Montgomery, the communications coordinator for the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University
But steve dave, this isn't the politics board!
Is this that bad person that at the end of every halftime says "and I'm Joe Montgomery, voice of the pride of wildcat land" like anyone in the stadium gives a crap who he is?
like who really cares about this stuff
like who really cares about this stuff
If he wants to be a nut, that's fine, but I'd prefer if we'd lock our nuts away in the dank hallways of Waters & Eisenhower hall, as opposed to having them speak in front of 50,000 people on a weekly basis.

this is goEMAW
Why does everyone on here assume that some is :opcat: when they make a negative comment about someone who isn't white? Do honestly think Montgomery doesn't like him just because he's not white? I mean, it's definitely funny sometimes, but way overused.
I know, I know, I'll save you all time. I'm :opcat:
like who really cares about this stuff
Anyone who cares about the image of our state / school
Does employing Joe Montgomery hurt the image of our program? Unquestionably
eh, I'm sure lots of universities have professors who say really dumbass crap. I'm not embarrassed to be an EMAW because of this guy, it's just kinda :dubious:

No one knew this guy had a name until an hour ago. We're not having him showcase his bizarre political beliefs by saying "THE PRIIIIDE OF WILDCAT LAND!". He's introducing a marching band.

Romney's father was born and raised in Mexico, then forced back to the US as religious refugees during the depression by the Mexican Revolution . That's today's political history lesson. :)

There are plenty of other people that are part of this university/community that I think are complete dumbasses, and most of them are in more public positions than the guy who announces that the marching band is about ready to start their halftime show.

how many of them get national media attention for being a dumbass? you are focusing on what his role is as KState which is a pretty dumb thing to focus on. his role is enough to get him mentioned as working for KState when being written about as a loony. that's enough of a rough ridin' role.
Can I just boo the band because it's the band?

The birther issue is a race issue, there is no doubt about that. Mitt has an American mother and a father born in another country, sound familiar? Anyone asking to check his birth certificate?

this isn't a politics issue emaw4life, this is a university public image issueit will have no effect on our public image at all. sorry but no one outside of kansas will give a rip about this and very few people outside of Kansas have ever gave a rip about K-state anyways.

Well, you're an idiot if you think that. It's already made national media. Did the KS evolution humiliation make the state schools look like dogshit? What do you want the national media to think? that K-state is the greatest university ever? all anyone is gonna think out of this whole deal is "theres another crazy hayseed conservative in kansas that hates obama cause he's black and ruining this country." not "kstate is racist and hates obama"

Agreed. This is the do not embarrass KSU and alienate the majority of Americans from KSU thread.
hey everyone, america called and guess what.... they don't really give a crap.
Yeah, When you are drawing a govt. paycheck it's a good idea to keep your head down.no one is arguing this guy isnt all there mentally. but he really didnt do anything thats grounds for being fired.

i really dont care what happens to this guy. i dont care if kstate fires him or not. i just think you guys are over reacting. no one outside of kansas gives a damn about kansas state university. just like no one in kansas gives a damn about Syracuse or Penn State.

Which begs the question; What type of comments, opinions, actions of political nature are acceptable for a person in even a mildly public position at an institution of higher learning to make? Or should staunch political statements be avoided by all people in such positions?
Given the choice between the two, I guess I would choose the latter. An example would be the Nebraska Asst. Coach who denounced gay marriage publicly.
People already have a perception of Kansas in general is this going to change that? no

well in that case I rescind my dumbass comment, should've known you had something up your sleeve y-l-a :gocho:
I want a birth certificate proving Joe Montgomery was born in Wildcatland and both of his parents were born in Wildcatland before he is allowed to introduce The Pride of Wildcatland.

