« on: March 25, 2011, 08:15:20 AM »
getting a new laptop.  know jack crap about buying one as i normally just goes to the sony website and order one.  things I want:

not a mac
14-16 inch screen
decent for games but doesn't have to be great (would prefer one of those switching GPU things or whatever for battery life)
looks cool
sandy bridge processor
costs less than $1,500

GO!

also, given cord trip debacle 2010 if there is one that has one of those cords that don't break the computer when someone trips on it that would be great.

The 160BGB Solid State drive would be awesome, but they are charging $410 for it, which is kinda pricy.  Think of it like a giant USB flash drive for your hard drive, so instead of a slower hard drive with moving parts, this is much faster, quieter and won't break (probably)

Its utilitarian. HP isn't known for making the best looking laptops, but they aren't ugly.  Dell, Gateway....ugly.

I bought this for $800 last year, and it's great. The battery lasts about 8 hours if you use the energy-saving GPU. Saul's computer would be better for gaming, though.

What kinda games are you looking to play, Steve Dave?

I'd suggest getting a Steam account if you don't have one.  Don't have to mess with having CD/DVD's for games to lug around. Digital distribution, social features, and tons of good sales on games.

He seems like the kind of guy that would need to carry around a usb mini-mouse in his laptop case because "he doesn't like the trackpad"

true.   And a pack of alcohol wipes to clean the keyboard.

BTW good luck using that 16" lappy on a crappy airplane tray table.
