If you want excitement, BT got it, U-571 all the way.
If you want realistic, and you won't believe this, it's Down Periscope. No joke.

Gonna have to see what 1, 5, and 10 are on your scale before committing to a concrete number here.

Working on a submarine and now having a young child have groomed me into someone who only gets/needs 4-6 hours. If I sleep 7-8 hours I am dragging ass all day.

I don't like it, but it is what it is.
How long ya been out? After eight years of standing watch, it took me a few years to get back to regular sleep of 7-8 hours. Thirteen years later... I need my sleep.

I got out in 2009, so maybe a few more years and I'll get back to 'normal'?

@Dlew- don't let me paint a picture of years and years at sea, I got out in '09 because of a jacked up shoulder (that still isn't fixed). But yes, submarine life is something that can't be understood unless you do it yourself. It's a whole different world.

IPA4Me - what was your rate? (If you don't mind me asking)
I got into better sleep habits probably 6-7 years after Navy when the youngest started sleeping through the night.

MM1 NUC. You?

can we have a submarine stories thread? do people have claustrophobic breakdowns despite knowing what they were getting into? does the whole thing creak and groan when you do a super deep dive? what constitutes a super deep dive? i want to know all this stuff

I'm sure we 'could'.

Yes.

Not really.

That's one I really can't tell you, it really is Top Secret.

 :)

Do you get to drink Coke and eat popcorn on a submarine?  Is that also Pop Secret?

Yes, and sometimes. No, that stuff isn't PS.

This thread really is about to get derailed, isn't it? What have I done?!

Here's a submarine story from my early days of BBS'n. I originally read it on Sherdog back in the mid 2000's. I couldn't find that version, but here is another one. (it came out later that Keith is a documented crazy)

I know there were a bunch of other q's before this, and IPA4Me is welcome to answer them, but this one is funny because in the past few years I've heard that they have banned smoking onboard. Smokers used to hang out back aft near the screw and burn 'em down constantly.

Eucre, hearts, and spades. Poker games on the weekends. There was often a continuous table going on Friday and Saturday. Corpsman ran the book.

I was under the impression that people only played Eucre in Steinbeck novels.  What about Canasta? Did you get down on some 'Nasta?

usually dependable spracne with a swing and a miss here

bad person of the Navy: Norfolk, Virginia, home of the fabled "DOGS AND SAILORS KEEP OFF THE GRASS!" sign. The sign is an urban legend ([1]), but cold shoulders from civilians persist in Navy towns. See also "NoFuck, Vagina."

Today they have a floating wire/antenna that can handle email. Not sure if Internet is possible. When I was there, no outside comms except family grams once a week. Mail drops were once a month or so. So we mostly had no outside communication. Sucked.

Family gram...  http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Familygram

You can find some funny family grams via Google search.

CO wasn't dick, but he wasn't buddy-buddy either. XO was cool, but not nearly as cool as the NAV(Navigator). If he liked you, when we would run while surfaced and you were lucky enough to be in the sail with him, you could burn a stogie together, his treat. One of the coolest things I ever saw was what I didn't. Up in the sail, in the middle of the night, and all around you nothing but pitch black, and the sound of the water breaking over the bow. Originated from shipyard workers in Groton, CT. No, not a staple food onboard. "They" say that submariners are the best fed sailors in the Navy, and for the first week or two of an underway (and immediately after a port call) they're right. After the fresh milk and eggs run out though? Not so much.

I don't think there was an official food. We ate well underway. It was rare that we had a bad meal. Half way night (roughly midway through patrol) was the best meal. Prime rib. King crab. Mmm. Mmm. Usually had some leftovers for the next couple of dinners too.

I know it's a total downer when you're running silent and one of the cranks in the galley drops a pan. You have to report it to the Con because it can be heard by Sonar.

What if you are in the gym pumping iron and you have to turn off "Welcome to the Jungle"?

Several patrols, my boat was smoke-free.  The captain had recently got married to a new trophy wife.  He announced over the 1mc on the way down the channel that she wanted him to quite smoking...so, therefore, the boat was quitting smoking.  I thought we might have a real mutiny.

