not a mac

also, given cord trip debacle 2010 if there is one that has one of those cords that don't break the computer when someone trips on it that would be great.

The 160BGB Solid State drive would be awesome, but they are charging $410 for it, which is kinda pricy.  Think of it like a giant USB flash drive for your hard drive, so instead of a slower hard drive with moving parts, this is much faster, quieter and won't break (probably)

I bought this for $800 last year, and it's great. The battery lasts about 8 hours if you use the energy-saving GPU. Saul's computer would be better for gaming, though.

What kinda games are you looking to play, Steve Dave?

I'd suggest getting a Steam account if you don't have one.  Don't have to mess with having CD/DVD's for games to lug around. Digital distribution, social features, and tons of good sales on games.

Well, the 14" one does not have the new processors.

The 17" ones do.  The 17" falls out of your initial specification range.

Yeah, the 14" also uses the older graphics card.

IMO - it's not a bad laptop at all, and it will be fast enough for what you will be doing (presumably nothing taxing).  If you answered my gaming question (YOU COULD PM TO SAVE NERDFACE), I could better evaluate your situation.

But, it's not a good value.  For that price, you shouldn't have to pay for the older technology.

Woot has been selling some refurbished HP's for real cheap.  I got a 15" for $179.  Has something like 3meg mem, 60 gig hd, dvdrw/cdrw, 2.2mhz processor.  It isn't by far the best you can buy, but if you are just doing spreadsheets and such, it is fantastic.

Bought mine 3 weeks ago, but have seen it for $199 three times since.

Be super cool and get the Samsung 9 Series. Look out for laptops with the flawed Sandy Bridge chipsets.  :ohno:

b) wut?  :ohno:

Not exactly your specs, but you'll be the coolest kid on the block and that's all that really matters (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP900X3A-A03US)

Lots of laptops being replaced (http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/01/intel-sandy-bridge-chipset-flaw-identified-as-a-rogue-transistor/)  :runaway:

HP's high end workstation laptops. From HP, they're out of your price range. You may be able to find one close though. The "dreamcolor" option has an IPS screen. It's gorgeous. The machine itself is probably too expensive and powerful for what you need though.

But they are overpriced and can't do anything a PC can do, so why bother

is there any reason to have a blue ray player if I don't ever watch movies?  will that be utilized for anything else within the next 3 years?
People will mock you for not having a blu ray player in your laptop.  If you can handle that I think you'd be ok without it.  I don't see software being produced on blu-ray in the next 3 years.

my sony has a blueray player.  has played zero bluerays in the 2.5 years I've had it.

Saul, do research on Sonys that are available to purchase at Best Buy so that if you tell me my current one is FUBAR, I can go buy a new one real quick and you can set it up.  T-Y, Trim

Does your laptop have an HDMI out? That's the easiest way to connect it to your tv. Then you can just shove in your tv storage, or where ever. Get something like http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Multimedia-Remote-with-Keyboard/dp/B0036VO67I or http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011FOOI2/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0036VO67I&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0JWY8Q0ZF6PP2MRBRTHG to control it.

Done. Some cool software is available for HTPC use. Check out Boxee, Hulu desktop, BeyondTV, and even windows media center is pretty good.

My laptop has a 14" screen and only displays at 1366x768, and it hasn't bothered me a bit. I have a nice monitor for my desktop, and my laptop usually just gets used for web surfing. Really though, it plays games just fine, at a higher resolution than an Xbox 360 or PS3 does. I guess if I didn't have a nice desktop, the screen resolution on my laptop would be more important, but to me, a laptop that is thinner than a quarter, plays modern games, and costs less than $1,000 seems like a good deal.

I will agree that buying a blu ray drive with a screen that displays less than 1080p is just Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!), though.

You are not going to see every pixel on a 15" 1366x768 screen, that is just beyond Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) to say. If that was the case, you could see pixels on a 32" 720p TV from about 30 feet.

No, you are beyond Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!). Comparing a 15" screen that is a foot in front of your face to a 32" tv that is 30' away? Are you rough ridin' serious? You're gonna get a eff ton of jaggies on a shitty screen like a 1366x768. People arguing against this have very obviously not used a good screen. There is no going back to a phone resolution on a laptop.

16" with 1920x1200? Yeah that will be a big difference going down to any other resolution. IMO the sweet spot is 1600x900 for smaller/portable laptops, because my work lappy is 1920x1200 15" and everything is so damn small on it.

You're going to hate every minute of it. 1600x900 is the lowest I'd go on a 15-16". Unfortunately, almost all the ones that include a higher resolution are business or professional laptops (ie, not that attractive). I think some Sonys have higher res screens, but isn't that what you have now?

Didn't know that's how it is pronounced.  Learn something new every day.  My mother just picked up an Asus, seems pretty decent.  kinda big though, quite a bit bigger than my Dell.  It does have a 10 key though, which mine doesn't have and I miss.

ASUS did not used to make laptops and monitors and whatnot.  I bought their motherboards back in the day.  The P4PE was rock solid.

ASUS has made laptops for sometime. They just sold them to other companies for rebranding. Hell, macbooks used to be made by ASUS. I have had about 4 ASUS motherboards. K8N-DL was my favorite.

Please recommend computers that are cheap and would fill all those needs.

-screw around in word or excel every once in a while

Please recommend computers that are cheap and would fill all those needs.

TIA

do you use actual photoshop or mspaint?

Good point, its ms paint

Any PC on the market will suit your needs just fine. You should just go with whatever's cheapest if that's all you really want to use your PC for, and you don't care about how sleek it looks, what it weighs, battery life, etc.

Right now all my files are organized in foobar2000. Really considering a chromebook but the indexing of these files worries me. Thinking about this one instead so I can keep my system going:

I'm sure it's great. But I mean this thing is going to mostly be used for watching viral videos on facebook and playing on Pottermore.

Not, like, to a cheap ass like rusty. To a guy who will use it for what he uses it for like rusty.

Anyone have a surface pro? Reviews?

About 75% of my computer usage could be done on a tablet(Surfing the web) but that other 25%(Actually typing stuff) really needs a keyboard.

You can draw on the screen, and it has a USB.  I say go for it.

Surface Pro, and Surface Pro 2 all had weird issues. 3rd one is better I believe.

I have a surface, and I use it for work and everything else. I have a real keyboard I plug in when I need to type, but I'm using the soft little case keyboard right now. It takes a little getting used to, but I like it better than any laptop.
