Per sources: B12 still has pulse. Kansas schools successfully playing leverage game. When Manhattan says jump, Austin says how high?

EQUAL REVENUE SHARING IN B12? Desperate times call for desperate measures, and eight of the nine remaining members of the Big 12 appear to be in agreement to have equal revenue sharing from the Tier 1 (ABC/ESPN) television contract that runs through 2015-16, multiple sources said.

The move, which is being pushed by Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds, according to sources, is aimed at trying to hold a beleaguered conference together after a week of intense acrimony.

The Big 12 has never had equal revenue sharing from its Tier 1 television rights in the 16-year history of the conference. In a gesture of unity, the Big 12 agreed in April to equal revenue sharing from its second-tier television rights with Fox upon signing a 13-year, $1.17 billion deal.

Unequal revenue sharing in the Big 12 has long been a complaint among the schools with the smallest athletic budgets in the conference. Currently, the unequal revenue sharing in the Tier 1 rights allows the schools who appear on TV the most to collect the most money.

But that would change under the new proposal, sources said.

The sources said there appears to be consensus among eight of the nine remaining schools in the conference to share Tier 1 revenue equally. Oklahoma has yet to weigh in on the matter, sources said.

TEXAS A&M AND SEC TALK: Texas A&M, meanwhile, remains staunch in its focus on becoming the 13th member of the Southeastern Conference. A&M officials had a conference call with SEC officials Friday at noon to discuss the Aggies' path to the SEC.

"The events of this week have not changed our plans in regards to the Big 12," an A&M official told Orangebloods.com. "Our primary focus is on the SEC at the current time."

Two sources close to A&M said reports of the Aggies considering going independent in 2012 while waiting to join the SEC are not valid because A&M officials haven't even gotten that far yet.

DON'T MESS WITH TXDOT'S SLOGAN: Sources said Friday the Texas Department of Transportation ordered Baylor officials to cease and desist using the "Don't Mess with Texas" slogan in a BU website post that read, "Don't Mess With Texas Football." It was a post that asked fans of football to reach out to Texas A&M, Texas and Texas Tech for "clear-headed thinking."

"Texans must stand up and call the leadership of the University of Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech to clear-headed thinking about the state's future.

"Readers can click the 'Take a Stand Now' button and email regents and decision-makers at Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech."

BU officials complied and had it removed within 30 minutes.

BU TICKETS RETURNED TO A&M: Texas A&M officials said Friday that Baylor had sold only 830 tickets from its allotment of 3,850 for the Oct. 15 A&M-BU game at Kyle Field in College Station.

A&M officials said only Idaho sold less (264) among the seven visiting teams playing at Kyle Field this season.

WHAT'S NEXT? The SEC has indicated it won't budge on admitting Texas A&M until it is released from legal liability by schools in the Big 12.

Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State have indicated they will not release the SEC from such liability. Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have indicated they would not sue the SEC.

Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin has said he feels like A&M "is being held hostage" by certain members of the Big 12.

Two sources close to Texas A&M have said the Aggies' options include delaying their joining the SEC until 2013 and going independent in 2012.

One Big 12 administrator said the SEC would be released from legal liability and Texas A&M would be free to leave the Big 12 after the 2011-12 academic year as long as Oklahoma was willing to recommit to the Big 12. Others in the Big 12 have disputed that contention.

It was one week ago today that OU president David Boren sounded alarms that the Sooners were actively looking at other conference options and raised more questions about the long-term viability of the Big 12.

Boren said OU would have a decision about its future within a window of three days to three weeks. The rest of the conference is still waiting to hear from the Sooners.

Last Friday night Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe held an emergency conference call with the league's presidents - excluding Texas, OU and Texas A&M - extolling those on the call to "work on Texas," sources said.

It was Beebe's belief that the Pac-12 would not invite OU without Texas and that if UT stayed in the Big 12, the Sooners would stay.

While it appears OU has its eye on the Pac-12, there is doubt about if the Pac-12 would be willing to invite the Sooners right now. Commissioner Larry Scott has indicated the Pac-12 won't be the first conference to initiate expansion and possibly trigger mass realignment in college athletics.