Late in patrol we surfaced and did a swim call.  The die-hard smokers jumped into the ocean with their cigs in a zip lock bag.  Then, they tried to tread water and light up since ithey weren't "on" the boat anymore.

But, other questions.  The XO's job is to be a dick.  The CO gets to be the good guy.

All ahead flank, cavitate.
Helm, all stop.  Maneuvering, Conn, stop the shaft.
Stop the shaft, maneuvering, aye.

Guys the silent runner we have in the lab has really bad gas.  Yesterday was talking to one of the engineers and he was all:

Engineer:  Ya I was in the lab machining this part and Dan comes in and rips one.  Smelled awful.  Then he grabs the compressed air and starts spraying it all around.  He fogged me with his fart!

Emo:  Imagine being in submarine with him.

Engineer:  LOLOLOL

Not sure if classified or not but have either of you sub studs been to shuiba(sp?) port in Kuwait? I just returned from there and every once in a while we would see a periscope sticking out of the water. Made me very jealous.

Also sea related the us sank it's own battle ship to create said port for the Kuwaitis

Yes to this question. I mean, a crew of 4 manage a 747. Even if you put some torpedos on a 747, what would that take, like 2 more?
How many people are actually on a sub?

If the sub gets swept up in a mutiny and the crew splits in 2 camps, 12 guys won't really cut it for a rolling gun battle

Great question. I'm sure it could be done with maybe half the crew if there were more automatic controls. Navy uses a lot of manual control systems. Wouldn't be possible for twelve people to run the submarine. It takes that many just for a boomer engine room.

Great question.  Since we all know that the water in a toilet flushes the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere (fact, science), what happens if a toilet was flushing as you cross the equator?  Does it immediate stop and start swirling in the opposite direction (my guess), or is the rule that it gets to continue the rotation based on what hemisphere it started in (stupid and boring).

How long can you stay under without surfacing? Wouldn't that be way to much oxygen to breath? (not enough hydrogen and nitrogen?)

That depends on the mission. Sometimes, a tug boat would meet you an hour or so from port to take him home. Sometimes you just had to wait.

Family stuff is the main reason I left the Navy. I didn't want to watch my kids grow up via pictures. I travel somewhat now but I'm home the majority of the time.

Do you mean if someone dies onboard?? That's pretty damn rare.

EDIT: for that^^^ one, refer to IPA4Me's answer.

If a family member dies, it's each man's personal decision to be notified underway or not (check yes or no on pre-underway paperwork). So if someone doesn't want to know, and the Radioman get's a message about it, he has to go the whole underway looking at that guy, knowing something terrible that he can't tell him. Not kidding.

Why does it take so many people to run a submarine?  Should be possible with a crew of 12, IMO.

British boats are much more automated than ours.  Their engineering watch is something like 3 or 4 watchstanders and from their version of maneuvering, they can pretty much dial up any plant parameter and view the reading from there.  Something all the nukes dream of on a US boat.  I've been aboard England's version of the Trident and it's crazy.  They have carpeting and tiled ceilings around the ship.

However, while their stuff might be pretty slick, our boats are much more durable with less digital things to break.  If you ever go tour one of the ex-navy ship turned museum at various places around the country and can get to the engineroom, you are pretty much looking at what the modern day sub engineroom looks like.  Not that much has changed.

Does anyone ever get on the PA and say something like "hey guys we have some leftover pizza in the armory if anybody wants some" and then there's a mad shuffle to the armory enough so that the boat starts to lean a little bit and when everyone gets there there's some mother rough rider smiling with pizza crumbs all over his face and a big JK LOL sign?

Groups of guys moving around the boat can definitely affect the trim.  It's one of the things folks like to do for newly qualified Dive Officers.  One of the things that we always will do every watch is to get a perfect trim (the boat is neutrally buoyant with zero angle on the ship) at 3 knots (which is very slow).  We do this to make sure if we have to go to periscope depth in a hurry, we have a reasonably good idea of the trim so the Dive knows how much water to bring on.  This ensures the boat doesn't accidentally broach in places that aren't welcoming to a nuclear sub in their midst...

