The ones they sent me were the two crispest bills I've ever seen.  Thats just for the initial, small survey.  If they end up choosing you, they give $20.  Maybe it was $30, I cant remember.  Its kinda fun really and 95% is super simple.  The one thing that sucks (and makes it really not worth your time) is having to list all your channels.  ex- Fox, KSAS 24. eff that.

Sorry, I did that without thinking about it.  There is a 99.9% chance the Champions Bowl will be the Cotton Bowl, but I meant to say Champions for now.

So, if you think their coverage of the SEC is obnoxious now, wait.  They have a joint network that they'll need to get off the ground with them.  It's going to get worse.

We're now the only conference in the "Power 4" that won't have it's own network.  The ACC kind of has a defacto network because they sell all of their rights, T1-T3 to ESPN, which then re-sells them to Raycom for local distribution.

However...it would appear that Fox is gradually sucking in all of our T3 rights for various schools (OU, Tech, Baylor, KSU) to kind of create a de facto Big 12 Network.  As time goes by, I wouldn't be surprised to see more conference centric programming on the LHN because, as someone who gets it, it's horribly boring because they just simply don't have the content to support a 24 hour network.

I think they'll eventually show high school games.  They're serving a mostly Texas audience, and nothing would be better for them than to broadcast big Texas high school games.  Honestly, when looking at the history, I think that was originally a part of the plan to really make ESPN a lot of money and get carriage on all major cable platforms.  But, obviously, they hit a short-term snag.  So, ESPN is probably going to force that down our throat, eventually.  I personally don't care, because it doesn't affect us at all, but Baylor, Tech, OU, OSU, TCU, etc. are going to throw a fit.

I also think that if the network gets really profitable and attains major carriage, they'll carve off and sell time slots to the Big 12 for weekly magazine shows, FCS programming, and possibly programming for other schools that FSN or their T3 carrier may not pick up.

Eventually, I think the LHN will grow into a state of Texas network with high school and smaller division (possibly JUCO) sports being played. It's just going to take time to hash a lot of that out.

FYI - Also, to give people an understanding on the flexibility of our content and the value of the BTN for the conference members, in 2011, the Big Ten paid out $24.6 million to its members.

The actual distribution from the Big Ten network to it's members was $7.2 million dollars, which was down from the previous year's payment ($7.9 million).

The ESPN contract with the Big Ten is worth $10 million per year, and there are no Tier 3 rights in the Big Ten because the conference owns everything.  So the total television payout in the Big Ten is T1 with ESPN/ABC, T2/3 with the Big Ten Network, the Conference title game, and arrangements to show Big Ten basketball games on CBS.

So, to put this into perspective, Kansas State, based on numbers I've seen in this thread (I think from dax) say that if we were to get $20 million a year right now, we'd be somewhere in the neighborhood of $23.8 million (or something like that), and that's before bowl payouts and all that other stuff.

The odds of most schools in the Big 12 making more money than the Big Ten, at least over the next several years, is probably pretty high.  The Big Ten does take select basketball rights, Tier 1 football, and their conference championship game to market around 2017.  Odds that all of those items lining up together is pretty high, so they'll most likely try to get a bundle deal.  They are locked into the BTN until 2032.

The moral of the story is that the Big Ten has a few years to get back to being a true power conference in football and men's basketball, and if they don't, there is a chance they'll lag behind the rest of the big four conferences in revenue.  Not by much, but it's something to think about long term.

The conference network, right now, makes sense for a lot of schools, but eventually, either the Pac-12 model or the Big 12 model will most likely win out.  There's too much sharing in the single conference network strategy to win out long term.

If things stay on the same course they are on now (unlikely, but still), our game at UTSA in 2015 will probably be on LHN. 

They already have a deal with UTSA, but with UTSA and North Texas joining CUSA, I wouldn't be surprised if in the future they cut a deal with CUSA to air 20ish of their games every year.  In addition to the 4 Texas schools, CUSA will also have 1 in Oklahoma (Tulsa - and I already get LHN on AT&T in Tulsa) and 2 in Louisiana.  FWIW, the CUSA deals with Fox and CBS Sports expire in 5 years.  Also, with the new playoff system & the percieved need for big schools to up their schedule toughness coupled with the high prices schools like these charge for a single game, more of these 3 game 2-for-1 deals will be made with these schools.  These return home games at these schools could have some value so it's not constantly UTSA-ODU games.

They already are. Texas State has two games on it this year. Although technically they got those rights from the WAC, not Texas State.

Absolutely.

Nothing is going to change the fact that Texas is going to make much more money than the rest of us (including OU).  Nothing is going to change the fact that every single year, they're going to get the best players in Texas.  Nothing is ever going to change the fact that every other school in Texas will ALWAYS play second fiddle to them (including A&M).

It is in our best interest to make sure they're happy as the flagship institution of the Big 12, and that we're associated with them.  It's a matter of survival.
