I've been thinking a lot about how freaking rad the future is going to be. I mean we're way smarter than we've ever been and technology is expanding at an exponential pace. Like my kids will never know a world without iPads. iPads will be like rotary phones to them. THINK ABOUT THAT! THINK ABOUT WHAT THE NEXT GENERATION WILL COME UP WITH!
holy crap it's going to be great.
Do you guys ever think about that kind of stuff, too? :ksu:
-
when every child is born, they will have a computer injected into their brainstem
-
The human race as we know it will be extinct in 100 years
-
What blows my mind is there will be technology that we can't even think of now. My parents never would've dreamed of computers when they were not that much younger than me. Now, its iPads/smartphones.
Google Glass is ridiculous imo, but I think it is technology before anyone knows how to use it well. What will that bring? When technology accelerates at a faster pace than there are reasonable uses for that excites me. I get pretty pumped that people are just creating and leaving others to figure out practical applications.

mmm i don't think so.

super babies!
Bus seriously, how much did the old days suck? We didn't even have the internet when I was in grade school. People were idiots and thought it was OK for coaches to act like the Rice coach. Also during the renaissance they didn't have telephones. THE RENAISSANCE IS NOW.
The human race as we know it will be extinct in 100 years
the eff is this crap?
-
I am really looking forward to wanting to know something, buying some sort of a knowledge upgrade on Amazon, then downloading it directly into my head.
Boom! I now know Spanish!

YES!!! also we are learning more about ourselves, people are doing scientific research about being happy and laughing and crap, and we are learning more about our origins and just being smarter in general.

Maybe that is what would make Google Glass more practical. A translation system that translates other languages and then you say something back in english and it shows you a phonetic response in that language. You would have to repeat yourself but boom! Language barrier destroyed and hands free.

no more baristas. every conceivable service industry job will be replaced by automated kiosks.

I fear that human interaction will be non existent.. This is a time when others would rather text than talk. And if you walk around 90% of the people have their head down looking at a phone or ipod or something.
-
Cell phones will be everything. Your National ID, Credit Cards, communication, internet access, monitor your vitals, home computer, the "keys" to your self-driving car and house, etc. Is that too much power for a device that can be lost so easily? Maybe.

human interaction and device interaction will become indistinguishable. see: baby brain computer injection.

Are we not interacting right now? I guarantee you this interaction is more meaningful than whatever conversation I would have had with some dope on the train this morning.

this is probably true but did you try to initiate a conversation with some dope on the train? I think we possibly will become to reliant on technology, its already used as a crutch by many.

Of course not, didn't I tell you he was a dope? I heard him talking and he was just talking about his stupid weekend.
And reliance on technology is great, it frees up our mind to do more important things. I mean we got out of the stone age because we started relying on new fangled technologies like shelter and agriculture. (roughly).

try to imagine a world without technology. now, imagine a world with endless ideas and creativity. now, imagine a world with some technology (not a lot, not a little) and with a medium amount of ideas and creativity. imagine living in a world with no borders (geographic, socioeconomic, linguistic). imagine the movement of information real time and the impacts of the borderless world developing at an unprecedented rate.
this data will be data for the world.

3d printing is going to be as big as the internet and probably at least as much if not more disruptive to the overall economy. I would guess we're probably about 20 years or so away from it being mainstream. imagine not ever having to order anything or go to a store to buy anything ever again. you just download the plans and print it.
mind.
blown.

3D printing is pretty mind blowing.
I'm sure this is luked, but its still pretty cool:
Price of 1 gigabyte:
1981 - $300,000
1987 - $50,000
1990 - $10,000
1994 - $1,000
1997 - $100
2000 - $10
2004 - $1
2012 - $0.10

I really need to research this 3D printing thing, it sounds awesome. But would I have to assemble the product or does it print it fully assembled?
-
This is kind of what I imagine the future like, but more awesome

I was using 3d printing at KSU back in 2001. old hat, folks!
But I think the medical implications will probably be bigger than home applications. BUT I COULD BE REALLY WRONG AND THAT'S AWESOME!!!
-
I had a 3D printer attached to my abacus back in my State days.