So, while newly qualified Dives are trying to do this, some of their "buddies" will go to the front end of the boat and wait.  The Dive sees the front end is heavy, so pumps water aft.  While that's going on, the guys all move aft.  Now, the boat is heavy aft and the Dive has to pump fwd.  Rinse and repeat.

These are the types of hilarious hi jinks you come up with on Day 70 of a patrol...

Rarely.  We would try and surface once a patrol once the mission was complete, but that's about it and only because the CO liked it.  We did try and go to PD at least once a watch.  While at PD, you can raise a mast and ventilate the ship if conditions support.

Who is it that locks the hatches and hits the bar? I partied with a group of sailors in Halifax. Nobody was standing watch while in port. Shutdown, grab your gear, and lock the hatch.

A term to note here is "patrol", a term that only boomer guys use. Boomers go on patrol, and fast attacks go on missions, or simply "underways".

Not a dig on one or the other, just a difference in lingo even within the submarine community.

The more you know...

A patrol is lame. You drive in quiet circles while waiting for missile launch orders.

Pretty sure they'd be alright after falling through the ice, since they're, ya know, polar bears.

Where they came from? Somewhere close by?  :dunno: they always come to investigate the giant black steel tube that appeared out of rough ridin' nowhere.

can you launch other stuff out of the torpedo tubes like they launched Spock's corpse out of the enterprise in Wrath of Khan?

In one movie didn't they launch a bunch of junk out the tubes to trick the folks depth charging them on the surface into thinking they sunk her?

Yes, that was in U-571. They launched a body in that junk as well. It COULD be done, but wouldn't happen. unless we could convince Timhawk and Kim Carnes to tour the boat...

I mean...this whole thing...

I slept through one. I was tired as hell from drills and didn't even feel it. The second one was more eventful watching the cooks chase pots and pans across the galley. Pictures from the surface make it seem much more dramatic. A much smaller fast attack might launch a lot higher.

The first episode is kinda lame, comparatively speaking, I guess. I just watched episode 2 for the first time in years and laughed my ass off. It might just be a "you had to live it to get it" thing.

Why does it take so many people to run a submarine?  Should be possible with a crew of 12, IMO.
Great question. I'm sure it could be done with maybe half the crew if there were more automatic controls. Navy uses a lot of manual control systems. Wouldn't be possible for twelve people to run the submarine. It takes that many just for a boomer engine room.

So it's like a billion dollar cast iron hull full of knob turners?

I had a good friend who was on the San Fran when that happened. No one ever asked him about it but when he'd have a few too many he would sometimes mention stuff. Crazy, crazy stuff.

If you look toward the right-most part of the damage you can see the jacked up torpedo tube(s). They're behind those long rectangular sheets of metal just below the black paint line.

I'm a little surprised they are having difficulty locating it.   It seems they should have had a position from the mayday and the destination, and within a few hundred square miles have a box.     Unless there was something catastrophic and they all died, I'd imagine they have been beating on the hull and making as much noise as possible for underwater detection.

It's not like they're scuba diving. They're in a pressurized container. I don't think they would get a serious case of the bends. It's more about being able to reach the surface and not freezing to death or drowning during the ascent.

and depending on depth, the pressure.  more than about 100 ft and you have serious physical issues

The water pressure is really the least of the problems. They train to escape from about 100m down but that is extremely shallow for the ocean. Much deeper and you're gonna have trouble getting back to the surface before you drown.

probably an air thing or two on the submarine that they could use to help with the issues of air

sharks, yes- I don’t think that there are other oceanic predators that they would deal with other than the shark

could even use the air deals to fend off the sharks however it’d be tough because you have 40 men and women who also need breathe/O2.  although if the O2 is concentrated enough it may last longer

from hatch to surface with concentrated O2 thing should take roughly 35 seconds.  multiply that by 40 and you’re at ~25 minutes give or take to account for hatch issues