When Kansans make asses of themselves, be it on issues like this, or trying to shut down perfectly legal and essential Planned Parentood type businesses, or killing abortion doctors, it makes me glad that I moved to Missouri.
I travel for work and I always rock EMAW gear when traveling...I hate the fact that some people that do see :ksu: surely automatically think that I am one of those nutjobs. Having an actual nutjob at the center of something this Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) THAT IS ASSOCIATED IN ANY WAY WITH THE UNIVERSITY will probably force me to wear Royals gear my next travel day.
Also, it seems that most of the dissent in this thread (and the politics board one) are from people saying it doesn't matter because either people already look down at Kansas or that his job isn't important enough to make it matter. To address both in opposite order, his position is enough that when the national media brings this up they mention he works for the university. If you don't think it matters because you've given up worrying about the image of the state (fine) or the University (not fine, but your choice) then just step aside and let those of us that care continue to care and to work on doing something about this. I agree that KS is probably beyond repair, the evolution rulings in the state ruined KS for the nation and made it a laughinstock. But, Kansas State specifically hasn't been drug through the mud to the point of no repair. I'm not going to sit here and let it be without at least putting up a fight. If some crazy laughinstock is going to work for my alma mater and get national media attention for pushing his crazy crap through the legislature (citing his job at my alma mater) I'm going to at least say something about it and encourage others to do so as well.

"As for Mr. Obama's citizenship, there are many doubts," he said. "Doing the right thing can be hard and unpopular."
...
Montgomery, who works at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, said Obama hadn’t provided valid documentary evidence to establish his birth in the United States.
In Montgomery's written complaint, he declared "there is substantial evidence showing that much of Mr. Obama's alleged birth certificates have been forged or doctored, and have not been confirmed as legally valid, true and accurate."

:tucksinshirt:
As a former member of the POWL, this bothers me greatly. Joe Montgomery really has little interaction with the organization, he comes to Friday rehearsal, that's about it. Yet his extreme and misguided political views are now becoming a stain and distraction from the band. The band works very hard, and represents the university in a way that makes most K-Staters proud. Its an important part of the gameday experience, and they support the football team with tremendous enthusiasm. Now, unfortunately, when the band takes the field, anyone who follows the news will be distracted from what the 300 students are doing and will view the band in a negative light.
Also, these types of things are unfortunate for reasonable people who are not Obama supporters, but not foolish enough to believe he wasn't born in the USA. I don't like that a loud, vocal minority, paints all political conservatives to be irrational fools.
I hope for the sake of the band that Joe is relieved of his position. It is drawing too much negative attention.
Joe is entitled to his opinion, and if he wants to do crazy things he is free do so, I support the 1st amendment of course, I just wish he wouldn't represent things I love dearly (KSU, and specifically the band) while being a crazy kook.

Yes, but that's not going to happen.

I don't agree with him, but he certainly hasn't done anything wrong.
Butthurts gonna butthurt, I guess.
UPDATE: 5:52 p.m. -- The all-Republican Objections Board voted unanimously on Thursday afternoon to delay a final decision on Obama's eligibility for the state's ballot until a meeting Monday, pending either documentation on the president's citizenship from Hawaii officials or the presence of the Obama campaign.
According to tweets from the meeting, Kobach proposed that the board meet again Monday to discuss Obama's citizenship and look into receiving more documentation. Board members expressed concern that Obama's campaign did not attend the hearing, instead submitting a letter defending the president and saying he is eligible for the ballot in Kansas. State Democratic Party spokesman Dakota Loomis told HuffPost earlier Thursday that Democrats would not be attending the hearing, which he dismissed as "fictitious and baseless."
Joe Montgomery, the Kansas State University employee who brought the objection, attended the hearing. Tweets from meeting attendees indicated that the entire board had concerns about Obama's campaign not attending.

If the panel of 3 retards that this jackass presented his testimony to decide to not put Obama's name on the ballot in Kansas, this will become world news. It's incredibly embarrassing regardless.
in kansas, there is really no point to putting obama on the ballot
I haven't seen anything about this guy on any national media website.
In fact, I haven't seen anything about this anywhere but goEMAW.
Maybe this has more to do with your own political opinions than about the "good name" of the university.
Feel free to PI me now :D

Yes, but that's not going to happen.
The guy has his opinion, took the time to research it, and presented it to the "people in charge"
I don't agree with him, but he certainly hasn't done anything wrong.
Butthurts gonna butthurt, I guess.

I just now stumbled into this thread. I'm sincerely glad there are individuals who care enough about the image of our university to understand why this is a big issue and needed to be addressed. Those of you who couldn't care less, you're the equivalent of a KU t-shirt fans, and you make me sick.

No I did not. Looking at his site, though, it seems he is not a creationist, but a religious guy who believes in evolution. That's not embarrassing at all.
People who think the earth is only a few thousand years old should not be teaching geography at any level, though. Let alone a professor at a university.

