How long is it supposed to take to get used to a new mattress? My back rough ridin' hurts.

depends on how much you're breaking it in :fatty:

I made the switch to a high density memory foam mattress last fall. It's been the best 6 months of sleep in my life.

But was the first week the best week of sleep in your life or the worst?

It may have taken a night or two to get situated, but definitely not a full week.
-
It's been 4 nights so far...but I also got a new pillow 2 nights ago and I think it is too thick. Last night was the worst night so far. It is not getting better.

memory foam mattresses take a while to break in. seriously jump around on it like a kid in a hotel room for a while
also, they absorb your body heat and get softer over time. if you leave for a few weeks when you come back it will be brick hard again

The one we got is a hybrid...like memory foam with some springs in it....or something like that.

i think it takes your body a few weeks to ditch its preconceptions and adapt. also it is possible you just dont like this mattress.

Probably should just go with separate bedrooms. I can barely sleep due to his snoring sometimes anyway.

Did you just start this thread to bitch about Gooch's snoring? If so, well done.

Making fun of memory foam mattresses for being way too hot is a thinly veiled method to troll steve dave out of seclusion. It won't work
-
We got a Tempurpedic Cloud about three years ago. At first, my lower back started to hurt, but that's because our old mattress had zero support. Over time, it worked itself out.
Now, I love that thing. My wife is weird about it, and she says she prefers one with springs, but it's the most comfortable bed ever.
-
Same. Cloud delux. It is fantastic. Have had it for several yrs and it is amazing. I did start having some neck issues a while back and started sleeping without a pillow at all, and boom...great sleep, no neck issue. The cloud contours well enough that I don't need a pillow.
Side note: I bought my wife a new memory foam pillow about 6 months ago. The sales guy was trying to get me to upgrade to the new version of the Cloud. During which, he told me I could sell my tempurpedic on Craigs list for at least 1k-2k. I called bullshit and he said that he has customers tell him they sell mattresses that are just short of a decade old for that on there. :surprised:

What kind of weirdo is buying a used mattress on Craigslist? That is the grossest thing ever.

Especially a ten year old mattress and especially for a thousand bucks.
I mean if you need to buy a mattress from Craigslist then you are probably too poor to pay more than $50 for it.
-
How do you guys decide? I've been wanting to get a new mattress for some time. I don't think I can really make a definitive decision by laying on a floor model for a minute in a store. :dunno:

I think our Tempurpedic was about $4k when we bought it. They aren't cheap. They come with a 25 year warranty, and the only way you get that warranty is if you use some sort of special mattress cover.
It's my understanding that memory foam beds, at least Tempurpedic, are immune to a lot of things like bed bugs and stuff like that. So, as long as it's wrapped in the mattress cover, you're probably fine.
Besides, memory foam beds get really comfortable between 3-5 years. That's my experience. I mean, mine is quite possibly the most comfortable anything I've ever come across.

My point wasn't that I could buy one. It was that when you get sick of yours, sell it on craigs list and go buy the new model.
-
Also, if you're really wanting to get weird about it, if you want to check out a Sleep Number, go stay at any Radisson for a night. Every one I've ever been to has one.
I now avoid all Radisson hotels if humanly possible because I absolutely detest Sleep Number beds.

Yeah, we are not saying that YOU are the weirdo.

I will warn you we loved out memory foam mattress at first, but overtime as it's gotten softer, we wish we had more support.

The one we got has some warranty about it is not supposed to sag more than .25" or something like that and it if does then we get a new mattress....which is really going to suck if it takes 3-5 years to break in.

in my unfortunate experience with bed bugs, i don't see how what the mattress is made of would have any impact at all.
when you say 3-5...is the bed still manageable the first years? Cuz i ain't breaking in one for that long.

Would you rather sleep on a bed used by 1,000 people one time or by one person 1,000 times?

Depends on who the person was.

A young, poor Batt BcKee once accepted a free hotel mattress from a friend who worked at a Hilton. It was a big step up from my futon.
-
I got this when I moved, because it could be delivered the day I moved. Cheap enough I assumed that I would replace it pretty soon, but over a year later I still love it, and it was essentially free.

our iComfort does too. Just more support in general (firmer) is what we wish for. It was great at first, and felt right, but with the softening we regret not going firmer.

