The Big East may vote to dissolve.

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/11/22/report-big-east-schools-may-vote-to-dissolve-league/

I personally feel like we're going to see at least 1-3 of the Catholic basketball schools join the ACC (Georgetown, SJU, Villanova), and the remaining non-football schools (DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall, Providence) will probably hook into the A-10 or something.

I realize the A-10 already has 16 teams, but these teams are kind of right in their wheelhouse.

I think the Big East voting to dissolve would be the spark that sets off major changes in mid/minor basketball conferences. There's been some minor shifts nothing as significant as there could be. I could see the non-football schools making a deal to keep the Big East name and snagging some of the upper tier A-10 schools. If that would happen and the A-10 doesn't just dissolve it could create a significant shift.

LOL, they're the Big East minus Louisville under this scenario.

FWIW:

Quote from: thedudeofwv
Update:

UNC and Duke have decided to not let the ACC go down without a fight. They have scheduled a meeting next week to add UCONN & Louisville and force a grant-of-rights. They have conceded that UVA, GT, FSU and Clemson will leave but will fight to keep NC. State which is bad news for the Big 12.

Also word from the Big 12 is that the conference has agreed to expand at least to 12 and will go to 16 if there are schools available that add value. All the Big 12 presidents and coaches are on board with expansion and want it to happen quickly. The Big 12 is currently discussing inviting UL to head off the ACC. UL may actually be the glue that keeps NC State, Miami and perhaps even Clemson in the ACC.

Quote from: thedudeofwv
There are many factors that make the the Big 12 unlikely to stand pat. The Big 12 was anointed as one of the big 4 by the SEC and they must respond and keep pace. So I would say  there is 0% chance the Big 12 stands pat at 10 but the timeframe is even more important. if the information I received today is accurate the Presidents have instructed Bowlsby to act quickly.

Only two conferences can get to sixteen, SEC big 10.  This thing is staying at five conferences for the foreseeable future.

There probably isn't a sense of urgency right now.  The only thing that can happen is that ESPN could try to overvalue the ACC even more (and I don't think they can find another $20-$30 million a year needed to get these schools another $1-2 million per yer), and they could push for a grant of rights to justify that expense.  However, I don't think some of the schools there are going to be willing to sign a GOR knowing there's still uncertainty in the landscape.

That said, what happens with the Maryland settlement is going to be a big deal.  If it proves to be $30+ million, everyone may sign the GOR to get whatever money they can.  If the Maryland settlement is around $20 million, there may be movement by at least one or two schools.

He is descending into madness.  He pretends that WVU is playing an active role in crushing the ACC.

They'll still bundle for core stuff, but the question is whether or not BTN will be in the same bundle as FSN.

Personally, I don't want to have to pay for YES and BTN to get FSN.  If they ultimately get pushed to a different bundle, that's where the BTN becomes susceptible to taking big losses.

IIRC, there is some connection b/t the big 10 and the YES network, so I would imagine it will be in the same bundle as YES and delaney will just laugh in everyone's face.

I think the connection was that they'd try to bundle BTN with YES to ensure that people in the NYC metro area all had to pay premium for BTN to watch the Yankees.  That part was genius.

But my point is that when the time comes, I don't want to have to pay for BTN and YES to watch the Royals on FSN.  At this point, I think both live on the Sports Tier, outside of the basic stuff.  I don't know for sure because I get pretty much everything because I bought one of those comprehensive bundles years ago on a promotion with a price lock when U-Verse was just getting started.

News corp who owns the Big 10 Network just brought YES, it is the sole reason Rutgers is in the Big 10.  As has been explained already, there will be some minor tweaks to how we currently purchase TV, but its absurd to think we're going a la carte.  There is no push for it from the consumer or the providers.  The only people you hear complaining about "having to buy Lifetime" are single males.  Fact is most subscribers are not individuals, they are households with varying tastes.  The trend to have a la carte options digitally is a good one, good enough to satisfy the vocal minority who wants such a thing.

The push will come from people who don't care about sports but are being forced to subsidize sports. Not from single males pissed off about Lifetime. The response of those people is to "cut the cable" and get all their entertainment from the internet. I think the point of the guy I was quoting was that the cable companies would react with ala carte pricing to lure those people back. If they don't let people opt out of buying ESPN they are going to lose a lot of customers.

Sports fans are hooked on live sports and cable is the only place you can get most of it. We aren't the customers who will cause the change.
