Piecing it all together with my elite Egyptian contacts and it seems like our embassy put a request in for some new monitors and a laser printer a while ago.  Now some time has gone by and FR's dot matrix printer just shot craps and guess what?  DC ignored the new printer request and now our embassy doesn't have a printer.

Also, Egyptian police were super unhelpful (shocker). Said it was just an "altercation". Then embassy security pulled out the video footage. Boom. Kebabed.

My wife and already routinely spoke Spanish when we were in questionable neighborhoods. Now, it's all we speak outside the house. And we include the annoying fake accent (full disclosure: hers is solid; mine is borderline offensive depending what border you're standing on).

I don't know what public face they'll give this, but local security is on edge. Tighter than I've ever seen them. And frankly, we are too.
