You guys are obviously experts in grass growing so I have question. My yard is in pretty good shape, but def has some spots. I overseeded the crap out of it right after I aerated this fall. Turns out, it stopped raining and was hot as crap for an entire month the days after I put the seed down. I ran the sprinklers and tried to keep up, but it was to no avail and I gave up. What's the spring play here since none of my fall seed came up? Will it come up? Do I wait for it to come up before putting pre emergent down?

Go Cats
it could germinate in the spring but it won’t.

next time if you really want it to germinate, cover it with peat moss and water it several times a day

My neighbor seeded his yard from bare dirt this spring and kept it it alive. He watered the crap out of it all summer and fall. I didn't think it could be done but he did it.

So basically I just wasted the money on seed and should just put down my pre emergent in the spring per normal and try to reseed again next fall?

probably the best bet.  if we have a long spring before it gets too hot, you can reseed early and this time do it correctly and it will germinate.  the key is getting the root system in place before the super hot/cold temperatures.  you water a ton for a couple of weeks then switch to a few days a week and you soak it, that will make the grass grow deeper roots which will help it survive the summer/winter.

it just works better in the fall because we have more time to do all that stuff before it starts freezing.

also you need to put down 30-0-0 or some other high nitrogen fertilizer when you put the seed down too.

It's been impossible to do this the past 2 falls. It's been so hot and dry. I should probably try later in the fall next time. It's in my back yard and on a bit of a slope that just gets hammered by the sun all day. Without rain, it's impossible to keep it wet enough unless I run the sprinkler 24/7. May just cut it out and put some sod down this spring.

the peat moss that you put over the seed is meant to protect the seeds from birds and other crap but also hold moisture.  I put a lot on there and it seems to work well

Paid for one of those big leaf sucker trucks to come by and suck all the leaves from the curb.  Watched it do its thing tonight.  It was badass!!

Our neighborhood has a thing where they come by a few times every fall. It rules. My yard is covered weekly in the fall so it would be 6000 bags. In the past they only came by once or twice so I would rake and blow them on a giant tarp and pull to the front. Not the worst thing, but it was quite a bit of work and lots of trips. Especially sucked if pickup weekend was a rainy one. Now they come by more often so I just blow them to the middle and suck them up with my rider and dump in the front.

Now that i'll have a thicker lawn this year after overseeding last fall and had sprinklers installed, i decided to upgrade to a 42" zero turn. Took it on its maiden voyage yesterday. Holy crap it's gonna save me so much time.

what kind did you get? i'm still on the robot fence, but my yard is too big. I have an old ass John Deere rider that probably should have died like 5 years ago, but it keeps starting every year so I roll with it. I'd love a 42" zero turn. The other thing is how much bigger they are and my current rider barely fits in my garage with the cars.

How big of a lawn do you need in order to justify a riding lawn mower?

More of a time thing than an effort thing for me. It takes me about 45-50 minutes to ride mine. I've pushed it several times and its a bit. That doesn't include the edges that I need to use the pusher or weed wacker. At some point i'll get a robot, but my kids are also getting old enough to do it, so i'll prob hold off.

My neighborhood is like 50/50. I use a push mower and it takes me about an hour to mow my whole lawn. Two of my closest neighbors use riders and one other also uses a push.

I hire a kid to mow and edge every other week, then I just mow on the off week.

My guess for a rider is somewhere approaching two hours for a push mower, I’d prob start looking into a rider.

Yeah, that is probably where I land. I'd say that if your lawn is an 1.5+ hours, and/or has fairly significant elevation changes and/or you are getting older and at risk of passing out in the heat then a rider mower is pretty justified IMO if you plan on doing yourself and not paying to have someone else do it.

At my old house it took me 45 minutes and I had a non-powered electric mower and it was totally fine (for me) cause it was light and quiet and I could listen to music/podcasts as I did it. If it was a powered gas I'd be done in probably 30 minutes, and a rider mower simply would be too "big" to fit through many areas, but would probably cut it to 10 minutes. Just seemed overkill to do that.

I ended up getting a Cub Cadet ZT1 42" from a local dealer. I was between that and a Toro timecutter. My lot is .6 acre. Probably only .4 grass. It was definitely a time decision for me. It was taking me a little under 2 hours, with a good percentage weeds. With a better stand, it is going to take 2 hrs +.
Only problem is my backyard is rough AF. Going to have to decide this fall how to best tackle that.

Our small lawn has become increasingly uneven with some slopes and valleys. Seems like every major rain adds to it. Is there a simple fix to even it out or am I better off paying some landscapers what I’m sure would be in the four figures?

I've had two. Some cheaper one at Lowe's (B&D perhaps). Worked fine for less than a two acre lot.

I went with an EGO Power+ when I was trimming four acres.

Would recommend either. Just make sure you get the second battery whichever way you roll. Sucks ass when it dies and you have another fence to go.

EGO is easiest. Cut. Insert. Smash button to wind it.
