Why do you go in January? March is much better, IMO.
Ben Ji remember last year when you drove out in the middle of a winter death storm and totally mushed its face and made it your bitch?

We normally ski at Copper (a copper card for five days is $130 or so; passwagon.com or something) and stay on the east side or back of the mountain, hardly ever any lines since the mountain is segregated with its trails. This keeps us away from the n00bs. We used to go out twice during the winter to use the days, now with a toddler, we've been going once. This year we hope to go in January alone for a long weekend and then take the little guy in March and try to get him on some skis.
love to ski. we used to drive but started flying and renting a car. southwest regularly has KC-Denver for $100-150 RT if you wait for their sales.
last year did keystone two days (stayed in the village) and went to vail for a day. vail was pretty great.

A lot of people like to "go skiing" but they don't really enjoy the actual skiing part.

:driving: :emawkid:
Drove through TWO winter death storms...the way out and the way back.
We actually left early on Wednesday last year to try and beat the storm....It worked until we got past Salina....From Russel to Colby we were driving in whiteout blizzard conditions but kept pressing on because if we got off they would close the highway. We were literally going 20mph at times following tire tracks and those reflectors on the side of the road.
Made it all the way to Burlington before we called it a night...wake up the next morning and I-70 was closed east of Colby!! :billdance: :billdance: :billdance:
My favorite part about skiing is making fun of all the skiers who aren't snowboarding.

Feb. 20th death storm? I left Wichita at 10am to head to Breck that same morning!
the older you get the harder it is to learn, i didn't go until i was 19 and went with a group of college buddies that already had been several times. It was pretty humbling seeing 5 year old kids flying down the mountain. My balance isn't that great though, so if you have skateboarded, inlined, ice skated before it might translate.

On 16 March 2009, Richardson sustained a head injury when she fell while taking a beginner skiing lesson at the Mont Tremblant Resort in Quebec, Canada about 80 miles (130 km) from Montreal. The injury was followed by a lucid interval, when Richardson seemed to be fine and was able to talk and act normally. Paramedics and an ambulance which initially responded to the accident were told they were not needed and left. Refusing medical attention twice, she returned to her hotel room and about three hours later was taken to a local hospital in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts after complaining of a headache. She was transferred from there by ambulance to Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur, Montreal, in critical condition and was admitted about seven hours after the fall. The following day she was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where she died on 18 March at the age of 45. An autopsy conducted by the New York City Medical Examiners Office on 19 March revealed the cause of death was an "epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head", and her death was ruled an accident.
Bono died on January 5, 1998, of injuries sustained when he hit a tree while skiing on the Nevada side of Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe, California. His death came just a little less than a week after Michael Kennedy, a son of Robert F. Kennedy, died in a similar skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado. After Bono's death, Mary Bono told an interviewer from TV Guide that Sonny had been addicted to prescription drugs, mainly Vicodin and Valium. Though Mary claimed that Sonny's drug use caused the accident, the autopsy performed by the Douglas County Coroner showed no indication of any substances or alcohol. Sonny's mother and several friends disputed Mary's account.
Doak Walker died September 27, 1998 as a result of injuries suffered previously in a skiing accident.
Alfonso died in a skiing accident in Beaver Creek Resort, Eagle County, Colorado on 30 January 1989.
i've never been skiiing. i would like to try it tho, looks fun.
Is this pussification?
. Its also dirt cheap...like you can go on a ski trip for less than $500 not including food and booze...which is obviously an important part.
there is also the possibility of destroying your knees even if you wear a helmet
love to ski. we used to drive but started flying and renting a car. southwest regularly has KC-Denver for $100-150 RT if you wait for their sales.

My friends did this one year and got some shitty rental car with no tread on their tires, ended up sliding all over I-70.
I don't really mind the drive and appreciate having our own vehicle out in the mountains.

I've never skied anywhere besides Colorado. My buddy who lives in Salt Lake City keeps talking about how awesome the snow is there and how SLC gets "better snow" than the Colorado resorts.
Is this true? What places outside of Colorado have you skied? Better worse than your standard Keystone/Breck/Abasin ski experience?
Renting a condo in frisco for the winter this year. :gocho: Really looking forward to getting a bit more snow to thin out these crowds though. I had a 30 minute wait in Keystone before my last run on saturday, and left by noon from breck on sunday.
What are everyones favorite binge spots in the mountains? what do you like to binge on?

I usually wear a backpack when I ski and manage to stow away around 6 beers(Pale Ales) along with extra gloves/lunch/etc. After a couple of runs(Around 10am) I start bing'n away and put the day on cruise control. Love to binge on long lifts or gondola's but the best place to binge in the mountains is a hot tub after a long day of skiing.

