devere is lying or being lied to. this chick is not the lovesick puppy she is being portrayed as. they don't just throw out fellowships to any idiot who wants to go to cairo. she's a serious student, or she'd have been laughed out of the application process.

the stuff about having to wear headscarves is also false. takes about 2 minutes on the auc website to see that.

I lean this way but not strong enough to officially recommend it since I don't know her. I mean, I would go if I were her. And I would also probably lie to my parents if that was the only way to get off-campus housing and bang my Egyptian lover on the regs.

It honestly sounds like a great opportunity.

Why does the dichotomy necessarily stop where you say it does? I think there is plenty of evidence (assuming we have reasonably accurate info) to deduce that she is a very smart and ambitious student, while simultaneously naive and stupid about geopolitics and love.

I think she's a super smart lady that wanted to go to Egypt, and while there visiting on her trip earlier, had the express intentions of finding some D for when she gets right off of the plane. Someone she can beguile into watching out for her and keeping her abreast of the issues of the day. I think she is probably a modern woman, a player, that is on her own personal crusade to wrench back some equality by flipping the script on men while she is abroad.

She's going to break many hearts, get an awesome education, and have plenty of stories to tell about her time in Egypt. She's going to make a great partner for someone later in life and wow people with her stories of love and lust, coups and conquest.

there is nothing beyond what devere has been feeding you; on those points that can be easily investigated via the internet, he's been factually incorrect on two of two. why would you assume any of the rest of his story is accurate?

Yeah it is all 3rd degree hearsay so I'm just trying to go with the information we do have and stick with that construction of reality. More than a couple alternative versions out there I'm guessing.
