Is running Egypt like playing Tropico 4? Because if so I need to be installed as dictator for life, like, tomorrow.

Boabs sound like much more than I thought they were.

I mean, armed check points?  I hope you tip him really well.

This deserves a longer post, but there is not a Western equivalent of a boab. They are "Nate Dogg and Warren G" regulators. And yes, I pay mine very well (they think I'm a travel writer from South America so they give me all kinds of great local info).

as long as you knew you wouldn't get murdered or kidnapped or something, I'll bet Cairo is lots of fun.

Is anything fun if you remove that element? Really? When me and Mrs Rex accidentally drove into the massive protest at the Sadat monument, it was awesome. We faked our way through checkpoints and high fived all the way to the movie theater. Then we drove through it again on the way home just to keep ourselves sharp.

You can't buy that entertainment back home.

Who pays the boabs? Is it all tips or do they just supliment their income that way? Do they strong arm you and make you pay for protection like old timey mafia dudes? Do rich people have their own private boabs or are those different types of security? Are boabs just for security or do they provide some concierge type of services? Do you think a boab service would be profitable in the US?

The boabs come with the building. Their fee is part of your rent, more or less. In addition to just being a watch dog, they also wash your car, carry your groceries, and pretty much any other task (when our car got here, one of them rode with us to an auto parts store to negotiate tire prices).

There's an MB official in my building, so we also have armed guards. But when things get bad, the boabs lock crap down on their block. And they know every face and every vehicle that belongs. A strange face or a even a bus that comes at an odd time are a no go. And by "armed," I mean maybe a few small handguns but mostly clubs, knives, etc.

Doubt it would work in the US. Prolly too expensive. There's probably something similar out there already.

Ha. We're not undercover. I just don't like announcing to everyone what I do and where I work. Boabs are super gossipy.

I'm a diplomat, pure and simple. 100% on the soft power train. #teammead

Think of me like a pillow that's always cool side up but may also smother you in your sleep.

If I can figure out how to do it super sneaky, I'm gonna get a video of the Tahrir subway stop one afternoon. It's unsettling.

I may move to Jordan next. Kinda hope not. Sounds super boring. Would love Lebanon, but that's a non-starter. We're contemplating Latin America. Probably Brazil. Regardless, it won't be for 2-3 more years. Maybe Syria will be back in play.

You're the best, Felix.  The sexual assault on women at protests was portrayed as a daily activity in Egypt last night on the evening news and neither the government nor the police will do anything about it.  Is that really the case?

Yes. There's a vigilante movement already organized (with some assistance from Anonymous' chapter in Egypt btw). Check out @tahrirbodyguard on twitter.

FR, I just read an article about how a Russian photog climbed the Great Pyramid unnoticed, took a bunch of pics, then climbed back down and GTFO without any finding out until he released the pics.

I am just saying, you have some pretty stiff competition on this whole Egypt sneeky pic thing.

If there was even a post, I may consider it. But I lived in Santiago before. Brazil sound more fun. Venezuela would be great, but...there's other issues at play  nothing interesting. Just not something I can really talk about (administrative stuff).

Colombia sounds fun, but then you realize you aren't allowed to go anywhere. I'd pick Bolivia or Peru well before Colombia. IMO Bolivia is a flashpoint no ones talking about (because its Bolivia). But, with both places, I'm super fascinated by indigenous angst.