3d printing can make fully functioning "things" inside a case. for example, puppeteers can use them to make doll heads, where all the moving parts are inside the head, but you can't access the inside at all (without cutting it open). jay leno uses one to replace impossible to find engine parts on his old cars. the uses right now are still pretty basic, but the potential is pretty great.
-
Haven't seen michigancat this excited about anything before. Starting to get pretty amped for the future myself!

yes.

Eh, I kind of feel like the future is here and it's not nearly as exciting as I thought it would be. I mean, it's 2013 and the most impressive thing we have is an ipad. :jerk:
We still haven't even cured cancer for Christ's sake.
I mean, touch screens blew my mind at the epcot center when I was 8, but we are still relying on the same basic forms of energy and transportation as we were in 1950. We have made huge strides in communication, so hopefully that will make the next 50 years more eventful than the last.
-
We're going to Mars soon. That's pretty elite.
Also, I don't think many things get cured. The money is in the treatment. For example, I heard a thing on NPR this fall that said that there is a known drug that we could take to cure and prevent Lime disease, but that no one is producing it for humans because it wouldn't be profitable. The same doctor said that the drug is being produced, but that it is being made for dogs only right now. He said that they have heard many reports of ppl telling their Vet that they want it and having the vet prescribe it to the dog so that the owner can take it. It's not cancer, but the situation is pretty mumped up.

That's what you think. Big Pharm won't let that happen
-
They found a cure for cancer a long time ago. But there's less money in a cure.

I think you're being overly simplistic. I also think as people understand more about the body you will see more healing and less treatment. It will probably take the US nationalizing health care to make it more of a reality, which I think would be great.

I plan on 3d printing me up some robot workers.
-
i'm going to 3d print a bunch of 3d printers, and use each of them to print more 3d printers. pretty soon, i will be the 3d printer king of the world.
-
How long does it take to print a 3d printer? Is it faster or slower than the amount of time it would take for 2 robot workers to just manufacture one?
-
if its slower than the robot workers, then i'm going to 3d print a part for the 3d printer that makes it print faster.

Maybe the first one or two, but once they follow the curve for a couple days, Clams will be crashing markets in southeast asia with his production levels.
QT will be giving out coupons for free 3d printers when you buy a hotdog. Problem is that no one will redeem them because the cost of shipping will make the 3d printer twice as expensive as just picking one up at Wal-Clams on the way back home.
-
I'm going to 3D print the hell out of gasoline and be a future oil baron. I will purchase 'clams 3D printer printing conglomerate and shut it down just because I can. I will also be printing a bunch of gold and blood diamonds to sell. Oh and also electricity, will be printing the hell out of that to sell to California. You're welcome rusty. I will be so goddamned motherfucking paid in the future. Filthy, sons.

Good luck enforcing that. 3d printer piracy will be even easier than internet piracy.
-
No. It won't be easier than internet piracy since it will BE internet piracy. You need a CAD file to print anything, and those CAD files will live in the cloud. Unless you make all your own detailed 3D CADs, which I'm sure the casual user won't.
-
With one caveat - that scanning technology will make printing random objects without a CAD file easier but right now it's really low fidelity.

No, I'm going to steal people's plans by having my robot workers break into wherever those servers are stored and just swipe the data the old fashioned way. There's no risk at all because nobody will be able to trace my robots back to me if they get caught and I can just 3d print some more. Nobody will be able to trace where their data went like they could with internet piracy. I bet internet piracy is actually kind of hard to pull off in the future.

Rental cars will be useless too. You want a starbucks? Just teleport there and get one. Also, franchise chains will be useless. You want a Starbucks? Just teleport to Seattle and get it. Maybe the drive through window version of the teleport will happen too? Like, you call Seattle and then they teleport you a coffee to your countertop? Boom.
Guys, this has promise. Everyone should put their money in teleport stocks.

I'm going to be too lazy to teleport to the coffee shop. Any chance they can teleport the coffee right to my desk?

