everyone else
-
Blake Griffin is the clear #3.
-
do you even pullen bro?
gtfo with that everyone else bullshit.
-
A lil old school, but I'd put Mike Evans and Chuckie Williams in the top 5. Evans is still the only college player, I know of, who could throw up a half court hook shot and not be riding the bench afterwards (although making the shot prolly did help).

Yes, I was at that game. :cyclist:

They didn't play in the Big XII
-
a) I was thinking big xii not big 8
b) I should have differentiated somehow "most talented" or "best one-year season" vs. best ever

1st team All Americans is a good place to start:

2005 Wayne Simien

2002 Drew Gooden
2000 Marcus Fizer
2000 Chris Mihm
1998 Paul Pierce

there you go, add pullen and whamo
-
Do you mean best career in the Big 12, or best player to come from the Big 12?
-
his career really flamed out at the end but Jamal Tinsley winning a big 12 title with the like of Paul Shirley and Jake Sullivan makes him the best pg in the big 12 era for my money
-
I never got to see old Raef LaFrentz play. Pretty good?
-
I never got to see old Raef LaFrentz play. Pretty good?
he was pretty damn athletic before his knee problems, never a great defender and physical teams could push him around a bit, those late 90s KU teams were so loaded
-
Do you mean best career in the Big 12, or best player to come from the Big 12?
I think best seasons would be more interesting. Because that is closer to the first part (the second part would probably rely more on NBA data) but doesn't discount a one-and-done. Also, it is always a bit difficult to compare players that play completely different positions.
Best Seasons Bigs
God Tier
1a. Beasley 07-08
1b. Durant 06-07
Elites
3. Griffin 08-09
Kansas Bigs + Fizer It is really incredible how interchangeable the Kansas bigs #'s are, was not expecting that.
Fizer 99-00
LaFrentz 96-97, 97-98
Gooden 01-02
Collison 02-03
Simien 04-05
-
I never got to see old Raef LaFrentz play. Pretty good?
There was one game vs Wooldridge at Bramlage, they were killing us, toward the end he was beyond the 3-point line and none of our players were within 10 feet of him. He stood there, looked around, and finally jacked up probably the only 3-point shot of his career.
Nothing but net.
He is one of my most hated Jayhawks.
-
Do you mean best career in the Big 12, or best player to come from the Big 12?
If I went back and edited my original post for clarity, I would write "best/most talented player to play in the big 12" which is different than "best career" or "best to come from big 12," but I didn't so I guess anything goes
-
Paul Pierce?
-
I think Paul Pierce's JR should be in the Elites with Blake
-
Paul Pierce?
http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?p1=paul-pierce&p2=kevin-durant&p3=michael-beasley&p4=blake-griffin&chart=possession_pct&chart2=offensive_rating_pct#chart
it's not completely fair to compare a jr season to 2 freshman and a soph but Pierce was maybe just a step below those 3

Add Hollist Price and Tony Battie and you've got a team
-
Jamal Tinsley and Kareem Rush belong on the list as well.
-
denis clemente
-
Raef was a slightly less physical version of Perry Ellis surrounded with better players.
-
Raef was a slightly less physical version of Perry Ellis surrounded with better players.
LOL, this is not accurate at all. Raef was a white.
-
He was the best damn baller named Raef, that's for sure.
Plus as other have already alluded to he was the poster child of the "KU is soft" teams.

Darrell Arthur actually isn't a bad comparo - both were above average athletes and shooters for their size that were great finishers on stacked teams

Raef was before my time. I didn't start caring about KU hoops until I matriculated to KU. I do know that Raef is about a foot taller than Perry, though. I think Sasha Kaun is the right comparison, here.

or Cole Aldrich
-
Latter day Cherokee Parks.
-
My All-Big 12 Era Team
F Michael Beasley
F Paul Pierce
F Kevin Durant
G Jamaal Tinsley
G Marcus Smart
Bench
C Joel Embiid
G Curtis Stinson
F Blake Griffin
G Jacob Pullen
G Tony Allen
G Andrew Wiggins
G Kareem Rush
-
A second team of
F Griffin
G Wiggins
G Allen
G Rush
G Stinson
Would be very salty. A 5 out/high screen and roll would be brutal.
-

