far, the big 10 has had really varied reasons for expanding. Nebraska brings no new subscriptions for the big 10 network, but is a national football brand enhancement for the big 10, and met the AAU criteria when they joined. Maryland is AAU and brings subscriptions, and decent basketball tradition and not even on the radar in football. Rutgers brings NOTHING except for arguably subscriptions for the network and meets the AAU criteria, but many people have been skeptical about how much Rutgers will really bring.