People are not going to have teleporters in their homes - they are going to be too expensive, at least initially. You will have to go to the teleporter station and pay to use one. Therefore SD will just have to convert from collecting airline miles to teleporter bucks.
-
Teleportation rendering airline miles useless. You want to go somewhere, just go. Don't worry about a hotel either, just come back when you are ready to sack out.
eff sd don't read that bro
Rental cars will be useless too. You want a starbucks? Just teleport there and get one. Also, franchise chains will be useless. You want a Starbucks? Just teleport to Seattle and get it. Maybe the drive through window version of the teleport will happen too? Like, you call Seattle and then they teleport you a coffee to your countertop? Boom.
Guys, this has promise. Everyone should put their money in teleport stocks.
I need a decision from the future judges... can 3D printers print the coffee? Or food for that matter?
TIA.

Technically, you could print it. However, it would immediately spill all over and ruin your Clams Mart printer causing you to print another one with your back up Clams Mart printer-printed printer.
Or, you could just teleport to Clams Mart and buy a new one.
Grumblings that it will be quite some time before Clams Printer Emporium fixes that design flaw.

I don't plan on printing any, so no.

Yeah, teleportation is for suckers. You die when you enter, and some clone of you comes out the other side. I don't understand why anybody would do that. I mean, I could care less if there is some clone of me out there when I'm dead.

Your clone would be so confused like wtf did I just teleport for I don't remember oh well I'll just go home and then the new clone would be confused why it is in a strange persons home...

Pro Tip: that is propaganda being spread by airlines and the hotel lobby. completely untrue.

No, your brain would be reconstructed and have all of your memories. As far as your clone knows, he's you and just successfully teleported. Little does he know that the next time he walks into a teleportation device, everything is going to go black and he will cease to exist. Only some clone of him will live on.

Nope, the new clone will be totally confused and itll be hilarious

May be a bad idea then. I mean, how many homeless underground tunnel cities can there be in the nation? Gotta think that the room will fill up quick with all the clones being created at Starbucks.

The original body that walks into the teleporter is vaporized, and the device vacuums his/her ashes out so nobody realizes what just happened. It's not like these devices are just creating extra people. One man enters, one man exits.
-
Nuts Kicked has obviously seen The Prestige.
Yep. The Fly also applies, imo. Think about it. If Jeff Goldblum simply teleported from one chamber to the other, he wouldn't have had his DNA combined with that fly's. The chamber just vaporized him and that fly (they both died instantly) and created an entirely new being on the other side that just happened to share Goldblum's memories.
-
So after you teleport a few times your brain is going to be total mush (well actually your clone's clone's clone's brain). That's already been documented in Muliplicity.
-
Movies aren't real, people. Teleportation could happen and it could be glorious.
-

Multiplicity was a movie about experimental cloning technology, though. It's hard to say how long it will take us to perfect the process, but I'm confident that we will eventually get it down to where that no longer happens. There is just too much on the line for us not to.
-

Movies aside, how could teleportation work without completely vaporizing your very being and then rebuilding you on the other side? How do you not effectively die during that process, and how do you know that it would be you that comes out the other side and not something that really is nothing more than your rebuilt cells?
-
Getting back on track here, the future will be awesome.
I am really looking forward to the Google car.

this won't be a big deal because your entire consciousness will exist in a computer. It will just be streamed from the data farm into your newly assembled body.

If you retain all your memories and are living on the other side, it's a success. who cares how it happens? I mean I can't explain how angry birds landed in my phone, but I can reap the benefits.

If your experience is to enter nothingness when you step into the chamber and your former consciousness is reborn into a different body, then it's not really a success. You are simply dead.
-
If you don't know you're dead, are you really dead?

James Webb Space Telescope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Webb_Space_Telescope)
this thing is going to be rough ridin' amazing. like, 97% of what we know of space beyond our solar system is due to the hubble telescope, which was launched in 1990 and orbits 347 miles up. the JWST will go up in 2018 and orbit one million miles out.
-

Pretty great point here.
-
If you don't know you're dead, are you really dead?
Well, that's the question. I think you would be dead and the body that comes out the other end would just be some other person with your consciousness. Walking into that teleportation chamber would be the last thing you do. Your body and consciousness would still be there for everyone else, though. I certainly wouldn't be willing to try it. Best case scenario, you make it to the other side and still can't convince fence sitters like me that it's really you and not some copy just replacing your dead body. Worst case scenario, you never make it to the other side.
Edit: I don't really think the question is so much whether you will know if you are dead. Whatever comes out of the teleporter will be alive. You just won't know if you are still you. I think people are confusing thoughts and memories as existence. Just because a regenerated body shares your thoughts and memories, that doesn't mean that it is you and that you successfully survived a teleportation. There are plenty of living people today who have lost their thoughts and memories.
-
NK, you are really rough ridin' up my looking forward to the future.

