Kansas State Basketball / Re: Scott Drew.

I forgot about how he continually found JUCO guard studs (he had Lecomte after those other guys), then switched to building 1/3 of his team with big time transfers. Also switched from crazy long guys in a zone and played ridiculous man to man defense. Drew is a stud.

Baylor had 3 AP poll appearances before Drew became the HC. Crazy.

Another great Cat gone too soon. This was shared on KSO by his father and I thought you all should be aware. I never met pvegs in person, but I always enjoyed interacting here and at KSO.

Quote
This is Phil Vega, dad of Paul Vega who was known by fellow Foundation posters as pvegs. He unexpectedly died early Wednesday morning March 24 at his home in Seattle. Paul was born in Kansas, but due to my job we moved when he was just 7. But he became a huge Wildcats fan. Prompted by me, KSU Class of 1975. And also his godfather who would send us VHS tapes of the games and annual basketball and football media guides.
Paul was lucky to begin being cognizant of sports at the start of HCBS‘s remarkable rebuild of the football program. This resulted in him being the only kid in his Arizona classrooms to be wearing a Michael Bishop jersey or other Wildcats gear.
The Cats played in several bowls while we were in Arizona. The most fun we attended was the 1997 Fiesta Bowl when we put it to Syracuse.
He was on this board daily, we would talk frequently about what you all were saying. And I know he direct messaged many of you to discuss all the fine points of Wildcats sports. Most every basketball and football game he and I would text sharing our disappointments and our thrills at various Wildcats plays.
Wherever he lived he brought EMAW fandom to every one he met. It’s something nearly everyone he worked with has mentioned to us in Seattle as we prepare for his services.
To close I want to say this board, this circle of fans, stretches across the nation. We are all bound together by our love of sports and the Wildcats. Those are ties that won’t be broken, no matter the success produced on the courts or football fields.

We improved with A Gordon in the lineup late in the year, too, so I wouldn't attribute our improved play strictly to a four-guard lineup. We may have taken advantage of offensive match ups against Baylor, but they hurt us on the offensive boards. It's nice to hav e a true forward option. A Gordon was hitting the boards before his sudden and unexplained absence. Is he and Murphy both gone?
Also, does Oscar get to gulag A Gordon with no explanation? If this is another pot related thing, Oscar needs to get with the 21st century. If Antonio was doing things that put the team at risk during covid, yeah I get the banishment.

Good points. Not sure on the specifics with Gordon and his likely departure. My big picture point is that we maintained good defense and rebounding in the 4 games he missed out of the last 5. Vital did hurt us, but we still were better on OR% in the game than Baylor which is somewhat impressive given their Oboarding rate for the season.

Assuming oscar (or Brad ) doesn’t oscar anyone important in the off-season, what are the biggest 1 or 2 glaring roster needs heading into 2021-22? This includes both recruits and transfers.

Our biggest need is more roster spots so we can get an actual point guard and move pack off the ball.

If Antonio Gordon is actually gone  :crossfingers: do we have anyone worth a crap we could replace him with?

He's the best 4 we have and before he got hurt or whatever is gong on, he played his role, d and rebounding, nearly perfectly. He just needs to chill out on the 3s arcs he started doing that.

Agree on Antonio, but I think he's gone. Hopefully Murphy can be healthy for a season.

Absolutely agree that we need a valid point/combo that can handle playing on the ball to move Pack off for the majority of the game.

I’m not a NBA analyst at all, but I just feel like his finesse would be valuable as a big in the league. Sneed was on draft board after the Kentucky game, you don’t think this guy will get some hits? @MakeItRain

Sneed got some looks because of the possibility of being an athletic 3 and D guy. We knew that he was a streaky shooter at best, if he declared after his sophomore year, he would have come back.

I don't think any of these guys are NBA players and that's okay. Like I said early in the year, if they stay together they'll probably be better than Brown, Stokes, & Wade. Could you imagine these freshmen next year if they had an NBA small forward playing with them like those other guys did?

A starting 5 of Pack, Miguel, Westicles, Lewis, and Bradford...sick.

Lewis, as in Seryee?

Yeah because oscar insists on playing a 4 and I don't know who else is gonna play there if Antonio is gone. I know he played 4 guards in the tournament but I don't think he sees that as a long term solution. I think his insistence on playing a power forward cost us a couple of games.

As far as Seryee goes though, I do like him a lot and I think the off season will be great for him.

I'm hopeful that the smaller line up and the success we had with it (especially on defense) convinces oscar it is a viable line up, especially in a league that mostly plays 4 guards/wings anyway. Plus, oscar has had decent teams with guys like Shane and Nino at the 4 while at K-State. I also think Murphy will be back and hopefully he can get healthy and play a full season. Regardless, playing small some and with a more traditional 4 some based on who the opponent has in the game would be wise. I mean, we absolutely abused Vital multiple times in the first half because he couldn't guard Dajuan or Selton on oops or drives. Lewis is an intriguing prospect and probably a guy willing to play a smaller role too. A regular offseason will be great for a lot of our guys.