Keith Miller isn't "Director of Communications" for anything, dumbass. Keith Miller doesn't routinely address 50,000 people and call himself, by name, the "voice" of anything K-State related, dumbass. Keith Miller doesn't start off every football game with a patriotic circle jerk called the "Ceremony of Allegiance" while simultaneously expending maximum effort to get the commander-in-chief wiped off the ballot.
You think you're onto something with this. You're not.

Yeah, FP is ruining things right now. We should all be high fiving. LOL @ Joe Montgomery getting canned from doing football games. That makes him the SECOND K-State football PA guy who has been canned for a hilarious reason. (1,000 goEMAW Olive Garden points to the poster who can name the first one and why he was canned.)

How long until he is on the O'reilly Factor?
I have received numerous e-mails tonight concerning the attempt by Joe Montgomery (band announcer) to have the Kansas Presidential Election Commission remove President Obama from the ballot because of that "Citizenship" issue. It has brought a spotlight on to the band that is certainly unwarranted and foolish. I have spoken with Joe and we both agree it is in his best interests and the best interest of the band to part ways. He will no longer announce for the band.
Thanks for your support.

Well if we would just look at the research...from that standpoint alone and from the facts of Obama's past, it's actually a valid concern.
So I guess I'll be hearing about Keith Brady Miller stepping down too?

I have no sense of remorse over the guy who announces the most annoying parts of the game day experience.
I have wanted that stupid ceremony of allegiance removed for as long as I can remember. Also, I have never watched a KSU half-time, and I've been going to games since 1993.
Maybe Joe did us a favor, and they'll go ahead and axe that stupid ceremony?
I think they should pick a kid from a MHS grade school each week to sing the national anthem. Would be adorable. Then, right into the jumbo tron and Willie skit. BOOM. Perfect game day intro.

I guess I have no clue if Joe is racist or not but the act of him doing this alone is not a sign he is racist. I don't like Hard-Cor Kanye West because of his music, does that make me racist?

Guys, let me raise a practical question at this point. What kind of Friday do you think Joe Montgomery is having? I mean, in the last 36 hours or so he has A) become a bit of a flash-in-the-pan for being a complete fool, B) abruptly lost a job he's held for nearly two decades, and C) had his embarrassing YouTubes outed in public forums goEMAW and GPC. Do you think he even went to work today? If he did, how awkward are things around that office? How many voicemails and emails did he have waiting on him this morning to ruin his day?

I may despise the man's political views, but he has the right to have them.
A lot of men have fought and died on foreign soil so that Mr. Montgomery can make an ass out of himself. We shouldn't disrespect those men and the Constitution by denying him his right to free speech and political views.

I agree 100%, although I'm not sure if a public institution can fire someone for expressing their political views as easily as a private institution.

This.
No matter your views or affiliation, our country is $16 trillion in debt and counting. Republicans blame it on Democrats. Democrats blame it on Republicans. Nothing gets done. But we are worried about a man, who has been president for 4 years, being a natural born citizen - and if the man challenging this will be announcing our marching band routine. Meanwhile, congress is pushing off passing a budget for the 1,000+ straight day. We have larger problems than Mr. Montgomery. Let K-State figure it out. They can make a decision, unlike our elected officials in Washington.
Normally I don't react to political comments, but this one deserves a mention and a "+1".
To me, the biggest problem with politics our country is not the elephants or the donkeys, it is the idea that one side is actually right and one side is actually wrong. You can agree with one party's ideals or the other party's ideals, but you can't tell me that buying into each party's "vote our party without question" is a good idea. The parties want us doing that because as long as we're focused on "it's Bush's/Obama's" fault, we're not asking why the hell our guy isn't getting anything done.
I bet he feels great today. He has already said that he understands this is a difficult thing to do. He believes he is being persecuted and that strengthens his conviction.
On second thought, maybe I should've gone to law school. Good Grief!Quotekcatty.com

He can't be fired just for this unless he misused university resources.

Listen John Adams, he hasn't been fired from crap. He has been refused the chance to perform a volunteer activity.

I may despise the man's political views, but he has the right to have them.
A lot of men have fought and died on foreign soil so that Mr. Montgomery can make an ass out of himself. We shouldn't disrespect those men and the Constitution by denying him his right to free speech and political views.