Not worth it. You would be worse than a 90 year old on a smart phone with pretty much every aspect of life when you arrive at the future. You would be living in an underground city with all the homeless mutants, shitting into a bucket.

My biggest concern with going the cryonics route is that there would be absolutely no incentive for the future civilization to thaw me out. My money would be all but worthless to them. They would either keep me frozen or just pull the plug and let me die. Best case scenario, they thaw me out to run scientific experiments on.

There is a company (nanotech, iirc) that made a solar printable ink that could be printed onto foil and was something like 60% more efficient than a traditional panel type. They did this like 3 or 4 yrs ago and have been pumping out at max capacity in Germany ever since. The europeans have been keeping them busy at the large scale production plant level the the point that it hasn't filtered down to the consumer level yet. That said, paint for houses, window mullions for commercial buildings, car roofs, etc can't be too far away.
The main issue is storage. Batteries need to really come a long way to make it affordable.

What do they hook it up to to charge it? It seems like you would need a much beefier power supply than a wall outlet for that to work.

Your SIII battery doesn't have the capacity to run a phone for a year, though. Or were you saying that the battery would still need to be charged every day, and you would have to replace the battery after 1 year?

Honestly, either a single charge for a year, or a daily 30sec charge would be a huge deal. Not on the same level as each other, but still huge.

IBM animates atoms:
Okay, so scientists can animate atoms. While that’s intrinsically cool, why does it matter? Well, it matters because these techniques can be applied to practical technologies. For example, use of a scanning, tunnelling electron microscope enabled scientists to store a bit of computer data into only 12 atoms last year. On your computer, it takes about 1 million atoms to store that data.
“Research means asking questions beyond those required to find good short-term engineering solutions to problems. As data creation and consumption continue to get bigger, data storage needs to get smaller, all the way down to the atomic level,” said IBM researcher Andreas Heinrich in a press release. “We’re applying the same techniques used to come up with new computing architectures and alternative ways to store data to making this movie.”

have you guys seen this graphene stuff? wow
one of the zillion potential uses for that stuff is to simulate the insanely small, ribbed structures on cicada's wings that function to pull apart bacteria under it's own weight. anything covered with that material would be totally resistant to bacteria. seems like something hospitals and public transportation could really benefit from.

Ya guys I don't know. I'm sure it's super expensive and/or impractical or something. But don't a ton of today's technologies start out as impractabilities? I don't doubt that they have something like that, I just wonder when we'll see it, if ever. I think defense spending pushing a lot of this stuff.

Yeah. Not shooting it down. Sounds amazing and I hope this isn't something that gets used specifically for the military for a long time before we all get it. Seriously, something like that battery, if adapted to other uses as other scales, could be a huge game changer for energy.

Roughly 350 miles per Google Earth at .5 hrs is about 60 MPH below Mach 1. Average Joe commuter riding something going just under the sound barrier for half an hour. This one seems a ways out there.
-
that speed is attainable. another option would be something i call transient gravity. essentially, i've patented a device that turns earth's gravitational pull almost onto its side. instead of pulling directly down, it pulls along a plane parallel to other areas of the earth's axis.
pretty simple crap here guys.
-
and obviously the solution here is to reduce the object's drag coefficient until it's barely/not measurable. that way you can conserve energy.

spray your swim trunks with it. seems like that would be a great one, no dripping when you get out of the pool.

Someone should buy this and spray their car.
Also, I am going to spray my running shoes first. I hate how quickly shoes with netting on them turn all extra gross and stuff.