Yes, all three of those schools went winless, but only TCU and Flood Aggie went 0-18. The Big 12 played 16 conference games before 2012. A&M is the only school with two 15+ game Big 12 losing streaks.

aTm went 0-16 with 2 future NBA players (Acie Law and Antoine Wright) on their roster. That's tough to beat.

I think Miguel could be a lynchpin for this team as they develop.  He has shown some toughness that oscar teams need to be successful.  In a couple of the games where we were getting embarrassed, he got more aggressive and was willing to put his shoulder into a defender and drive.

I have no problem with the talent on the team.  I have a problem with the talent being limited to two out of the four classes for 6 years in a row and not getting corrected.
Yeah this is the problem and reflects Oscar's lack of overall program management skills. The big concern should be that if he was that inept or indifferent about recruiting at a level that could sustain a program when he knew he would deal with the consequences, how few shits is he going to give when he knows it won't be his problem when he is enjoying retirement?
Dude has landed a crap ton of 4 stars and has respectfully reeled in a ton of top 150's. Unfortunately, when they don't work out and leave, they also suck elsewhere. It's a gamble every year when you bring in new kids. You love bashing his recruiting efforts, when he's a fine recruiter. If anything, he lacks developing players. If only we had a Justin Williams to fix this team.

No wacky, he's either a terrible recruiter, a terrible evaluator, or a terrible developer of talent, or any combination thereof, and that is why we're at where we are right now. You can't be 9 seasons in and have twice the number of transfers as players he's graduated, that's abhorrent. If he gets fired it will be his fault that he has proven that he can't be consistently relied upon to identify, land, and develop players for this program.

He’s a world class talent evaluator.  Probably average developer. Way below average recruiter.

I see fault in his ability to be a GM of his program. He and his staff have been particularly bad at missing on bigs.

This list is posts that really never did anything at K-State:

Jack Karapetyan
Neville Fincher
Brandon Bolden
Malek Harris
xWhomper
James Love
Levi Stockard
Nigel Shadd
Mawdo Sallah
Austin Trice

Guards have been much better, but there have been too many pretty good ones that he couldn't make work.

Marcus Foster
Nigel Johnson
Cartier Diarra
Amaad Wainright

I think Shaun Williams and David Sloan could have been contributors too.

The combination of missing on bigs and mismanaging/losing guards that were pretty good have been the major reason for the rollercoaster.

I became pretty sure oscar is going to be back last week regardless, so now I'm just going to enjoy it and find the positives. I don't do burn it down, so I'm hopping back on the oscar train (until I'm off again).

I think you both have forgotten why we're in this place to begin with. Then realize that 2021 is likely to be another empty class.

Naw, the mess is oscar's. We'll see what happens, but I don't see the issues right now with any of these guys. I thought he'd lose this group when we absolutely sucked in January and early February, but they seem to have only bought in more as the season went along. That said, another issue could arise later this spring or this offseason and oscar could lose a key piece or two which would suck.

Also, the better play has helped, but I was gravitating back as I continued to hear more info that oscar was going to back regardless of the results this year. I can't do full burn it down anymore when it's clear that there is little chance a change is going to be made.

Pack and Bradford are so so good. Miguel and DG3 are absolute dogs.  Need like 2 more good players that don’t exist on this roster.

Between Gordon, murphy, and EZ there's a serviceable power forward in there. oscar needs to go get the best shooter available in the juco ranks, and that's probably all we need.

EZ is a good back up for Bradford. A Gordon is fine at the 4 and rebounds like crazy, but I'd like another option there. I'm not sure Monte is every healthy enough to play, but we'll see.

This team does need another combo guard that can defend. Good Mike McGuirl is okay if he comes back, but I'd prefer someone that can be a better PG.

My takeaway is that it's really, really hard to lose 14 in a row. There ar teams like Iowa State, TCU and us in this and others leagues every year. Tip of the cap to the Clones and Huskers, I guess.

After ISU plays Baylor Tuesday, they'll likely match our 13 game losing streak. I wonder how many leagues can say they had 2 teams lose 13 straight in the same season.

First, I think a change is unlikely, but we'll see. I don't think the biggest donor(s) are on board right now for whatever reason.

Second, I do like the young talent, but I do think we need another piece, specifically a combo guard that can really defend. Find a mid major transfer with experience that can bring some more dawg mentality.

Third, my biggest surprise with this year is that oscar didn't lose this team and if anything they've only come together stronger as the season progressed. In January I thought this team would fall apart.

Would AJ Bramah move the needle for next year?

I like him, but we have a logjam of 4s and 5s. IMO this team needs another tough guard. Doesn't have to be The Flush, I'd take a Larry Reid/Elliot Hatcher type.