I agree 100%, although I'm not sure if a public institution can fire someone for expressing their political views as easily as a private institution.

yes he can stormnut, though that has nothing to do with what kk is saying. I don't know what part of that link you posted makes you think otherwise.

By 1967, however, the Court would note that "the major premise of Adler has been rejected." In its place was a new premise: that the government ought not to be able to do indirectly what it cannot do directly. The Court took the position that public employment cannot be conditioned on a surrender of constitutional rights. The problem for the Court then became how to balance the government's interest in maintaining an efficient public workplace against the individual employee's interest in free expression.
Pickering v Board of Education considered the case of a public school teacher fired for writing a letter to a newspaper critical of the local school board. In ordering the teacher reinstated, the Court found that a public employee's statements on a matter of public concern could not be the basis for discharge unless the statement contained knowing or reckless falsehoods, or the statements were of the sort to cause a substantial interference with the ability of the employee to continue to do his job.
Mt. Healthy v Doyle also involved a fired school teacher. Doyle lost his job after calling a radio station disc jockey to complain about a memo sent to school teachers concerning a new teacher dress code. Because Doyle had given the district other reasons for terminating him (such as giving "the finger" to two students), the Court remanded the case for a determination as to whether Doyle would have been fired even if he hadn't engaged in the protected expressive activity of calling the radio station. If he would have been fired anyway, the termination could stand, the Court said.
Good lord stormy, this "job" isn't what he's "hired" to do. Whether he used university resources is irrelevant. His 8 saturdays a year gig does not entitle him to due process rights or free speech rights. He serves at the pleasure of the band director/AD. If this was him being removed at his faculty position there would be due process rights and whether he used company time would be relevant.

I was told that he would NOT be behind the mic or at the game this weekend. Anybody else hearing this?
I can tell just from reading this post that you are a kstatefans'r at heart.
Is that one of the older MB's?
Yeah and everyone there always wants to feel really in the know by saying things like "anybody hearing this?" and "I'm hearing..." But to answer your question, yes. He's done announcing the band.

Montgomery told The Huffington Post Friday afternoon that public reaction to the complaint led him to decide against continuing. He declined to say exactly what was said in the calls and emails he received, but indicated that people who knew him both personally and professionally were also contacted about the complaint.
"I didn't file this objection with the desire to involve anyone else. This is me expressing myself on a personal political level," he said. "I would appreciate it if people would not call anyone associated with me, whether a personal or professional association."

Good job from saving Kansas from further embarrassment, goEMAW.com
Glad this over.

don't worry EMAMFW skinnybenny is quick to highlight any k-statefans type activity here because he thinks he's finally lost its scent from his clothing. but he hasn't, oh no, he hasn't.

Montgomery, who works at Kansas State University, filed the objection Monday, claiming Obama was not a "natural born citizen" because his father was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Kenya, and that U.S. citizenship is conferred "primarily" through the father. He also said that Obama has not shown "valid, certified documentary evidence" of being born in the United States.
I love the "band is hot." :embarrassed:

so do I Pete. so do I.
FYI guys, auditions for the announcer position start next Monday, per HMBDDFT. I'd love to see a goEMAWer take the position.

Nope. Def not a creationist.

How was new guy? Did they still do the Ceremony of Allegiance?

Dumbass, note the bolded words. I don't know why or how you singled out Keith Miller, but he is not a creationist, he supports evolution. When he says creation is designed by God he means indirectly through evolution. He even did a public talk years ago for Individuals for Freethought (an atheist/skeptic student group at K-State) when the nonsense first went down about removing evolution from the Kansas science standards.
Sorry to be somewhat OT but as someone who has met and talked with Miller about his views, I felt I had to chime in.
Oh, and nice work EMAWs on getting this racist wingnut Joe Montgomery "fired," wish we could've done it before the media started associating his name with K-State.
video removed.HOLY crap.
So I originally was going to post some lame joke about "I wonder if Joe is just mad that I mocked him in the K-State0 song." Really I just wanted everyone to have a LOL at this part again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTe8BBOefOY&t=2m58s
Then I noticed the comment underneath it.
Have fun.

He can remove his video from Youtube, but Return to Kenya will never be removed from my memory. It's just too catchy and hate-filled at the same time.

lol what? Seriously? I didn't want him fired before. Removing his voice from the Bill on Saturdays was good enough. But now I'll volunteer to deliver his pink slip