I would slide Pierce down to the 2 and have Blake play center
-
Allen, Stinson and Smart aren't very good three-point shooters. You should have more guys that are good at that.
-
Also rim-protecting. I like some dominant backline guys.
-
surprised no one has mentioned lamarcus aldridge

This is a great list. Beasley should have been national player of the year when he was with us, giving the Big XII NPOY 3 years in a row with Durant-Beasley-Griffin
-
Allen, Stinson and Smart aren't very good three-point shooters. You should have more guys that are good at that.
Allen is a lock down defender, Stinson is a screen and roll back up PG and lock down defender, Smart is a screen and roll PG and lock down defender. I value that stuff too.
Between- Rush, Pullen, Pierce, Durant, Wiggins, Tinsley I tried to pick guys that would have a role to play instead of taking jumpshots when there are already elite shooter/scorers.
-
surprised no one has mentioned lamarcus aldridge
he is very good, and maybe should be there instead of embiid but embiid is such a game changer shot blocking wise. Also, at some point the amount of athletic F make putting slow back to basket guys in boring.
-
does anyone remember the game griffin had his sophomore season in the OOD? he had luis colon on him and only luis colon, for some reason.
29 points, 15 rebs (7 offensive). OU won 61-53.
bubbles4ksu held up a sign that said "blake griffin has gingervitis"

Chris Mihm
Raef Lafrentz/Nick Collison
Luke Axtell
Will Spalding/Tyrell Reed
Doug Gottlieb
-
also alec burks should definitely be on the all big 12 second team if youre just counting 1 season.

He is basically Jacob Pullen so I don't know why I'd need another one. I agree he is really good, but Stinson and Smart are much more effective on pick/roll and defense.

People's memories are so different from reality sometimes
It was Kansas senior Raef LaFrentz who plunged a dagger through the Wildcats' hearts, sinking a three-pointer with 2:39 remaining in the Jayhawks' 73-58 victory over KSU at sold-out Bramlage Coliseum.
``I think it was a dagger in coach (Roy) Williams' heart. He almost had a heart attack when I shot that three,'' LaFrentz said. He scored 10 consecutive points down the stretch, capping his scoring spree with the trifecta that gave KU a 69-58 lead.
``I was open, stepped up and knocked it down,'' LaFrentz said. ``I have a world of confidence in my three-point ability.''
``I do try to take it upon myself to step up when the team needs me, especially on the offensive end because that's one of my strengths,'' LaFrentz said. ``Paul (Pierce) was in foul trouble, so I figured what the heck, give it a shot.''
-
good find. Scot Pollard went 1-1 for 3 for his career on Senior Night.

Why do you need two Stinsons/Smarts? If they aren't dominating the ball how useful are they on offense? I guess I don't like Tinsley and Smart together.

Tonya has a point. We want really shitty three-point shooters on this team. Burks is superior in the ball-screen and on defense. Burks it is. Hope we didn't write that original down in pen.

just have durant and griffin play with these guys:
mike
billiam
jamar

and you'll win everything ever.

not the wooly era
I remember LaFrentz taking quite a few threes for KU, and just about every one was taken on a secondary break when he would trial the play and casually trot to around the top of the key before shooting straight on. He made a lot of them too, or maybe I just remember the ones he made more.
-
Has anyone included Fizer(sp?)? Kid was a baller.
-
or Cole Aldrich
LOL, not at all. Perry or Duhrel are far better comparisons. Raef was a huge pussy, was about 4" shorter than listed and cowered to guys like Loren Woods. iirc, a kid with downs (TJ Pugh) and a dave Mathews groupie (chenowith?) played significant minutes with Raef because of his pussiness on defense.
-

Jamaal Tinsley
Chauncey Billups
Kevin Durant
Michael Beasley
Blake Griffin
Ekpe Udoh
Kirk Hinrich
Kareem Rush
Tony Allen
Nick Collison
Andrew Wiggins
D.J. Augustin
Kelvin Cato
No order on the reserves.