LOL, idiots say crap like this with every new technology. Like, Plato or Aristotle or someone said similar crap about writing stuff down - he thought you had to memorize crap to really know it. LOL what a dumbass.
Of course, the "beats all other kinds of locomotion into a cocked hat" was a great line.

Exactly. When the sun started going down it was time to stop playing Atari 2600 at your buddies house and go home to watch Cosby.

yeah, but he also includes data on minimum turn radii and things like that. Like I said, it's still worth throwing a few million government dollars at the thing to see if it all checks out.

Multi tasking. Farming and bombing. To the outsider it seems like they don't belong together at all, but Sudan has evidentally found some sort of synergy to them.

Philosophers and political writers have waxed on about the dawning of a new utopia since the beginning of history. Few, however, have had the guts, the hubris, or simply the fatigue-induced insouciance to stamp a date on it.
Today Morgan Stanley joins that few:
chart redacted
The chart above, released as a part of a note we covered earlier, shows that autonomous cars will deliver a Phase 4 utopia in just 20 years. We actually think Morgan Stanley is grossly underselling the technology. Here is how they define Phase 4:
Autonomous capability: This is an “ideal” world akin to common science fiction in which all cars on the road have at least a Phase 3 level of autonomous capability (including retrofitting older cars), full V2V/V2X capability and the ability to drive from Point A to Point B with zero human intervention.
Scenario: A family of four wants to travel from New York to Chicago. They have dinner at home, climb into the vehicle at 9pm, watch a movie projected on the windscreen, and then go to sleep in their fold-flat seats, waking up at their destination the next morning.
Functions: Fully autonomous driving with no human intervention, with the focus likely to be on lifestyle/entertainment of occupants and manual car control as a back-up/supporting function (or disallowed). Cars will look very different from cars of today. Cars can also travel with no occupants. Remote control/disable functionality necessary.
Ideal worlds should be made of sexier stuff.
But let’s start with the bit we agree on: Cars can also travel with no occupants.
Sort of how after filming a movie or TV show, it can “also” be viewed later by someone else at a different location. Or how, in addition to running an operating system, computers can “also” run applications.
What we think this means is that the entire concept of a car as an appliance is replaced by cars as the physical backbone of a transportation network or cloud. Our family of four does not climb into “the vehicle”. They order transport from their home in New York to the destination in Chicago.
A vehicle is routed to their home. It belongs to a massive fleet of vehicles — our family happens to prefer gPort, though iGo is the marquee brand. Driven-cars today spend most of their time idle. Such low capacity usage means that the effective user costs of capital are high. In contrast, peak-time pricing, thick urban markets and smart dispatching ensure that the vehicle arriving to our family’s home is in nearly constant use or cleaning. Importantly, the battery inside of it is always, but always, being used or charged.
The savings from efficient capital use pile up quickly. Let’s say the average cost of a new car in the US is roughly $30k. A family with two cars is looking at a $60k capital outlay (ignoring the staggering of vehicle cohorts). A very generous estimate would put each car on the road for four hours a day. The other 20 hours — that ‘s 86% of the day — are spent rusting away in a driveway, parking lot, or garage.
Rather than owning 100% of a capital fleet that spends 14% of its time in operation, the family could effectively rent 14% of a vehicle’s usage from a retail transportation company whose fleet was in usage almost 100% of the time. For the very same user cost of capital, the family could ride in a $360K vehicle. Or, more practically given the trends in inequality, the costs of transportation would simply fall dramatically.
Now, 100% usage may seem crazy, but here is where we get to the real integration between electric vehicles and autonomous cars. The cost of the electric vehicle is all about the battery. Because autonomous cars can also travel with no occupants, they can be programmed to return unfailingly to the battery-switching station the moment their errands are over. The previous battery begins charging, and the cars are fitted with a new pack sized for the next appointment. Here again, smart dispatching allows battery packs to be pooled for cost-sensitive, long-haul commercial transportation and peak-pricing shifts scheduled so that retail customers never have to wait for an open battery.
This is a revolutionary new experience, no longer designed around the twin needs of the driver to effectively pilot the vehicle, and of the vehicle to be left idle until a driver is available. What we have now is a playground on wheels, one that is more expensive and likely more fun than most folks’ homes.
And this is just on the retail transportation side. The real action is commercial, where — freed from the cost of the driver — the fleet of delivery vehicles can easily expand six-fold; autonomous cars can be sent on cross-continent or even cross-globe errands; and tons of prefab materials can be massed at more remote locations — Williston Basin, North Dakota — well in advance of human arrival.
have to register to use the link.

