I feel badly for them, touting that K-State "was in shambles" just 3 years ago.   They now stare down the barrel of 22 consecutive conference losses in football, former athletic department employees in Federal Prison and an athletic department that finished millions of dollars in the red in FY 2012.

Meanwhile down the road K-State athletics operates well in the black and is putting the finishing touches on $125 million dollars in facilities projects in just 3 years.

K-State athletics only has $72 million in debt (straight from a report to the state), not $83 million in debt, there was $53 million dollars in bonds floated for Phase II, however Phase II will have a total price tag of nearly $87 million dollars (expansion of Phase II was approved by the Board of Regents earlier this year).   Which means that K-State athletics will be paying about $35 million dollars straight out of pocket for Phase II, and that number may actually be a little bit higher since K-State refinanced a small amount of bonds from a previous debt offering in the Phase II master plan debt offering.

Jayhox's meltdown and utter inability to understand how this all works has been absolutely entertaining.   The little guy doesn't meltdown as much anymore, but when he does it makes for fantastic reading.

he's pretty great.

Quote
KU:  Contact several key big-dollar donors and sets the basis for most of their fundraising then aquires the remainder through smart investment debt decisions.

K-State:  Begs and pleads for every single graduate to send in $5-$15 dollars to hopefully set the basis for what they hope to build, then scale it back due to lack of major funding, then leverage the rest on debt.  Been done many times in Mancrappen.  (See, Bramlage and the east football stadium projects.)

KU will do this first class like all of our other major projects in the last decade.  Zenger isn't doing this in public like K-State does because KU doesn't have to.  K-State has to, otherwise they won't be able to raise the base funds for these projects on major donor money alone.  That is why K-State's projects take so long to develop -- because K-State has to squeeze every penny out of every grad with a pulse and a debit card just to be in the game.

It isn't like the basketball facilities and new press box in Manhattan were thought up last year and BOOM K-State has the funds to do them.  It has been in the works for years and years trying to stay up with the rest of the league but without sufficient funds to do so in a timely manner.  Heck, the basketball facility was up in purgatory for years and that is a relatively minor project.  Meanwhile, KU has done everything except the football stadium upgrades itself.  And thank goodness for that, because when we do, we will have seen what K-State did and make it look like amature hour.  Because we can.

That was a gem, much like Beems, hoax forgets that KU has been talking about the "Olympic Village" for years, they've been talking about removing the track from Memorial for years,  AFH stood for 5 decades before it received any substantial renovation, hell Bob Fredrick went and conned the state into forking over $2 million dollars in the 90's to bring AFH up to fire code.    KU floated millions in debt to try and keep memorial stadium from crumbling to the ground in the late 90's and borrowed money in the form of bonds and loans to build the Anderson Football Center and renovate AFH when Perkins was there.   Hell, I read the minutes from the meeting when Perkins requested state backing to float the bonds.

The poor little guy simply doesn't have a clue.

Huggins asked for it.

Mason asked for a football complex back in the 90's and Mangino asked for one practically the first day on the job, 6 years later it opened.

They totally didn't finish that by choice.  They knew that they could do better, so they just stopped talking about it and pretended that it didn't ever happen.

they were waiting to see what k-state would do first, so they could do it bigger and better.  all it'll take is a couple phone calls and they'll have memorial better than bsfs within a few months.

What's classic is the little guy clearly doesn't understand that K-State has to play by the same requirements as ku athletics.    State backed bonds are signed off by the Regents, and the Kansas Development Finance Authority.    There was no way they were going to sign off on Phase II at K-State without millions in lead gift commitments and a very structured plan of repayment.   By KDFA requirements K-State athletics must maintain millions in bond reserve funds.

Board of Regents

KSU Capital Projects (Since the Master Plan involves both the stadium and Bramlage the KBOR includes Bramlage in the project title, but Phase 2 was all WSC/BSFS):

Bramlage Coliseum/Snyder Stadium Improvem'ts - Ph. 2 86,965,000 86,965,000

Total Debt issued for WSC/Phase II:  $53.675 million.    Difference of $33.29 million between the total projected cost of Phase II and debt issued for Phase II.