That shooting and shot blocking coming off the bench is mighty tasty. Couple rugged dudes too. Oh my.
I seriously considered starting Udoh. Really liked that guy's game.

Quincy Acey would be my trash man.
-
Keith Langford is absolutely on my bench
-
Keith Langford is absolutely on my bench
mine too if I get like 50 guys on my bench

Surprised to see Heinrich not at least get a second squad mention. I probably overvalue him.

Ain't no sherrons?

Arthur Johnson? Ricky Paulding? Thomas Garner?

Oh man, Paulding, lol. I was actually thinking of Gilbert but he wore #4
-
Paulding vs Marquette in the tourney was an amazing performance
-
just a couple of mo cats talking shop
-
Also his nuts vs Frank Richards face
-
Remember when Texas Tech had Jarrius Jackson and Ronald Ross? Classic names
-
All time teams from big 12 schools would be fun too
-
Tinsley shaved points, and probably would on an all-time all-big xii team too.
-
Clemente
Pullen
Walker
Beasley
Serge
-
Remember when Texas Tech had Jarrius Jackson and Ronald Ross? Classic names
Was it Singletary that had ripples in his head?
-
Ain't no sherrons?
would take over langford.
A lot of people may forget just how good and explosive Langford was before his injurie(s). Still not real close to an all top 15 player.
Has anyone mentioned Desmond Mason? Complete stud and awesome dunker?
-
Remember when Texas Tech had Jarrius Jackson and Ronald Ross? Classic names
Was it Singletary that had ripples in his head?
dunno. I do remember JT Tiller from Mizzou having a severe case of winkle head tho.
-
I just had a hilarious thought that if you made an all-dreads team, Blake young would not even make my bench
-
Nice mention on Hinrich (sp?) Cf3. While some may be better pure point guards, Hinrich would be lethal running things in transition.
-

Did he ever have dreads? Or are we including long braids?

Is there a spot on this team for a sharpshooter off the bench or are there already too many good shooters for it to matter?

I mentioned Heinrich nearly half an hour before CF3 and its like it never happened.
I'm gutted right now

Good mention by you. I wasn't online and didn't go back far enough in the thread.

Cookie Belcher

Nebraska has some of the best names- Cookie Belcher, Kimani Ffriend

There was a Christmas in there somewhere

Also rim-protecting. I like some dominant backline guys.

I wouldn't put Pullen in my top 10.
-
I wouldn't put Pullen in my top 10.
I don't think any objective person would. probably not even top 30 if we are being honest. nearly 20 years of big 12 ball has produced lots of talent.
-
Andre Emmett from Tech had some good Big 12 seasons. Amazing dunker.
-
Are we excluding Colorado, Nub, aTm and mizz players too? (not that I can think of many off the top of my head anyway)
-
All time teams from big 12 schools would be fun too
Oklahoma State, because I'm up in the middle of the night.
G - Marcus Smart (better all-around game and stronger than Lucas III on a team that lacks size.)
G - Tony Allen
G/F - Desmond Mason (better teams than Anderson, so less scoring, but these could be switched)
F - Joey Graham
F/C - Mario Boggan (bad person https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn2VvRVBjyM)
G/F - James Anderson
G - John Lucas III
G - Markel Brown
F - Ivan McFarlin
F - LeBryan Nash
A lot of good players, but mostly guards. Little real size, and their best forwards were smaller guys. The only real bruiser is Boggan. Could put a 3-pt shooter on the bench somewhere, but I figured no need with all the scoring ability. Doug Gottlieb might actually warrant a spot on the roster, or even in the starting lineup due to his distribution with a team this stacked. While not very big a good collection of 6-6 6-7 type dudes.
A lot of these Big 12 teams would be just sick. 2003-04 Pokes were disgusting.
-
All time teams from big 12 schools would be fun too
G - Denis Clemente (really could be switched with Angel depending on what you favor)
G - Jacob Pullen
G - Rodney McGruder
F - Bill Walker
F - Michael Beasley
F - Cartier Martin
F- Jerimiah Massey
G - Angel Rodriguez
F - Dom Sutton
F - Curtis Kelly (wins out over Gip, Jamar and Hoskins dude to blocking ablility).
KSU's bench forwards were tough to choose. You could make an argument for Sutton starting along with Denis, Pullen, Mike and Bill. It would give them an excellent defender and add some scoring to the second unit with McGruder dropping down.
-
Denis could not be switched for angel no matter what you favor. JFC
-
And I love angel
-
Cartier over hot rod
-
Yeah and Denis probably plays 40 minutes
-
Dom Sutton was overrated. I'd take Seibrandt, DeJesus, Travis Reynoldsor Paco May over him.
-
oh we can have a bench now?
have to throw our guy kim english in there somewhere, JFC guys he hasnt even got a mention yet
-
So this is now just a name-drop thread. I just realized Nebraska has had two Cookies. What are the odds of that?