The real action is commercial, where — freed from the cost of the driver — the fleet of delivery vehicles can easily expand six-fold; autonomous cars can be sent on cross-continent or even cross-globe errands; and tons of prefab materials can be massed at more remote locations — Williston Basin, North Dakota — well in advance of human arrival.

i don't pretend to understand the science here, but the Time article i read compared the function of a quantum computer to the human brain and i thought that sounded neat.
http://www.dwavesys.com/ (http://www.dwavesys.com/)
Quantum Computation
Rather than store information as 0s or 1s as conventional computers do, a quantum computer uses qubits – which can be a 1 or a 0 or both at the same time. This “quantum superposition”, along with the quantum effects of entanglement and quantum tunnelling, enable quantum computers to consider and manipulate all combinations of bits simultaneously, making quantum computation powerful and fast.
How D-Wave Systems Work
Quantum computing uses an entirely different approach than classical computing. A useful analogy is to think of a landscape with mountains and valleys.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dwavesys.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Flandscape_EXPORT.jpg&hash=41d5df6d196c729136a2ca850b15a5d79d9122ad)
Solving optimization problems can be thought of as trying to find the lowest point on this landscape. Every possible solution is mapped to coordinates on the landscape, and the altitude of the landscape is the “energy’” or “cost” of the solution at that point. The aim is to find the lowest point on the map and read the coordinates, as this gives the lowest energy, or optimal solution to the problem.
Classical computers running classical algorithms can only "walk over this landscape". Quantum computers can tunnel through the landscape making it faster to find the lowest point. The D-Wave processor considers all the possibilities simultaneously to determine the lowest energy required to form those relationships. The computer returns many very good answers in a short amount of time - 10,000 answers in one second. This gives the user not only the optimal solution or a single answer, but also other alternatives to choose from.
D-Wave systems use "quantum annealing" to solve problems. Quantum annealing “tunes” qubits from their superposition state to a classical state to return the set of answers scored to show the best solution.

As far as I can tell, the "quantum" in quantum computing is, at best, just a metaphor.

As far as I can tell, the "quantum" in quantum computing is, at best, just a metaphor.
they are creating quantum situations in these "qubits" but there isn't much computing being done. government agencies and defense contractors are investing mere tens of millions of dollars at this point. if/when the process gets closer to its potential it will be worth more money and more attention. it's exciting to see how far they've come in 10 years of existence.

What an unbelievably ridiculous article. How can any idiot equate a "utopian" existence with simply having nicer crap? Talk about the folly of man.

I think his point is, at least how I interpreted it, is that with this extra time we save from not driving we will live better lives, care for our children better, be more productive, etc.

Shouldn't we already be living in a utopia since cars save us so much time vs riding around on horseback and washing machines save us time vs beating our clothes on a rock by the river?

Mrs. Gooch gets it! People have probably been saying that since the dawn of time. I mean, cool stuff is cool, and can possibly save you time, but a true utopia, which I personally believe humans are incapable of because it means we would stop striving for crap, would be when we are done inventing new "things" and move on to bigger questions.

An excerpt:
And here you find civilized man.
Civilized man refused to adapt himself to his environment.
Instead he adapted his environment to suit him.
So he built cities, roads, vehicles, machinery.
And he put up power lines to run his labour-saving devices.
But he didn't know when to stop.
The more he improved his surroundings to make life easier...
...the more complicated he made it.
Now his children are sentenced to to years of school, to learn...
...how to survive in this complex and hazardous habitat.
And civilized man, who refused to adapt to his surroundings...
...now finds he has to adapt and re-adapt...
...every hour of the day to his self-created environment.

I think charging is too slow for stations to make much sense. It would be way better to have battery exchange stations. Just change them out like you do propane tanks.

