Why are construction crews in Manhattan so f'n slow? I worked on a site in KCK where they built a 7 story hospital building in under a year yet it takes us a year just to build a parking garage???
Have these guys ever built anything before or are the Townies just try to sabotage the school?
here is a serious answer.
the company i work for (general contractor) has done lots of work with the 4 area universities (ku, ksu, washburn, emporia state), as well as many high schools/hospitals/office buildings, etc. ksu is by far the hardest "company" to work for. they are completely inefficient as far as their construction relationships, and it usually takes 17 people to decide what they want to do when problems arise, normal clients have 1 construction rep and perhaps a facilities guy and company president above the rep. the progress meetings are brutal because of this. even small projects can take 3-4 hours in progress meetings, when a normal project would be an hour or so.
all the projects i've been involved in at ksu also had to have all materials be made in the usa, unless absolutely unavailable in the usa. this can cause some serious delays in timelines because sometimes finding the crap can be hard. took a drywall contractor a week to have screws for metal studs arrive, when any supply store is full of stuff made in china.
not specificly ksu related, but the manhattan city inspectors are easily the most anal in the NW kansas area as well, which again leads to a lot of delays.
now you know why construction at ksu takes twice as long as anywhere else.
