An automatic escalator clause of $2 million per team added in expansion. This means if the Big 12 goes to 12 teams each team gets $24 million, 14 teams each team gets $28 miilion, 16 teams each team gets $32 million. This opens the door for it to be attractive for other teams to leave their conference and join the Big 12.

I'm a nerd.  I tried to do the math.

Currently, the rumored contract is worth $200 million per year, divided 10 ways so $20 million per team per year.

Add 2 schools to expand to 12 and each team automatically increases their take to $24 million per year?
12 teams X $24 million each = $288,000,000.
Do FSU and Clem make the Big 12's contract worth $88 million more than before?  A Big 12 CCG would be worth $20 to $25 million, similar to the big 10 and PAC title games so that's part of the increase.  Maybe, possibly FSU and Clem add the remaining $63 to $68 million value?  Probably not.  I bet it would have to be FSU and Notre Dame to get this pay raise.


And if we add 4 schools to expand to 14, each team would automatically increase their share to $28 million per year.  No way.
14 teams X $28 million each = $392 million.
This means that adding FSU/Clem/Miami/MD would essentially double our contract?  From $200 million per year to $392 million per year.  No possible way.


Expanding to 16 is even more ridiculous.  If the ACC teams were worth this much, they'd be getting mad cash from the newly renegotiated ACC contract.

Well we aren't privy to the wording of the contract yet, so lets assume the GoR actually has some backbone to it.  If it does, than any school can move to whatever conference they want to do, however if the rest of the schools don't approve the move, than the Big 12 retains TV rights to their home games.   Now, does that mean all TV rights?  Or just Tier I/II rights?   If just Tier I/II, than technically Texas could move all of their home games to the LHN.    However, Texas isn't going to reel in $35 million on their TV contracts, and I don't see an Independent Texas (as that could really be the only way they could go, because no conference is going to add them if they can't get their Tier I/II rights) getting another $20 million out of TV to make up for the Tier I/II losses.   

But as I said, if it means ALL TV rights, than the conference is pretty much solid for the next 13 years.

Plus if the new BCS Formula comes into play, than an independent Texas has to make the tourney, or they lose out on big money there as well.

My understanding is that when we signed the GOR, we signed the rights to all of our games over to the conference, except for the one game per year that the conference allows each school to market on its own.  If Texas wanted to leave, they could play one home game on LHN and 11 road games every year for six years (or 13 years).

James Barker, on a Columbia radio station. He was asked about expansion rumors pertaining to the big 12. He said they have not been contacted and if they were, they would politely decline. That they have "absolutely no interest in leaving the ACC and if they did, they certainly would not consider the big 12". He said the travel expense would be enormous, they do not feel Clemson would be a fit for them in any manner. That they are excited about the future of the ACC and the possibility of their expansion.