Have some dry runs where you just touch his nose in his sleep.
Or if you wanna be mean about it, cuddle him up. Wrap one arm over him and squeeze his nose til he wakes up then fall asleep in quiet.

Last night was the best night of sleep since getting the new mattress. I used a thinner pillow from the guest bed...and also Gooch was gone.

go to the store and lay on them. Buy the one that feels the best.

replaced our 7 year old $900 king from Costco last month with the $1,200 "Stearns & Foster" king Costco now has in store. The new mattress is at least 25% heavier than the old and has been great so far.
I rented the $19.99 truck from Home Depot to get it home and these people came and hauled the old one away a $20 donation - http://www.avenueoflife.org/in-kind-donations.html (http://www.avenueoflife.org/in-kind-donations.html)

I sleep incredibly hot and mrs. dave incredibly cold. so I bought this thing
https://www.chilitechnology.com/products/ooler-sleep-system
and, folks, it rules. It keeps me at the perfect temperature all night. cannot recommend enough. Before I would toss and turn a lot to adjust and now I just sleep through the entire night and I feel more rested.

I’ve looked at getting one of these. Do you hear it? Do you notice a difference laying on it? Most worried about the sound though
-
Sound is very soothing to me. Like a soft fan. You c an adjust it to be quieter but it will take it longer to cool down. We leave it at the standard setting because it has a nice white noise. Don’t feel it other than that it’s obviously cooler below me.

Oh man I might have to buy this. When that chiliBlanket ships may have to get that too!

luckily I have superior sleep genes
-
I've been looking at that system since December 'sd. I'm like lava level sleeper, but I love big huge blankets too. This seems it could be best of both worlds. I keep hearing great reviews from reputable people, the 'sd stamp of approval might put me over the top.
-
i'm kinda mumped in that i'd kinda like to buy a new mattress (and a new fridge), but i think/hope i'm gonna move in maybe 2-3 years and i don't want to move stuff like that.
-
i want to buy a new coffee machine too, but that's not too big for moving. just kinda feels wasteful to stop using the one i have.

I sleep with a floor fan about 6 inches away from me.. every time we have a massive storm in mhk coworkers will talk about waking up because of it.. not me suckers

Your mattress buying strategy and tv buying strategies line up nicely with my own.
Edit: I know that doesn’t line up with the Casper recommendo, but my personal strategy is trumped by the do-nothing-and-sleep-on-whatever-my-wife-orders-off-the-internet strategy.

this failed on me last time. The mattress never softened like we were promised :shakesfist:
-
I had the same issue. Years ago I bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress and it was very stiff. I thought that sleeping on it over time would soften it, but it stayed hard and was very hot to lay on in one position. I gave up and put it in the guess room and decided to once again shop by laying on several. The one I picked turned out to be great. It was a Beautyrest Black and on sale, so it turned out to be less than the Tempur-Pedic mattress.

I am getting an 8Sleep Pod Pro Cover cover to replace this. Not because the ooler doesn't rule because it for sure does and has changed my sleep dramatically for the better. but because mrs. dave wants one on her side to warm the bed up before cooling it off and I don't want two separate units. I'm probably going to just put the ooler in a box and pack it for travel. also the 8sleep has a bunch of sleep monitoring stuff and more advanced features. I'll review this thing in like a month. Not supposed to be here until end of Sep anyway.

Interesting. I am an idiot and bought a Casper mattress last year and sweat my ass off all night. We are prob just going to junk it and get something else, but the chill thing seems to be an option. Pricey, but a bit cheaper than a new mattress I guess.

It is fairly comfy, but yeah, its pretty hot. Its really hot with anything "abnormal" like being a bit sick or having a few drinks. I typically wake up in a pool of sweat on the weekends.

I’m telling you the Ooler 100% solved that for me

I bought a Purple because I'm #1cat. Love it. Was really pricey but absolutely worth it imo. Love that egg crate technology.

Considering, but its a bit pricey. May sweat it out for a bit and just get a new mattress that isn't like sleeping on soft lava.

