As I've watched the replay on Fox Sports a few points about the quarterback run game issues.
Defensive fronts in college football always have gap responsibilities, but there are different ways you can play technique. Many defensive fronts are "readers" meaning their goal isn't necessarily to just get penetration into their gap, but they are taught to strike the offensive lineman/blocker, read the block, and then fight against it. Other styles are just taught to penetrate their gap. Or another variation is to have the defensive front slant from the gap they usually would be responsible for to a gap adjacent, and this usually ends up with a front getting more penetration.
In any case, it looked to me like WVU's defensive strategy against our running game was to penetrate gaps much more than it was to read blocks. This worked really well against the quarterback run game we used well against Baylor which was delay/counter quarterback runs. Sams usually didn't run to the same side that Gronk lined up on, but rather he would wait, let Gronk lead block opposite and often we also pulled a backside uncovered offensive lineman for a power look. The problem against a penetrating defense is that these delay/counter/power runs take a while to develop and when defenses get penetration they are able to defeat these plays, essentially stopping Sams before he could get started.
When teams do this you have to have more quick hitting runs, and this is in part while Hubert was successful because we usually ran some sort of lead where he was coming down hill and all the offensive line has to do is seal the penetrating defensive line which allows Hubert to get to the 2nd level of the defense. Granted, a couple times WVU got penetration, but Hubert made the first guy miss and was able to pick up yardage.
There are schemes that we can use in the quarterback running game, namely quicker leads, that we will likely put in for later opponents. It just didn't look like we were quite prepared for WVU to play this style, or we thought we could block their penetrating dfront anyway and we were wrong.
Of course eventually we figured out that we could find the gaps in WVU's cover 2 secondary and we did.