Two sources close to the five-member Big 12 expansion committee said they were close to reeling in two schools to replace Texas A&M before Boren's comments shook the foundation of the league.

Those schools are believed to be BYU and Pittsburgh. Louisville was also a school under consideration by the Big 12, sources said.

All three of those schools would stand to enjoy a huge pay raise in TV revenue in the Big 12, where they would stand to make roughly $18 million next year. Schools in the Big East make less than half of that, and BYU received roughly $2 million in TV revenue last year.

But the recent instability in the Big 12 has undoubtedly shaken the view of any potential new members.

Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis tried to do some damage control Thursday when he told reporters OSU was committed to the Big 12. Last Saturday, OSU booster Boone Pickens said he thought the Cowboys would be members of the Pac-12 and didn't think the Big 12 would be around in five years.

“I think (the Big 12) can exist,” Hargis told CBSSports.com. “I don’t think it’s a feat accompli A&M is gone. Obviously the SEC had a string on their bid.”

The question is if equal revenue sharing in TV money will instill enough confidence in OU to recommit to the Big 12. Or will it take more?

Stay tuned.

Guess who has a better overall record in the Big 12?

I really hate those worthless dog worshippers.  I mean, seriously, they can go eff themselves.

Hint: It's not Texas A&M

Yeah, but if it works in the long run, it kind of neuters Texas a little bit, which is probably better for the sustainability of the league overall.

it furthers my agenda and the big12 staying together if we aren't.  the more pressure on ou the better.  the more stories about how everyone's united now and wants to share and how camelot is just around the corner if only OU would come to the table, the better.

If Fitz doesn't have any information, he doesn't have any information.  Their business model is not to dig or rock the boat.  It's to write feel good stories that get your run of the mill K-State fan to plop down $9.99 a month.

Texas is dead set on hanging onto the Longhorn Network. THat's why UT is fighting so hard for the Big 12. If Texas A&M and OU come out of the B12 and mass realignment ensues, UT will look for every conference option that would allow them to hold onto LHN.

And I mean EVERY conference option.

Whoever wanted to be creative and find a way to allow UT to keep LHN - the Longhorns would listen to. UT does not want to go independent. Period. That would be a last resort.

The Pac-12 may have the toughest revenue sharing for Texas to navigate and hang onto LHN. If Texas ended up in the Pac-12, it would likely mean turning it into a regional network and sharing revenue with another school (possibly Texas Tech) and sharing revenue with the Pac-12.

In other words, the Pac-12 has dropped down on Texas' list of potential landing spots if the B12 breaks up.

Fitz says realignment talk is stupid.  Writes a lot of words about how stupid he thinks it is.

When I sat down to write a column on the future of the Big 12 and conference realignment, I wanted to say something that hadn't already been said. Then I realized that my colleagues in the media had already said it all. No really, they've laid out every possible scenario short of the University of Texas leaving planet Earth because it has evolved well beyond the capabilities of the rest of mankind.
What's striking about that scenario is after a few weeks of this realignment chaos, that doesn't sound too farfetched.

In my younger years, I was fascinated with conference realignment. I would have welcomed mega conferences, super conferences, ginormous conferences and even big old honkin' conferences. Now, I live in the real world.

Sorry, honey, bigger isn't always better.

OK, full disclosure. When it comes to college athletics, I'm a little guy. I'm a graduate of Kansas State University and the publisher of a magazine (Powercat Illustrated) and website (GoPowercat.com) covering K-State athletics. K-State is teetering on being eliminated from the game when all the seats are filled in these new Super Duper Conferences. I am left to watch K-State fans suffer through a major meltdown, surviving by clinging to two simple pieces of comfort: At least they're not Iowa State or Baylor. If the realignment dominos all start to fall, those two Big 12 schools may be in a world of hurt.

(Never fear, K-State fans, if the Big 12 does not stay together in some form as I have contended it might this year as I did last, then the Wildcats will survive this round of cut downs between the haves and have nots by moving into a western division of the Big East Conference. Come to think of it, being in the western portion of a league named east sums up this silliness.)