You better not flake out on your promised review. This expensive, non-essential product seems right up my alley.

I'm new here and I just want to mention that, depending on the type of mattress and your individual preferences, it could take anywhere from a few nights to a few weeks to get used to it. However, if your back is still hurting after a few weeks, it might be worth checking if the mattress is right for you. You could also try adding a mattress topper or changing your sleeping position to see if that helps. And if you're ever in need of mattress recommendations or tips for better sleep, check out Sleep Underground's (https://www.sleepunderground.com/) website. They've got some great resources to help you get the best possible rest!

https://www.chilitechnology.com/products/ooler-sleep-system
and, folks, it rules. It keeps me at the perfect temperature all night. cannot recommend enough. Before I would toss and turn a lot to adjust and now I just sleep through the entire night and I feel more rested.
Not supposed to be here until end of Sep anyway.
https://www.eightsleep.com/product/pod-pro-cover/
You better not flake out on your promised review. This expensive, non-essential product seems right up my alley.
Narrator: but steve dave did indeed flake ...

I almost pulled the trigger on one of those but I keep hearing the water ones break an leak everywhere 😩. Report SD!

I still only have the Ooler which continues to rule and has not leaked. 8sleep will happen at some point.

I have purchased a number of casper mattresses off the casper site, but i recently bought two that were second-hand. Ran across this dude who handles returns and resells them at less than half price (other brands too). They clean them (allegedly) and put them in plastic wrap...they aren't visibly worn at all. Could have had dead bodies on them, or people having sex with dead bodies. Who knows, but that's part of the fun isn't it!?!

once you get past the first night it's no longer gross and you never think about it again, so it's a good savings.

Living in the Jaw for the last almost year my best 1k investment has been buying a good mattress with casper, who I also have one back at home.
Not to stan them, but in general, I don't care who you are, buying a mattress even if it's more expensive is always worth it's weight in gold. Few things in life compare to a good nights sleep, you have to do it right or else you are hurting your body, and therefore your mind, and thus the quality of your life.
-
We're probably going to get our 3rd different one in the last 5 years. 1st one was too firm. Current one is a pillowtop that has indentations where we lay. Big bump in the middle and we miss our 1st one.

Caspers are great if you like sleeping on the surface of the sun. Very comfy though.

I brought a Beautyrest Black about 5-6 years ago and I never had a better mattress.

I don't know if this is considered the Master sleep thread or not. One of my buddies just texted me and said that with his new job he has to be in the office at 7am. Has about a 30 minute commute. We are trying to find time in the week to hang out. He said he has to get his 8 hours of sleep at least or he cannot function.
I on the other hand can go with anywhere from 5-7 hours of sleep and be fine. Have I evolved? I have been like this a majority of my life.

I think some people just sleep very shitty which makes the 8 hours a requirement v. you who maybe sleeps super hard for 6 hours.
On that note I find that if I take some l-theanine and inositol near bedtime my sleep quality is noticeably better. highly recommend.

WW do you think we will die earlier than others because we sleep considerably less? :Crybaby:
-
No, we will live to 110+ easy.
While I can function on 4-5 no problem, i still prefer 6-7. This is a new thing for me since having kids.

Its old and has gotten flat. Its fine when I fluff it up a bit before sleep but I keep waking up in the middle of the night and its just flat as crap. I like a pillow that has a bit of heft to it where I basically sink about half way into it. I've tried like 4 million pillows and it takes me forever to find one I like.

Do you like smoking crack?
-
Do you like smoking crack?
My Casper mattress boils my entire body if I have a few beers before sleep so I feel that smoking crack before bed would be a bad idea.
Also, if you are insinuating that crack smokers possess the best pillows and if I had some crack, I could trade for a great pillow, tell me more. I don't know how to obtain crack, but I feel like I could prob get some crack before I could find a pillow I like.
-
There's a guy who makes my pillow, I've never tried it but have you thought about seeing if he has a pillow for you?

Oh man, I wish. Official, "downtown" type Marriotts have the best rough ridin' pillows in their upgraded rooms. There are like 4 of them on the beds and one is always perfect. I miss my old work travel days. I should book a night at the one here and steal the good pillow.

