the older you get the harder it is to learn, i didn't go until i was 19 and went with a group of college buddies that already had been several times.  It was pretty humbling seeing 5 year old kids flying down the mountain.  My balance isn't that great though, so if you have skateboarded, inlined, ice skated before it might translate.

i have great balance and such for things like that.  used to be great at skating and rollerblading, but haven't done either in years. i also feel very natural going super fast.

that's why i think it looks fun.

i think i might be the counterexample.  i am/was a fairly advanced skateboarder, laughably terrible at skiing.  stands to reason that most would fare better than me though

i've never been skiiing.  i would like to try it tho, looks fun.

Liam Neeson's wife:

Quote
On 16 March 2009, Richardson sustained a head injury when she fell while taking a beginner skiing lesson at the Mont Tremblant Resort in Quebec, Canada about 80 miles (130 km) from Montreal. The injury was followed by a lucid interval, when Richardson seemed to be fine and was able to talk and act normally. Paramedics and an ambulance which initially responded to the accident were told they were not needed and left.  Refusing medical attention twice, she returned to her hotel room and about three hours later was taken to a local hospital in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts after complaining of a headache.  She was transferred from there by ambulance to Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur, Montreal, in critical condition and was admitted about seven hours after the fall.  The following day she was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where she died on 18 March at the age of 45.  An autopsy conducted by the New York City Medical Examiners Office on 19 March revealed the cause of death was an "epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head", and her death was ruled an accident.

Sonny:

Quote
Bono died on January 5, 1998, of injuries sustained when he hit a tree while skiing on the Nevada side of Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe, California.  His death came just a little less than a week after Michael Kennedy, a son of Robert F. Kennedy, died in a similar skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado. After Bono's death, Mary Bono told an interviewer from TV Guide that Sonny had been addicted to prescription drugs, mainly Vicodin and Valium. Though Mary claimed that Sonny's drug use caused the accident, the autopsy performed by the Douglas County Coroner showed no indication of any substances or alcohol.  Sonny's mother and several friends disputed Mary's account.

So much fun.  Zero risk, like times a billion reward.

I believe there is a reason you drive your car other than you just like it.  Like perhaps it serves another important purpose unrelated to going down a hill really fast.

Also, the payoff seems much greater.  I mean you jumped out of a rough ridin' plane and basically quasi-flew for awhile versus sliding down a rough ridin' hill in snow whilst standing.

O hey look, bread just breading up another great thread.

i've never been skiiing.  i would like to try it tho, looks fun.

Its very fun and I recommend it. Its also dirt cheap...like you can go on a ski trip for less than $500 not including food and booze...which is obviously an important part.

Wear a helmet and ditch if you are out of control  and you will probably survive a ski trip.

I did witness a particularly brutal collision that shook me pretty bad.

I came closer to dying in the hot tub than on the slopes though.

Yeah guyz, skiing is super dangerous.

When I was in 8th grade I was going too fast and couldn't slow down and ended up airborn and bruising the crap out of my shoulder.

You should totally never go skiing unless you have a death wish.

Back on Topic

I've never skied anywhere besides Colorado. My buddy who lives in Salt Lake City keeps talking about how awesome the snow is there and how SLC gets "better snow" than the Colorado resorts.

Is this true? What places outside of Colorado have you skied? Better worse than your standard Keystone/Breck/Abasin ski experience?

love to ski.  we used to drive but started flying and renting a car.  southwest regularly has KC-Denver for $100-150 RT if you wait for their sales.

last year did keystone two days (stayed in the village) and went to vail for a day.  vail was pretty great.

My friends did this one year and got some shitty rental car with no tread on their tires, ended up sliding all over I-70.

I don't really mind the drive and appreciate having our own vehicle out in the mountains.

it sounds like your friends are either poor or very bad drivers

Or dumbasses for not checking the tread on the tires.

I've never been to Utah, but they definitely get more snowfall there.  I've been to Steamboat and in New Mexico.  Overall, those trips were more enjoyable for me than the usual because they were a little more adventurous.

especially as an adult, if its your first time skiing or boarding (moreso) you should wear a helmet... its like $10/day extra on top of the ridiculous amounts you're already spending.