NAAAAAHHH! Flask, Hot Damn 100, if its good enough for cold days in the Bill its good enough for the slopes.
p.s-i usually do both, you really can get dehydrated easily with all the sweating and the dry air. Under the coat so it doesn't freeze and you aren't drinking ice cold water in an already cold environment

I agree on the hot damn, just a perfect drink in the cold weather. I did a strikeout with fireball on the gondola at keystone with some random park rats on Saturday morning. :dubious:

We used to do SLC growing up instead of CO because the little bro used to get sick from the altitude. It's much more convenient to ski in SLC compared to CO if you are flying. The snow is really nice and the places right around Park City are pretty darn nice. Solitude used to be our favorite spot.
Favorite place to ski ever was Tahoe. Skied Heavenly just a couple months after Bono died there. Saw the tree he KO'd on. Some great views and lots to do around town.
First time in steamboat last year. Pretty cool. The hot spring is pretty badass.

Or dumbasses for not checking the tread on the tires.
GFA, have you skied anywhere besides Colorado?
Oh man, are we telling skiing stories? One time when I was like 5 we were glacier skiing in the Austrian Alps. My parents just kinda let me do my thing and I'd just keep pounding the same run until they got me to go somewhere else. Well one time I came upon my mom who was slaloming back and forth and I stopped and told her she was doing it wrong, that if you just point both ski straight downhill and go into a tuck you go much faster. :Woohoo: That's how I always did it but the whole not weighing anything meant I never went that fast.
Later that night we were eating dinner in this big banquet hall thing with lots of other people, and a waiter/server guy came and put a little medal on my chest. My mom told me they had been watching me ski on the radar and I earned a medal. :gocho:

East coast skiing is much different than CO skiing/big resorts; more mom and pop places, no big resort/lounges/ect. Park and ski. I was pretty shocked when I skied CO for the first time in my early 20's, too much stuff all over, places out in CO is what makes skiing an elitist (expensive) sport. No matter cause I'm :kstategrad:
Skied-Big Tupper, Titus Mtn, Dry Hill, Turin, Whiteface all in NY; Killington, VT; Copper, Keystone, Crested Butte CO
THE BEST: Jay Peak Vermont.

I never really got this. Certainly there are some ritzy ski area's but your standard breck/keystone trip is pretty cheap if you go in a group
Lift tickets for 3 days -$275
Lodging- $162 per person last time for 4 nights(6 people in a 2 bedroom condo).
Ski Rental- $80 for 3 days
Gas from KC to CO- $75 per person.
Add $150 for food and BOOZE
That's $742 for a 4 night vacation :dunno:

So skiing as a vacation activity is more expensive than most, which is why it has the reputation that somehow confuses ben ji. context, people.

I skied at Snowbird today. I'm terrible but had fun. Not a lot of easy terrain there. Rented gear from REI this time. Cheap but nothing special. Will probably start looking for used or discount gear after this season ends.

Question for any Keystone frequenters. I just got back from the mountain Friday (went for Spring Break) and it was ridiculously packed. I realized it would be busy but I did not anticipate the legions of toddlers riding down the green/blue runs in large packs (ski schools) which made it very difficult for me to teach myself to snowboard on said runs. I was afraid of losing control and colliding with one of them which would have probably resulted in their death. I only attempted boarding for a day and a half because of this, and I would like to try again. Is there a good time in the fall/winter season that is less crowded? I imagine it'd be bad around New Years but I have a hard time picturing it worse than it was this last week. TIA!

Early in the season, pre-Christmas time is pretty quiet. May not have a lot of runs open tho. Feb is pretty quiet with the exception of Pres day weekend.
If you just want to learn and not do anything above a green, Ski Granby Ranch is usually really quiet and cheap. Not very exciting by any means but fine for very beginner things and not crowded. Could do a couple days there and then hit Winter Park about 30 minutes away.

O hay guize, asava here. Yeah, I ski a eff ton and am super good at it.
Do people even ski the main resorts these days? I haven't been in almost 5 years, the back country skiing(accessed by using a helicopter I charter or the creepy snow mobile van) is the only thing worth it.
In fact a bunch of my bro's from college went skiing a couple of months ago and invited me up. I really wanted to see them because they are super awesome and great guyz, but I just couldnt swallow my pride and share a slope with "Joe from Salina".
nothing like skinning up to your campsite after a long day of hucking in the fresh fresh, and enjoying a cup of coffee you roasted yourself next to a fire that is cooking the deer you shot with your bow earlier that morning.
O hay guize, asava here. Yeah, I ski a eff ton and am super good at it.

I should have been more clear, what can I rent and what do I need to buy
I haven't worn a jacket or coat since grade school, hoodie till I die... So anything I would buy would be exclusively for skiing.

Do you spend a lot of time standing in the rain?

skiing is v expensive.
It seems like such a waste of vacation to me, but w/e
skiing is v expensive.
Depends on where you go. I ski Brighton for $50 a day and kids free instead of Park City and $500 for all of us. It’s no frills and limited amenities but good skiing and they still sell beer.

That's a GREAT deal. Looking at the map, it's a decent sized ski area. I think I remember the name from a Warren Miller film long ago.
I've read South Tahoe is low rent and North Tahoe is snobby.

it absolutely is if you don't know how to ski/board, but man it's a blast if you do