What's fascinating to me is watching members of the media spin all the possibilities. They float this speculation in writing, on the radio and in the alternate universe known as Twitter. Some are openly rooting for four, 16-team Oprah-like conferences. I bet they will also be the first to complain when they realize how much traveling they will now be doing or -- I bet they didn't stop to consider this possibility -- that their newspaper or TV station is no longer covering all of their school's road games due to the increased travel expenses.

Those are real world effects of being in a conference that spans three time zones. If they can't afford to travel for business, most of the fans following the school they cover won't be able to do so for pleasure.

"What certain members of the media are discovering, though, is that there is plenty of attention being paid to those who spin the wildest tales and persist in realignment talk. Find a source, even if it's Otis falling off his barstool, and serve up another scenario. You will be retweeted until your hunger for relevance is completely sated."
What certain members of the media are discovering, though, is that there is plenty of attention being paid to those who spin the wildest tales and persist in realignment talk. Find a source, even if it's Otis falling off his barstool, and serve up another scenario. You will be retweeted until your hunger for relevance is completely sated.

For example: @LifeofFitz: An unnamed source says SEC considering University of Madrid because it's south, east and there are a lot of TV sets in Madrid.

Folks, that's 140 characters or less of sweet, Twitter magic (not to mention a shameless plug for the mess I call my Twitter), but it's as realistic as some options being pitched. ? FYI, my source was one of my dogs, who just barked and it sounded a lot like he said, "Madrid."

Sure, four 16-team conferences clear the way for a college football playoff, but that can happen now. I mean right now. All that needs to take place is for university presidents to say yes, but they will point out that it isn't good for the student-athlete and it will likely cause too much missed class time. Now, weigh that logic against conference realignment, where we find these same presidents in a television money grab, willing to send their student-athletes in all sports (not just football) on absurdly long flights to play conference games in their new Hungry, Hungry Hippo Conferences. Missed sleep, missed class time and missed fan support doesn't seem to matter all of a sudden.

I'm really not sure how this realignment orgy will end, but I know this: I now trust some university presidents slightly less than serial killers. They are liars, thieves and have made it abundantly clear that they don't really give a damn about the welfare of their student-athletes. They want money, buckets of money. And they want to leave their mark on the world of athletics, something they've sought since those repeated wedgies they received in junior high.

Here's a news flash: University presidents often sport egos that would offend your clich?rrogant star quarterback. Folks are now getting to see that played out in the realm of athletics instead of it being hidden in the halls of academia.

Jumbo Conferences now seem inevitable; even if a few years down the road they will likely seem ridiculous. After all, Oklahoma wouldn't be joining a 16-team Pacific conference, it would be signing up for an eight-team conference with a scheduling agreement with another eight-team conference on the West Coast. Or it would be moving into a four-school pod that is aligned with three other four-school pods. There is simply nothing big and sexy about the sound of that.

Pending realignment isn't only wrecking regional common sense, but it will end long-standing rivalries and do untold damage to other college sports, including men's basketball. Yep, stop and think about that. Creating a world where 64 schools stand absurdly far above the rest of college athletics in terms of finances will mark the end of the romance of an NCAA Tournament where the field already is larger than 64.

But so what. We need this mistake to be made, and it needs to be made in the next week or two. Or sooner. Or today. Or before I'm done writing this column.

What's a shame is college athletics doesn't need fewer schools in the major football conferences, it needs more. There should be more seats at the table, not less. And not only do college fans want a football playoff, but the presidents should realize that the vast amounts of money made off such an endeavor shouldn't be used to put a second TV in every football player's locker and to add a 43rd optional uniform, but to help fund all of the college sports that often play in anonymity, for all the right reasons.

A football playoff, with a bracket that extends beyond 64 candidates, could serve a noble purpose. Sadly, there's nothing noble about this rush to realignment. It's mostly revealing, sad and, frankly, disgusting.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Yeah, the seats A&M give to visiting schools are the worst. You can usually find much better seats at lower prices on stub hub. I'm betting that game will be very hard to get tickets to after these recent developments, though.
