MU's going to have to develop a whole new recruiting strategy. If other Texas schools other than Big 12 teams are refusing to schedule A&M because they don't want to open up the state to the SEC, don't think they'll jump at the chance to play a team with a smaller stadium and more travel. Not sure how that "You can play in Texas once in your college career" is going to work with their Lone Star recruiting base.
yeah this is going to radically change the athletic culture.
The more I think about it, the more I believe that actual mizzou admin wanted to stay and the Governor and his cronies wanted the move.

Yes, because that's what happened.

Still can't believe there wasn't more political opposition to him, especially KC area conservatives

I assume with their 7 team divisions, some recruits will never get to play in texas.  But not sure how that will work yet.  It's so embarrasing for them that they have to play in the east.

By the way this emphasizes how important it is that they maintain a presence in KC.  They are about to start over from scratch.

Mandel bringing it strong:

The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference are pleased to welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC," Florida president Bernie Machen said in a release. "[Mizzou] is a prestigious academic institution with a strong athletic tradition and a culture similar to our current institutions."

With all due respect to Dr. Machen, the only part of that last sentence anyone could back up with facts is "academic institution." Missouri's "strong athletic tradition" consists of winning its last conference championship in football in 1969, despite playing in leagues largely ruled by two contenders: Oklahoma and Nebraska in the Big 8 and Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12. Now it will be joining a conference in which five different schools have won BCS championships.

As for "a culture similar to our current institutions?" Saturdays in Columbia, Mo., in no way resemble the scene Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. But don't worry, the Tigers are joining the East; few cultures are as similar as Florida and Missouri.

In its mad quest for television sets, the SEC, presumably intent on starting its own network, has irreparably diluted what had become the nation's premier product. At its core, the charm of the SEC was that it really was one of the last conferences in which all 12 schools were geographically and culturally similar. The same scene we saw Saturday night in Tuscaloosa takes place in similar variations every week in Auburn, Baton Rouge, Oxford and Athens. Visiting fans make road trips in droves, because they can. Missouri, on the other hand, is an average 600-plus miles from the rest of the conference. Walk around an SEC tailgate lot or tune in to the Paul Finebaum Show and you'll quickly learn just how poorly this move is playing with the constituents.

STAPLES: Questioning Missouri's conference move? You'd have done the same thing

New members Missouri and Texas A&M won't threaten the continued dominance of Alabama and LSU. They are likely the league's next South Carolina and Arkansas, the former of which took 20 years to reach its first conference title game, the latter of which made its first BCS bowl last year. But paired with the NCAA's recently approved stricter admissions standards and the SEC's own move last spring to cut down on oversigning, the league's golden era is likely drawing to a close.

Its top teams will still sign the best recruits, largely because those players live in the South. But we may not see too many squads quite as loaded as the pair that butted heads Saturday night. And while they'll never stop tailgating on the Quad (Tuscaloosa) or the Grove (Ole Miss), a little chunk of the league's signature charm will die the first time South Carolina plays a conference road game in the other Columbia.

The SEC obviously timed Sunday's announcement to avoid overshadowing Saturday's all-important game, but the news made for an interesting juxtaposition nonetheless. Saturday represented all that's been great about the SEC the past five years. Sunday touched off everything that will be awkward about the league in the future.

Poor Mizzou. MU now the fat kid that all the cool/good-looking kids let hang out with them. Sure, you're a 2nd string offensive linemen on the high school football team and you say something funny once in a while, but none of these hot chicks are ever gonna bang you. You we're better off hanging out with the nerds...and banging fat chicks isn't really all that bad.

Friend talked to a big Tennessee fan this weekend who was pretty excited about aTm joining the SEC. Friend asked what he thought about Mizzou joining. The Tennessee fan was like, "what? Mizzou is joining?"

Backs up what Dodd was saying a few weeks ago about Mizzou not registering at all with fans down at LSU.

If I didn't have such a strong dislike for Mizzou I would actually feel kinda sorry for their fans. Leaving a conference due to their overestimation of themselves and some imagined slight by the University of Texas, only to go to a conference that only wants them for their TV sets since they'll never pose a challenge to the conference's athletic powers and are willing to play in a ridiculous geographic divisional construct. They're joining a conference whose fans, despite Mizzou's best efforts at attention-whoring over the last few weeks, often don't even realize that Mizzou is joining and don't care when they find out.

Mizzou will be on the outskirts of their new conference and will be an afterthought to the schools and fans in the conference and the media that covers them. Meanwhile, their importance in the KC market will be greatly diminished due to their abandonment of the traditional rivalries and the fact that they will be playing in a conference without ties to KC and will be playing few, if any, meaningful games in the conference. Playing Vandy for 5th place in the SEC East has zero draw, as opposed to playing KU for 5th place in the North, which at least had some regional/rivalry interest.

There's going to be a significant backlash in about 5 years by Mizzou fans pissed about decreased coverage and prominence of their institution. Being the SEC's whipping boy isn't going to be so much fun after the first round of watching their team get its ass kicked by Alabama and Florida and South Carolina and Tennessee. And if Mizzou thought they were slighted in the Big 12, they haven't seen anything like what they're about to see in the SEC.

Coverage of Nebraska sports fell off a cliff in KC once they went to the Big 10.  I know Moo is the Div I power in the state that Kansas City is a part of, but I would put Moo's local influence to be right in between being completely ignored and the coverage they have now.  In other words, Moo is going to be less relevant in Kansas City.

I'm not sure if people in SEC country realize that interest in what happens in their conference is really pretty much isolated to the Southern states.  People in the Midwest are probably a lot more interested in a Pac 12 game than any SEC matchup.  Their TV package is weird too, being mainly on CBS with just one game a week.

The Northeast really doesn't GAF about the SEC.  My perception is that they mainly pay attention to the Big 10 and Big 12.  Really who cares about Alabama or LSU or Auburn?  You could put them all in a barrel and pick one out.  "Great Auburn will be the SEC representative this year."  It's not like Oklahoma/Texas where people can see there's a big difference between the schools.

Florida is a notable exception, as it has its own brand separate from the SEC.  Mizzou will sort of be an outlier as well, but if they get pounded every week nobody will care.  I will be interested to see how the Spread fares with a good QB in that league.

I think the "they'll get pounded" is a stupid freaking argument against the move. They will not be significantly worse than they were in the B12.

I still think it's kind of a dumb move, just because they won't make significantly more money but they give up an awful lot for travel, cultural fit, turning their back on KC, etc. It's just weird.

this
Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

while it's stupid to say "they'll get pouded and that's why they shouldn't do it", i do think it's fair to point out that they probably will not recruit as well in their new league and they just moved from a ten team league to a fourteen team league making it quite a bit harder to win a league championship in any sport even if they do continue to recruit as well. plus all that other stuff you said. some people just want to feel important for some reason and i think mu fell into this boat.

How should I feel when Missouri gets beat in the SEC?
1.) Like I feel when Colorado gets beat in the Pac12
2.) Like I feel when Nebraska gets beat in the Big10

IDK, I kind of like that within an 8 hour drive, I can watch a Big 10, Pac 12, SEC or Big 12 game?   :dunno:  We are truly at the intersection of collegiate athletics.   :excited:

it will suck if they don't get bowl eligible so the Big 12 can't throw them way down the selection pecking order.  don't see them getting more than 6 wins anyway so it's not like it's possible they'd get snubbed.  maybe we can let ISU get bowl eligible so Mizzou does get snubbed.  :dunno:
