Yeah, I haven’t been since I was a kid. Too crowded and the lights are lame tbh. They could do more. I like the idea of it.

Loved this question!

https://twitter.com/mboerigter/status/1326700480576315395?s=21

Isn’t answer in the world too. It’s trash ass Town Topic!

I enjoyed his answer of the plaza lighting.  Very overrated event.  Could be something actually cool

I always thought American Royal was worse unless you knew someone (and even then it's probably worse)

Plaza lighting was a great time as a teenager, especially on a warm thanksgiving and i loved spending an afternoon at the Royal before a giant steak at the Golden Ox but i can see how folks that don't have those memories are underwhelmed

I've never been to either, but I usually go to the plaza lighting because I can walk to it and it's a good way to burn some of the calories off and have a little drink walk. Driving to it is something I would just not do

It's a neck and neck race between the plaza lights, literally every city in the country has them, crap even KC has them in different places, and barbeque. There's a couple of good Q places for sure but KC thinking they have the market cornered is lol.

Agreed.  BBQ is very bad unless you have a good corporate party and then go walk around and see other parties.  It's amazingly even worse now that it doesn't have a real home or date or atmosphere.  It's on a lifeline.

I was always a fan of a Falloon night on Thanksgiving and walking out pak'd and seeing the lights for the first time on quiet streets.  That was always cool.

KC should make that lighting much more of an event afterwards.  As is I guess it's good for families but man is it lame.  I like the idea of it too Wacky

Honestly every big event is overrated, looking at you defunct First Friday.  What's the most UNDERrated?

I like the plaza lights but agree that going down there just to see the switch flipped is silly and overrated.

My own personal selection for most over rated KC tradition is BBQ in general. Like I enjoy eating it every once in a while and its good but I get sick of everyone acting like its some holy thing. KC's obsession with BBQ is very little brothery, we are just desperate to be recognized for something so we act like cooking meat over a low fire/smoke is nirvana.

Picture this - Its a 70 degree Wednesday evening in early June. You just got handed 4 free royals tickets from work/whatever and head out for a nice relaxing evening at the K with some friends and are joined by 10,000 other well behaved people just looking to enjoy life. The Royals suck like they do most of the time but you can sit in your seat, eat some peanuts while sipping a barley pop as your boys in blue try their hardest to eek out a 4-3 win over the White Sox.

Actually Oakland's First Friday in March was the last time I went to a bar indoors

(Lots of towns have basically the same thing)

Its the most beautiful ballpark in the country (speaking strictly of the ball park not the setting around it) and I will fight you IRL if you dishonor Mr. K to my face like that.

I always really enjoyed First Fridays but that was like 10+ years ago.

The art focus was lost about 5 years ago.  It turned into just a cruising hang out scene and two summers ago a shooting killed an innocent girl.  It probably was done after that anyways but with pandemic it's over.  The city wasn't willing to give the neighborhood funds to help control the huge crowds so the neighborhood is over it.

oakland's is kinda like that (and I'm guessing someone's been shot) but if you go into the galleries it's pretty easy to get away from huge crowds and lots of the bars have fun things going on. but they also shut down streets and make it a street fair for a few blocks.

KC should start doing more stuff along the river front. Been to a couple of brew fests along there. I think they're missing out on some opportunities.