From what I have read in the last year or two, we have the tech now to do this, but the concern is safety considering how stupid most American drivers are.

Well, in the future it would be nice to have over-the-air charging infrastructure built into the roadways so that cars never need to stop to get a charge. We aren't nearly there yet and something needs to be done for the present, though.
-
I just thought of an idea of making a car that runs on wind energy. Because you know how when you're driving there is a lot of wind because of how fast you are going (if you don't believe me just stick your head out the window while driving down I-70 sometime), well that would produce the electricity to run the car. Just have to figure out how to get the windmill on top of the car.

Most states can barely keep the roads they have now passable. These new magic roads ain't coming anytime soon.

Agreed on the hatred of driving. I take public transit everywhere. I'm mulling over taking a job in Topeka and moving the fam back to Kansas, but I'm skeptical because it is topeka, public transit there sucks so I'd have to drive, which also means I'd have to purchase a second car so wife and kids can get around. Hyperloop can't come soon enough.

this is a stupid thread. there is no such thing as the future. there is only now.
The point you call now is already the past. The past no longer exists. There is only the future.

Does time even exist?

hard to tell what us humans have hallucinated and what we haven't at this point.
-
Does time even exist?
hard to tell what us humans have hallucinated and what we haven't at this point.
Yes, it is.
-
I believe there is a more authoritative plane where time is more physical in nature and not as uncontrolled linear change as we experience. I believe in that plane, time is kind of like how space is for us, it goes infinitely in all directions where there is not real beginning or end.
-
I don't think time can be anything but linear and uncontrollable.
I also don't think space/the uni are infinite. I get that math and what not lean on that right now, but I think we just don't know the necessary physics to understand any different now. I mean, infinity exists in math, but I don't think it possible to exist in reality in any other way. We are just too small, and unknowing, to see space as anything but infinite, I bet.

Time is a flat circle.
-
I don't think time can be anything but linear and uncontrollable.
So you think we're essentially in a really big bottle? Could be true. But for me, it's easier to think space goes on infinitely than it is for me to think time has gone back infinitely. I mean, I can't really wrap my head around something/anything being here forever. Whether someone talks w/ religious ideology or strictly secular beliefs, the whole negative infinity timeline just gets glossed over. To me, the thought of the universe simply "always being here" or God "always being here" is incredibly difficult to comprehend.
In our dimension time is obviously somewhat linear. Although we know it can be manipulated. I simply believe anther dimension exists where it can be completely manipulated, so there really is no beginning or end to time.
-
I may be wrong, and maybe some physicscats can set me straight, but we can only manipulate time relatively, in how it is experienced from a point perspective by means of gravity(and probably speed or something). To me, that doesn't mean we are manipulating time, just your perspective of it.
Also, infinity seems lazy to me as an explanation of anything outside of math itself.
Again, I think we are too small, or it's too big, to understand it at this point.
-
If space isn't infinite, then what do you imagine you would find at the end of it?
-

Correct, time can be manipulated by an objects perspective, but does that cheapen the effect. I mean, in a planet of the apes (the original) sense, how mind blowing is it that one person could live a few years while people from the place the traveler left are experiencing time much much faster. That's some crazy crap.
Time is actually a very difficult concept to define even by the world's smartest physicists. For instance, is time independent of change or simply a measure of change? Example, if everything in the universe simply froze, does time continue on? Obviously, our perception of time would stop and we wouldn't know anything happened if it simply started back up. We would be none the wiser. But if time is linear and independent of change, then time continued on during the freeze. But if time did continue on, what is time actually? When you attempt to explain it scientifically, it's very difficult. I watched a show where they were interviewing the physics whiz bangs and they really don't know what to say about it. At least not as a concensus.
-

I don't agree with his assessment of finite space, but I do think there are limits to the contents of the universe. But there is no boundary IMO.
-
If space isn't infinite, then what do you imagine you would find at the end of it?
The universe is finite but it is expanding at a rate much greater than we would ever be able to travel therefore we could never reach the edge.

