For context, the embassy is taking care of us. So, we’re good.

Also, for those of you newcomers who are “pre-Cairo thread,” Mrs Rex is still an absolute badass and is working phones and getting us hooked up and also volunteering to translate for other embassy families.

Also, for those of you who remember the Cairo thread, after two healthy girls, Mrs Rex is 6-months pregnant with our first son. So, that’s a pregnant wife, a 6-yr old, a 4-yr old, and a strict military quarantine that gets you a year in prison for leaving the house.

Ask me anything. I finally got everyone to sleep and now I’m stressed and bored and almost out of scotch after 9 days of lockdown.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Lebanese protests

You can google Lebanon "you stink" protests for more context. Basically, complaints about the gov not picking up trash escalated, and the result was some pretty solid signage. I remember when Egyptian protests were this playful.

Kansas State Football / year
« on: August 31, 2013, 03:43:31 PM »
the huge let down makes it feel like 2004  , but the Snyder statue and going away commemoration vibe makes it feel like 2005 (except we sold out the stadium i think so maybe not :dunno:) but then again we have an over-hyped white JUCO passing QB and a handsome black running QB BUT THEN AGAIN we also have old emoticons back so maybe it's 2010  :Out on a limb: .

The important thing is that it's definitely one of those years. But I need to know which one.  :Ughhh:  :Puppet:  :mangina:

Essentially Flyertalk / Twitter hijack AQ "jihadi" hashtag
« on: August 17, 2013, 06:11:34 AM »
The internet is so great sometimes.

Quote
An apparent al-Qaeda Twitter account asked followers for suggestions to help spread Jihadism, instead, the account was deluged with satirical advice, Britain’s The Daily Mail reported on Friday.

In one satirical response, Twitter user Mike Doran suggested that al-Qaeda's leader Ayman al-Zawahiri should “start ‘Martyrdom,’” AQ's brand of exclusive fragrances,” according to the Daily Mail.

Another user suggested: “More cats in online video releases.”

“For the record, the jihadis managed to get about 200 tweets before the 2,200 provided by 'Merica,” tweeted Berger on Friday.

If you could combine/edit emoticons on this board for a specific poster (i.e. :fatty:), what would they be.

For example:

:johndougie: = :users: + : :jeffy: (the new jeffy)

:ksubrian: = :driving::cheers:

:benja: =  :jerk: but with a shake weight

Essentially Flyertalk / Monsanto: A Great American Company
« on: March 20, 2013, 01:18:50 AM »
Is there anything more noble than feeding the hungry. I mean, imagine when Old Man Monsanto was a boy and he probably volunteered a soup kitchen or something one Thanksgiving and was like "what if did that all the time but for a living? You know, be really really ridiculously good at feeding hungry people."

I bet everyone laughed at him. But not now, Monsantito, not now.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Master "Like a Boss" Obama thread
« on: February 14, 2013, 01:55:38 AM »
Is there one already? Feel free to merge:

Quote
Inside the White House and out, advisers and associates have noted subtle but palpable changes in Mr. Obama since his re-election. "He even carries himself a little bit differently," said one confidant who, like others, asked not to be identified discussing the president. He is relaxed, more voluble and even more confident than usual, these people say, freer to drop profanities or dismiss others' ideas.

Essentially Flyertalk / 2nd worst town in Kansas
« on: December 18, 2012, 09:28:13 AM »
Obviously coffeyville is the grossest and most depressing (my best bro played there with Brendan Jacobs and they would drive to Tulsa and go to hooters 3 times a week, so Tulsa hooters > coffeyville and that was before they coated the town in oily flood waters).

So we're looking for second place nominations here. Or maybe first place for the "coffeyville trophy" and we'll just assume coffeyville itself is hanging in the rafters.

And let's think about qualifications. For instance, no coop towns that have nothing but elevators and a post office. To be really depressing and gross, there needs to be a depressing amount of sad gross people living there. Community colleges are obviously a plus, as are hotels with no discernible reason for existing (I'm looking at you, Fredonia).

Nov 17 looking very likely. I mean, just three weeks away from celebrating a Dr. Pepper? Amazing. That gives us two whole weeks of nothing but CTR BBSing until December 1st. Just amazing.

The question: Who is perceived by college coaches to be the biggest cheater in the sport?

John Calipari (Kentucky): 36 percent
Scott Drew (Baylor): 34 percent
Ben Howland (UCLA): 12 percent
Jim Calhoun (Connecticut): 7 percent
Tom Crean (Indiana): 3 percent
Dave Rice (UNLV): 3 percent
Others receiving votes: Too many to list.

Quotes that stuck:

On John Calipari: "Cal probably doesn't have to cheat now as much as he used to, but he's still the standard. The rest of us can't even deal in his league. He's the best."

On Scott Drew: "I don't even have to blink when I say the answer. He's despised by a lot of people because he comes off holier than God. Meanwhile, everyone knows he's had to cheat big-time to get the program to where it's at. If it wasn't for the God stuff he wouldn't rub people the wrong way as much."

Essentially Flyertalk / felix rex moves to Cairo
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:12:50 AM »
So I am more or less officially booked to move to Cairo at the end of May. Any expat advice from Eurocat or others will less obvious names but living abroad experience? (also, really looking forward to throwing that "expat" thing around).

I'll be living in the Zamalek neighborhood in downtown Cairo. Housing expenses are paid.

Employer is also paying to ship one crate of our crap over there, including one car. Have heard mixed reviews on whether to take a car, but we have a beat-up 2003 Matrix we're thinking of shipping over and then either driving into the ground or selling before we leave (we've alternately heard that we can sell it for more over there and also that we can buy a SUV cheaper over there).

Employer is also paying moving expenses and storage expenses for all the crap we don't take while we're gone. It's only going to be 2-3 years (although there's an option to extend or go to a different location after that), so I'm not planning on taking much more than a toothbrush and a change of clothes (Mrs Rex has a differing opinion on this).

While there, we also get free airfare to London once a year for a two-wk stay, so I will also be looking for some "travel around Europe" type things (we also get a flight back to the US once a year, but I'm pretty sure that is going to be locked up for pilgrimages back to the farm).

WATCHING THE CATS!: This appears that it will be problematic. Mrs Rex is in Kuwait right now and has confirmed that ESPN3 is a no go (although there appears to be a PPV alternative of some sort). Am I just relegated to justin.tv and other nonsense? Not sure if we can get ESPN, etc there on TV either (again, wife is at hotel with 2,000 channels right now, and ESPN is not among them).

Anyways, any basic recommendations on what to take/not take would be great. I have traveled around Asia a little and lived in Latin America for a bit, but have never been to Europe or the Middle East (again, Mrs Rex grew up in Beirut and lived in Madrid for awhile, but I have found we often have conflicting ideas on what's important/not important to take on these things).
