Is this good news? Or will it just piss off folks? I guess it's good Egypt got them and not the US.

I mean, it's good that they caught them. And yeah, it's no coincidence that local governments are the ones doing the actual arresting.

Early reports say they're connected to a cell busted in the Nasr City neighborhood of Cairo a month or so ago and that both groups intended to establish a permanent AQ branch in Egypt. So, that's bad.

Oh, and the third suspect has not been detained, but rather has been asked "to stay at home". #cairojustice

Is that a pretty serious thing?  Or just a slap?

Is that a pretty serious thing?  Or just a slap?

They've had a Coptic teacher in prison for a couple weeks now because some students claimed she insulted Islam.

Oh, and Egyptian officials have privately told us that the target was the US embassy (per the NYT).

Egypt sounds scary AF

Other than the street stabbings, attempted terrorist attacks, and occasional embassy storming, it's really pretty great.

I mean, I'm taking a speed boat taxi on the Nile to work (at least until the regional security office finds out and bans using them).

No. They are pretty clear and pretty adamant about that.

shipping a car is probably the worst idea in this entire move of bad ideas.  I will rank the all the ideas worst to least worst once this thread gets cooking.

I'd rank it best.  You want a car you are familiar with over there.  Aggressive driving is the only way to earn respect short of killing some one with a scimitar.

BTW, score one for ol LSOC here. No car would have been terrible. Also score one for whoever said not to get a big SUV (Eurocat?). Maneuvering adorable little colonial streets would suck and parking would be almost impossible (the tunnel to get to the parking garage at the Citystars mall would be completely impassable).

If your are going to be there a while, I would invest in a slingbox and a dedicated Directv DVR at a friend or family members house
That sounds like solid advice.

This was solid advice (together with the boxee) for football season. Otherwise, I just use hulu, netflix, and espn3 (which made the VPN an absolute pri-zero must-have for any expat).

Two more years with an option to extend for another.

Welp, turns out it was both the French and U.S. embassies:

Quote
"The investigations revealed that the suspects were intending to carry out terrorist bomb operations inside Egypt via suicide operations, penetrating the security cordon in front of the American and French embassies with a car bomb," MENA said, citing a source in the state security prosecutor's office.

MENA said the suspects had escaped from prison during the uprising that swept Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011.

FWIW, there's no way even a car bomb could penetrate the walls at the U.S. embassy. It's a goddamn fortress. It would basically just blow a hole in the wall itself and kill some Egyptian security guards and bystanders (unless they timed it for when all the shuttles are leaving; that's the scenario that really scares me but it would be tough to pull off with the randomized schedules). Even if they used the Taliban tactic of following up the bombing with gunmen, they wouldn't find more than 4-5 people in the courtyard (and again, mostly Egyptians). The buildings inside the perimeter are also all independently secured. Their remote controlled airplane idea was probably better, but would still likely be more of a shock value than high casualty rate.

No idea on the French embassy.

I think this is my favorite part:

Quote
From the checkpoint, Mr. Nabih, 26, called his Egyptian counterpart and told him which of the scores of tunnels the Hamas official had cleared for the food delivery. He first waited near the shaft of the tunnel, but after a while he was lowered on a lift about 30 feet underground and walked halfway down the 650-foot path to meet two Egyptian boys who were pushing the boxes and buckets of food, wrapped in plastic, on a cart.

Mr. Nabih gave the boys about $16.50, and argued with them for a few minutes over a tip.

It's hilarious how popular KFC is here. And since everything delivers in Cairo, you constantly see the KFC motorcycles winding through traffic. I always like when I see one at like 8 am.

Also, Hardee's. Very big here, apparently.
It's the Halal chicken thing. They're hugely popular everywhere in the middle east.

Also, if you want to be hilariously inundated in American brands go to the citystars mall. I stayed at the Intercontinental attached to it and it's hilarious....like a parody of American suburban mall culture.

Bad news, Eurocat. The revolution has officially come to Citystars. Workers at Spinneys (the chain grocery store) went bananas when they heard a report that the store was sold to a MB official. They rampaged through the store and the mall, busting glass in storefront windows, fighting security guards and injuring people until forcing the evacuation of all six glorious stories and 270,000 square feet.
