Only sort of germane to Trump tanking the economy but I’ve posted about Donor Advised Funds before and I’m a big fan.
What’s a donor advised fund? For all I care it’s basically just an easy way to donate stock.
Why would I want to donate stock? Taxes! You get to take advantage of any capital gains for tax deduction purposes without paying any income/capital gains tax.
PLUS—If you use a robo investor like Betterment, you win twice. They can use tax loss harvesting which sells your tanking stock and then immediately buys equivalent stock, which allows you to write off the “losses” on taxes. The only reason so-called “experts” say that tax loss harvesting doesn’t rule is because you’ll ultimately have to pay more taxes on the “gains” when you liquidate, but this is a actually an advantage when you donate the stock.
Anyway, I just recently tried out a new DAV called Daffy, which is integrated with Betterment (and I guess Vanguard) and seems to really rock.
