This is just an appreciation post for Werners in downtown mission. I'd been there a couple of times to get some fresh grilled brats on Saturdays but never ate at the deli inside.
Is the deli amazing? Nah bro. Is it bougie? Absolutely not. Can you get a rueben/Any other sandwich for $6 over lunch? Yes, yes you can and its pretty good.

Also they will give you a rewards punch card type thing for a free sandwich and then punch two when you buy a single sandwich. I'm totes sold.
Im literally moving to a block south of this joint tomorrow. Its on my list. Hell yeah

My first apartment after college was on reeds just south of johnson dr about where you are living but i've been in the general area since then. Downtown mission has gotten a lot bigger/better over the last 10 years so here are my pro tips
Sully's - Wanna pound cheap light domestic lagers and play some pop a shot/ski ball/shuffle board/etc with some 20 somethings? This is your spot. Also its weirdly popular with UMKC students or at least it was a couple of years ago.
Key Hole Tavern - Do you want the ultimate dive bar experience? Congrats, here is the Key Hole. It's tiny, its cramped, it has cheap drinks and 1 bathroom for the whole joint. You should go at least once.
Sandhills Brewery - Do you want Great Vibes and a patio? Come here, beer is pretty meh but the vibes and patio make up for it.
Rock Hill Brewery - Do you want some beer that is better than sandhills but the vibes and patio are not as good? Come check out rock hill.
Primrose - Are you dating a super hot chick and want to impress her with a fancy cocktail bar? Walk her down to primrose and have a couple of drinks and she will melt in your hand.
The Bar/The Other Place/The Peanut - Do you want a generic American sports bar? I just noticed they all start with "The" and all of them are pretty interchangeable, just your generic american sports bars. All great.
Avelluto's - Feigning for some Great NY Style pizza and other grub? It used to be a downtown mission institution called Italian Delight (where the other place is now) but closed during Covid and a family member just reopened it about a year ago.
Sushi Karma - How do you feel about techno sushi? I'd probably avoid it, mid sushi and the one time I went they were blasting techno dance music.
Thai Orchid - Want some Thai Food? Look elsewhere, its decent Thai but not as good as lemongrass in downtown OP or Thai Place on 87th.
Campesino - Want the best Mexican food this side of Taco Via? Luckily Campesino is in downtown mission...Good Mexican spot that I loved at first but now just really like. IIRC back in the day this spot used to be a K-State bar called Lucky's(?) with a basement. I think I watched a ESPN+ or PPV early season CK7 game there once.
Los Galitos - Would you like some salsa that taste's like tomato sauce? This is your place! Garbage, it's no salsa grill and is tarnishing that spot.
Kinzi - I've only eaten here twice and its always been weirdly empty but the food it good.
Sylvester Powell Community Center - Looking to get jacked? I haven't been here in a long time but when it first opened it had a nice gym and was super cheap, probably walking distance from where you are if you want a gym.
Grocery Stores - The Hy-Vee is right there off martaway and kind of expensive but they currently have a good garden center in the parking lot. I'd hit up the Aldi in Roeland Park for the basics and don't sleep on the Price Chopper in RP. I call it the Mexican Price Chopper because they cater to the KCK crowd across I-35 and have all sorts of pre-made fajita meat/lengua/salsa/etc that is very good and you would never find at a regular grocery store.
Downtown Mission is going to be about 20x better than Independence