That's what I thought. How are we coming on digging up a big 12 player named Christmas
-
Who was the dude from Okie State that went shot for shot with Durant in that game where Sean Sutton almost fainted?
Byron Eaton?
-
Raef was a slightly less physical version of Perry Ellis surrounded with better players.
LOL, this is not accurate at all. Raef was a white.
Kaun and Aldrich are pretty awful comparisons. Raef was known for his mid-range game and especially turnaround 15 footers. He was considerably more polished than either of those two offensively.
-
I bet mean people called him Raep LaFrentz because of KU's sexual assault troubles. Opposing fans can be classless. I imagine he hardly did any rapes himself.
-

I don't recall KU being known for Sexual Assault U back in Raef's era. So they were either sweeping it under the rug really well or it increased quite a bit when Self rolled into town.
-
My team.
Coach- Self (Duh)
Assistant- Townsend (Gotta have a bagman)
Starters-
G- Chalmers - The shot, great floor leader
G- Hinrich - Need 2 guards that can handle and shoot
F- Rush - Perfect "3" for the college game, can go inside and hit the 3.
F- LaFrentz- Rhode Island/Arizona ruined his legacy. Kid could play.
F- Collison- Left KU as the Big12's all time leading scorer
Bench Big's
Marcus Morris- Shame he has to come off the bench
Gooden - Great rebounder and scorer
Pierce- Best NBA Career but I think LaFrentz was better in college
Aldrich- Gotta have 1 "Rim Protector"
Guards-
Collins- "Skinny" version only
Vaughn- Would have trouble seeing the floor on this team.
Boschee- Only gets a spot so I can hear Bob Davis yell "SWWIIIIIIIISSSHH"

I like this squad but I drop Dom and add JO, if only for all the DOBs running pick and roll with Angel. Angel is clearly the starter at point on defense alone btw.

Angel is not starting over Denis. Do you guys not remember how awesome Denis was? Denis transition heat-check 3's were one of the greatest things that ever happened to K-State basketball.

JO would be a great addition. Great back-line help as well. Still plenty of back-court defenders left on this stud team even without Dom (who could guard both).

FWIW, I loved Denis, and watching him run with these thoroughbreds would be a treat. The main reason I mentioned a possible switch with Angel is for ball distribution in the half-court. Both were Second-team All-Big 12, but Denis played in a tougher Big 12 imo.
-
sonofdaxjones (claimed multiple times not to hate "Denny" and then proceeded to talk about everything he didn't like about him, namely bad shots, turnovers, and Frank never yelling at him)

Angel haters are/ were pretty intense, especially after he left. I can't imagine of Denis had played at KSU for two years (with his production) then transferred to Miami. It would have been disgusting.

Damn, that hurts. And I wasn't even advocating that Angel was better than Denis. Just that it was a possibility he could play with a hypothetical starting unit of great Big-12 Cats.
-
go to the archives and search "denny". It is a treasure trove of denis hating led by dax.

I mean, I agree with sd here. Angel is/was very good.

Jeff Boschee.