You can buy an entire Marriott bed spread. I spent a slightly embarrassing amount of money doing so to buy the highest echelon set (Platinum? Diamond?). I now have 4 of those bad boys plus a body pillow. I rest in the lap of luxury every night.

I recently switched to a Coop pillow. Big upgrade over the flat, worn out crap pillows I had. We’ll see if it lasts.

I still only have the Ooler which continues to rule and has not leaked. 8sleep will happen at some point.

UPDATE!:
My Ooler started making a weird noise. Pretty sure it's a bearing in the fan or something. Had an incredible run. BUT the good news is I outlasted 8Sleep Pod3 and now they have a Pod4 which I just ordered. Review incoming after it finally gets here in like mid June because they are back ordered AF. I didn't get the bed frame one or mattress, just the cover. I have an elitely comfortable tempur pedic that I'm not bailing on just yet.
Also I did like 10 minutes of googling and the code MEMBERS is the best one and gets you $500 off the 8sleep.

I really value my sleep, but I don't think I value my sleep 3k for a cover. I should def get this though. I'm hot 90% of the time and Mrs SF is cold 100% of the time.

I haven't really researched it enough, but is it prob smarter to get one of these thingies that go on the mattress as opposed to getting a mattress that has similar features that will need to be replaced sooner? I guess they probably have similar life cycles.
-
SD you have me down a rabbit hole here. 8 sleep almost had me until I saw the required monthly subscription. I'm a hard pass on a $2500 mattress top that also requires a $15 a month subscription. Sleep number has a topper that has decent reviews, but also reviewing the chilipad. Mrs SF is pretty adamant about whatever I get covering both sides since she thinks it would be weird having a top on just half the bed even if she uses the features or not.
Sometimes this bbs saves me monies, sometimes this bbs costs me monies. :dunno:

well it's a little deeper than that. for example, they claim they will one day be able to tell you are getting the flu, before you know you have the flu. Their pitch is they would be able to help you treat it sooner but their real money maker is selling that info to folks like insurance companies or advertisers or any number of people who could benefit from your health information. They would be able to tell if you're drinking, or had sex, or exercised that day, are gaining weight, etc. Kinda scary where people could take it.

Subscription is only required for year 1. I’ll probably keep paying it though if it’s doing all that good crap rusty talked about though.
I would for sure not hesitate to recommend the chilipad. That’s who made my Ooler and it ruled. Just not enough savings for me to get instead of the 8sleep though.

the sleep number one is a bit cheaper but I don't like the fact that its two separate covers as opposed to one for the whole bed.

We bought a new mattress about 3 months ago and we were really close to going with purple but I couldn't get over the foam. Very comfortable though. We went with a nice Sealy. Don't scrimp on the mattresses boys. One thing you should spend the 'do re mi' on for sure.

anyone use one of those inclining beds?
My lady friend has one. After she broke her neck (don't stand on the top of a ladder where it says "not a step"), she had fusion. Needs to elevate from time to time to relieve pain. Works well. I'll elevate my legs for a bit if my back hurts. I can't stay in that position since I'm a side sleeper and like to roll.
-
I'm moving and already going to buy some new furniture, so why not spend even more money and get a new bed. Should I get a good bed and get a cooling thing to put over it, OR get a super fancy bed with it built in?
-
anyone use one of those inclining beds?
My wife and I love ours. We used to have a split king so one could be up and the other down, but it definitely felt like two separate beds which was not ideal.
-
Apparently the couple next to my mom were inclined when the power went out last week and had to sleep in the guest room because you need power to lower the bed back down. Just another data point to think about.

You can - the king is 2 Twin XL sheets. I think we tried it both, with a king sheet over the whole thing as well as the two twins.

I want to know this as well. I've been thinking about getting one. I snore a bit when on my back now that i'm old balls and I think this would help, but I'm a lunatic about my pillows so i'm hesitant to try one of these. Plus some of them are huge.

sleeping in a relatively upright position seems to mostly fix my sleep apnea symptoms.

We recently got the helix midnight luxe. It's firm. But I do think I'm waking less and don't have any aches or pains when I get up. We're happy with so far.
