Question for gE: first job in a professional setting, just there for the training and experience it will add to my resume, how long is considered appropriate to stay on before I parlay this into a better opportunity?

kinda depends on the current role (responsibility, relationship to coworkers, training or other investment in you, etc.), but really it's a free for all. Your company has no loyalty to you.

Entry level position. Was matched up with this place through a recruitment service. There will be training, but I can't imagine it will be too in-depth, sounds like the work is relatively simple. Decent pay, but non-competitive benefits, and no room to move up. If I peaced out after 8-12 months, would I invite universal scorn and disdain from this company and prospective employers?

That's what I figured, but wanted to make sure it was rooted in some sort of reality.

8-12 months should be fine almost anywhere, especially for an entry level job.

Thanks for all the help on my resume michigancat/wacky.  Despite getting a nice offer from the new company, the benefits were a challenge and I elected to leverage a nice bump and some ownership at current company.

I honestly think 6 months is fine and don't at at feel like you need to stay a full year. Just state in future interviews that you realized it wasn't the right position for you a few months after you took the job and now you know better and are looking for a better fit.

Agreed, if you can get another job, that's really all that matters. A history of 6 month stints might be a problem, but one shouldn't.

i agree with this.  (even extending to 1-2 years).  so if you do it now, it limits your ability to do the same in the future, but other than that, no worries.

So I have hesitated many times whether I should post in here or not. I don't know any of you fools, I'm probably older than half of you by about a decade, and there's no reason for anyone here to actually help me, BUT...

I'm pretty much grasping at straws right now. If anyone can SERIOUSLY help me with some resume' polishing and whatnot, I would be a very appreciative Coal Grabb'r.

If anyone has some time, and serious ability to help, please PM me. I can give more details that I don't want to go posting for anyone to see.

TIA.

I would be glad to help.  I am in management, so I see lots of resumes and letters of application.  I am no expert at anything, but I would give you whatever assistance I can.
