Do you have to wait a few weeks before you get to start making a new Felix Jr?  Seems like that would be a nice distraction from all this violence.

What? This thread has a human side, a gastrointestinal side, and a violent muslim side.

I thought the human side had been neglected lately.

With all this crap has gone down, I'm surprised that CanConfirm hasn't posted any new photos.  Is he OK?

As a general rule, you can only get good booze from the commissary/exchange. Egypt has weird rules on imports. So aside from Sakara and Stella (the two Egyptian beers), you can also usually find Heineken, but it's bottled in Egypt. So, like all Western things done in Egypt, it's kind of half-assed and not quite right. The Drinkies only sell Auld Stag whiskey, an appalling Egyptian blend that will suck all the moisture out of your eyeballs by morning and tastes/smells like varnish. You can get Johnnie Walker at a few bars/hotels in Zamalek and some of the nicer restaurants serve beer (Sakara and Stella), but that's about it.

Fortunately, the exchange has bulk quantities and lower-than-average prices of nearly every kind of booze (and a passable selection of beer). The Marine House also features a bar complete with a spectacularly redneck bartender.

Anything new going on over there today?  Also, is there anything cool to see out of your window?  If so you need to hook us up with a streaming webcam.

Can't see anything from our place. Just got back from a late brunch (if that's semantically feasible), but as of 11 am or so the area around the embassy and square was pretty much cleaned out. The police made an early morning sweep. But, with one protester dying (albeit from undetermined gunfire) things could very well pick back up once it cools down this evening. Which is kind of a mixed bag. On the downside, renewed protesting (maybe smaller but more violent than before). On the upside, a return to the natural order of things with them protesting against their own gov.

Also, a brief summary of my memo to copt leaders:

STFU. A counter protest would not help things here and would probably just lead things to your neighborhood. Good luck getting Egyptian police to help out on that.

Here is a surprisingly good article on the ahlawy and white knight ultras. I'll try and grab some white knight graffiti the next time Im in Zamalek.

Also, I'm adding "beef bacon" to the review list.

Tech question: What's the best way to stream slingbox to my TV? Don't want to keep using my Mac. Would prefer a devoted device of some sort. Also a remote control (am currently using mobile mouse to control laptop via iPhone; kind of a pain).

Best answer will receive something odd from Cairo sometime in the future (when the APO flights resume).

I'm really interested to hear this.

I'm guessing it kind of tastes like beef jerky.  Please let me know where it falls in this ballpark.

You can have a late brunch, but I don't think one before noon qualifies. Maybe it does in egypt though, who knows.

We have been starting work around 5. But to clarify, I had brunch around around 12:30. Felt late. Also, no mimosas :(

That's close to a late brunch. If you're usually at work by five, I'd say that qualifies.

Glad we settled this heated debate amicably.

You laugh, but people in the bay area are very passionate about brunch. Nothing makes someone prouder than dealing with a ninety minute wait for some average pastries and bacon. They may stab you if you try to cross their fundamental brunch philosophies.

It's really a lot like Cairo in some respects.

Is this brunch affect worse than white midwesterners debating cuts of steak?
