Why are construction crews in Manhattan so f'n slow? I worked on a site in KCK where they built a 7 story hospital building in under a year yet it takes us a year just to build a parking garage???

Have these guys ever built anything before or are the Townies just try to sabotage the school?

Is K-State trying to do things on the cheap?  I don't think we're cutting corners on the actual facility itself, but maybe we're trying to save money by reducing the size of the construction crews?  It'll take a little longer to get built, but when it's done it will be as nice as a facility that was built in half the time...?

Labor hours are labor hours.  2 guys at 8 hrs is the same thing as 1 guy at 16 hrs.

here is a serious answer.

the company i work for (general contractor) has done lots of work with the 4 area universities (ku, ksu, washburn, emporia state), as well as many high schools/hospitals/office buildings, etc.  ksu is by far the hardest "company" to work for.  they are completely inefficient as far as their construction relationships, and it usually takes 17 people to decide what they want to do when problems arise, normal clients have 1 construction rep and perhaps a facilities guy and company president above the rep.  the progress meetings are brutal because of this.  even small projects can take 3-4 hours in progress meetings, when a normal project would be an hour or so.

all the projects i've been involved in at ksu also had to have all materials be made in the usa, unless absolutely unavailable in the usa.  this can cause some serious delays in timelines because sometimes finding the crap can be hard.  took a drywall contractor a week to have screws for metal studs arrive, when any supply store is full of stuff made in china.

not specificly ksu related, but the manhattan city inspectors are easily the most anal in the NW kansas area as well, which again leads to a lot of delays.

now you know why construction at ksu takes twice as long as anywhere else.

Assuming you have 3 equal workers, 2 guys are more efficient than 1 and will get more done in 8 hours even if you're considering the 1 guys is working over 2 days -- division of labor and what not.

The hospital building was at KU med center so I understand the inefficiencies that Universities bring. It's annoying and would cost the taxpayer a lot less if we just let them build it like everything else.
 :dubious:

So we currently have these things under construction:

Jardine
Rec
BTF
BSFS
NBAF

All of them clusterf's on the construction side. Jardine evokes WTF emotions walking through it and I don't even know what they are trying to do.

There are a lot of coordination challenges between BPF, Jardine, and Rec complex.  A lot of drains, utilities, etc have to be coordinated together.  This has been a big challenge.  K-State also has it's own architect that attends every construction meeting for the projects going on.  So you have architect vs architect in all these meetings.

Any change order over a certain dollar amount has to be approved by the state.  That process usually takes a month.

Also heard KSU has "Born in the U.S.A." playing on loop at all said construction sites. Which if you disagree with it being made or born in the U.S. then you can get your terrorist lovin' ass out!

Its a $102 million dollar project and people still have to live there, otherwise K-State would have had a huge housing problem on campus.

That's disheartening. I'm in favor of buying all foreign-made materials and hiring a crew made up of nothing but illegal immigrants. Those guys would have already finished this press box.

current list of jobs goEMAW would do pro bono and be far superior at than whoever we have doing them at KState:

-Construction Rep
-Guy Who Chooses Basketball Coach
-Compliance Guy
-Guy Who Negotiates Contract With Coaches
-Actually, all AD functions outside of fundraising from old people
-Guy Who Runs KState Twitter Feed
-Head Basketball Coach
-Guy In Charge Of Poster/Billboard Design
-Tons Of Other Stuff

Famous Dave's was so over played when we got it. That's when I started feeling like a townie instead of a student. "OMG! Have you tried famous dave's in town? It's like the best thing ever!" No it's not you stupid townies. It's a chain restaurant that's all over the country. Get the eff out of Manhattan every once and awhile.
