She is a really academically smart kid. The fellowship became available in late spring after they normally award all the monies, probably because someone else's parents made their kid stay here in the states instead of going to such a volatile country.

She's naive about matters of the heart. She will confidently lecture you about how you just don't understand the power of love to overcome obstacles, or the reality of how today's relationships work (skype). Hopefully she'll break up with the kid in November once they work off some hormones and the future mother-in-law treats her like crap, then she can get a great education. At this point, we just wish she had another go-to person for support besides the fiance. If there's a giant upheaval and she can't rely on the fiance to help her evacuate or whatever, then there could be real trouble. Her only answer to that is "he'll always be there for me, we're in love. Besides, the university will tell us all how to be safe." She has agreed to let her father accompany her over there and oversee the housing selection. He's quietly contacting the U housing people to find out the actual head scarf rule in dorms. Meh. Maybe not all hope is lost.

But . . . concentric circles.  :flush:

that all sounds fine.  doesn't really sound that naive either.  :dunno:

This sounds better, but his family could be an issue, and she does seem to make some sweeping generalizations that love can overcome strong religious and political forces that could cause issues.

Hey, as long as she's safe, live and learn.

DeVere sounds like a pretty great, chill grandparent. Honestly, so long as she stays out of the areas where they're holding protests and the routes of the marches (and that's easily accessible open source info), she's not really in any danger, IMO.

As for evac, I think she can contact the embassy for a recommendation on a fixer. But worst case, the embassy also helps all Americans get out in bad situations.

And she's not entirely isolated besides the boyfriend. goEMAW nation has a representative there in a pinch.

Oh, and on housing, feel free to run proposed neighborhoods past me. I'm not entirely ITK on the whole city, but I know good spots and bad spots. If I was her, I'd live in Zamalek. Garden City/Talaat Harb is really cool but also more protesty.

A few select gE'rs can confirm I'm the expert on this subject.  I'm telling you, don't let her go.  You'll have to trust me (the most ethical poster on this board).

I can 100% confirm what Trim is saying.

Once she marries him, which it sounds like she probably will before she comes back (after all, you family members just don't understand that she's "in love,"  :jerk: right?), she's mumped.  Chattel.

Quote from: AFP

Vice President of the Freedom and Justice Party Essam al-Erian on Monday called on Egyptians to besiege the US Embassy in a session of the dissolved Shura Council held at a hall near to the Rabaa al-Adaweya Mosque.

He called for besieging the embassy to push its staff to leave the country.

"We hope the diplomats will not be exposed to any harm, but we want them out of the country. We do not want them on our land," said Erian, adding that the American role in what he called "the military coup" in Egypt is clear.

FJP is the MB's political party. Mrs Rex confirms its not a good situation there right now.

DeVere, for housing purposes, this is trendy Garden City right now:

I'm guessing embassy employees don't park their motorbikes on the street. So some guy running into the bagel shop gets his bike torched? or some guy rode his own bike to the protest and then torched it to make a point?

So, our puppet not only has been removed by the military, but they did so while we had our hand fully on the controls and were still trying to make his mouth move when he was grabbed off our hand?

Seems like this is a pretty big eff up if that is the case.   :dunno:

I mean, Egypt was fully in hand like 2 yrs ago, and now they are working on forcing us out completely.

This is like a sitcom with one of those dads that can barely tie his own shoes and he is trying to make dinner or something and catches the towel on fire and next thing you know they cut to him sitting on the curb explaining to his wife why the firemen are in the house.

Edit: not meant to sound mean to any individual, but to our govt as a whole in how this was handled.

That's what you get when you don't keep the manifold clean and smoke when you drive.