What holds the nothing? More nothing? That just seems silly, imo. No offense to anyone.
I am not a religious person, but the finite/infinite thing is the boundary of science and religion, imo.
I have no clue, but the idea that there is an endless nothing is weird. I mean, to a fly, KS probably feels infinite.

I get your point to a degree, but time is undeniably the most valuable of commodities in existence. Defining it is pretty important. Consider gravity, we have theories to what it actually is (the stretching of the fabric of space rough ridin' stretching space's "fabric" wtf! it is critical to the world we live in by virtual any measure. Time is equally, if not more, important.

I am about to get super The Big Trainy here, but I skimmed an article a few months ago on IFLS that said they think they have identified two more fundamental forces and that they think gravity may soon be ousted as a fundamental force and that the combo of these two new forces are effecting what we experience as gravity. I should probably actually read the rest of the article, but thought I would wait until they played around with it a little more so that this isn't a "we found particles moving faster than light so watch out Sirr Parker because we are coming for your early season 1998 ass" moment.
-
Post it in the science article thread if you find it.
-
time isn't a thing, its a concept we invented in order to describe the world around us, like numbers.
-
Oh, numbers are definitely things.
-
Numbers are made up, dunce.
-
They have properties independent of thought. I suppose time does, too.
-
They have properties independent of thought. I suppose time does, too.
Do they?
-
They have properties independent of thought. I suppose time does, too.
Do they?
Yes. Imagine two integers that no one has ever thought of before. Do they have a sum? Of course.
-
Math and physics are the universal language of the universe.
-
Well, that's question begging. But also, your hypo proves too much (for you).
-
Well, that's question begging. But also, your hypo proves too much (for you).
The idea that there are integers no one has thought of is meaningless to you? It makes perfect sense to me. Just as much as the idea that there are parts of the Earth no one has seen.
-
One exists without resort to the human mind; one doesn't. Matter matters.
-
Sounds arbitrary.
-
it's not quite self driving, but i use the crap out of cruise control everywhere i go in town. (is this legal)
-
Sounds arbitrary.
I think numbers are more akin to symbols, just like language itself. It is an intellectual abstraction. Your hypo definitely requires application of logic in order to prove. Numbers do not exist without intelligent life abstracting them.
-
If space isn't infinite, then what do you imagine you would find at the end of it?
Such a fun question to think about. Almost makes me want to be an astrophysicist.
-
I've always considered numbers to ultimately just be a shorthand to apply logic. Pure logic exists outside of people, but I'm not convinced we know (or could know) what pure logic is.
-
Sounds arbitrary.

You're splitting hairs here. Nothing truly exists without the concept originating within intelligent life's brain. So you can't have one without the other.

The old tree falling in the forest canard? I knew that was a possible rebuttal, but honestly, I'm pretty phocking sure a tree falling in a forest still creates sound waves even if no one is around.
Or Schrodinger's cat? That puss is either alive or dead. Human knowledge doesn't change that reality.
I don't find those thought experiments very useful, tbh.

I don't see why physicality isn't a property, like the property of being able to be summed with another number.

I didn't mean to think about specific numbers. I was trying to get at an idea that something could have a property of an integer independent of anyone thinking about it. Just like a patch of Earth could have properties of granite even though no one has ever seen it.

See, here’s the deal with this kind of headline and this response.
https://twitter.com/rtjcooper/status/975778114289647616
First of all, how many miles have they driven without a fatality, and how does that compare to the general public. Second, the same physics still apply to autonomous cars. I highly doubt this thing just swerved into her, and she very well could have not been paying attention. An autonomous car still abides by the same physics so if it doesn’t have room to stop then this can happen. Third, as the software gets better it will prevent crashes and fatalities. Tesla had that fatality last year or the year before where it ran under a semi crossing the road. Even with that death it was statistically safer per fatality/miles driven.
That kind of comment is from an ignorant person who can’t see beyond their own nose. I’m sorry but that kind of reasoning without knowing what they are talking about just drives me nuts.

Yeah, totally agree on that. Most people are texting on their phone eating a hamburger and putting on makeup, at least the driverless car is always attentive. And yes, statistically the driverless cars do perform better per mile, that headline though always has to be stirred up so people get talking about it.
