Why does it take so many people to run a submarine?  Should be possible with a crew of 12, IMO.

Yes to this question. I mean, a crew of 4 manage a 747. Even if you put some torpedos on a 747, what would that take, like 2 more?
How many people are actually on a sub?

If the sub gets swept up in a mutiny and the crew splits in 2 camps, 12 guys won't really cut it for a rolling gun battle

Did you ever have to swab the deck? was deck swabbing someones whole job? like he had to swab deck every day for a year? or was it just used as punishment for making the XO's coffee wrong or getting caught burnin the wrong flick?

A topic that I guarantee every single submariner has discussed ad naseum on many a mid-watch.

Great question. I'm sure it could be done with maybe half the crew if there were more automatic controls. Navy uses a lot of manual control systems. Wouldn't be possible for twelve people to run the submarine. It takes that many just for a boomer engine room.

NUB duty. They aren't qualified for anything else. Rarely used as punishment.

Great question.  Since we all know that the water in a toilet flushes the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere (fact, science), what happens if a toilet was flushing as you cross the equator?  Does it immediate stop and start swirling in the opposite direction (my guess), or is the rule that it gets to continue the rotation based on what hemisphere it started in (stupid and boring).

Does anyone ever get on the PA and say something like "hey guys we have some leftover pizza in the armory if anybody wants some" and then there's a mad shuffle to the armory enough so that the boat starts to lean a little bit and when everyone gets there there's some mother rough rider smiling with pizza crumbs all over his face and a big JK LOL sign?

How long can you stay under without surfacing? Do you have some special machine that removes the oxygen from the water and pumps in the oxygen into the sub so you can stay under forever in case of nuclear fallout at sea level? Wouldn't that be way to much oxygen to breath? (not enough hydrogen and nitrogen?)

Yes, I realize that now, but my question is still accurate, because in my scenario, with the super machine that I referenced, it only extracted the oxygen. Someone just needs to invent a better machine, one that extracts oxygen and hydrogen from the water.
