I've been running some math on all this as we look into the future.

PAC 12 adds OU/OSU/TX/Tech to get to 16. (Not a prediction, just taking one scenario regarding possible school placement for the sake of doing the math.)

SEC 13 adds Mizzou, WVU, and Va Tech to get to 16.

Big One-Gee adds ND, Pitt, Syracuse, and Boston College to get to 16.

One superconference spot left to fill, 16 slots.

ACC has lost 2 of its teams to other conferences, leaving 10.

Big East has lost 3 of its teams to other conferences, leaving 6.

They merge, that's 16 teams, leaving out KU, KSU, ISU, and Baylor.

It may be in our best interest to get into the Big East now, rather than "promoting" other schools to the BCS that could then wind up being additional competitors for Top 64 slots down the road.

I would bet a large sum of money that all ACC teams stay put.

They won't have anywhere else to go.

The Pac won't expand if they don't take Texas.  OU isn't enough.  If getting OU means needing to add any other school west of the Mississippi not named Texas, it's pretty inconceivable that they will have enough value-add to overcome that tipping point where you start losing revenue for other members.

I think word is leaking that they'll still expand anyway to try and put the clamps on Texas.

I mean, OU/OSU/KU and...Missouri?  Pffft.  Missouri would rather join the SEC than the Pac.  KU is desperate enough.  Missouri isn't going to join the Pac.  Then it becomes who?  Us?

Yeah, the Pac expanding to take OU/OSU, KU/KSU would be the blockbuster Larry Scott has been waiting for and biding his time.

If Larry Scott's grand plan to expand to sixteen culminates in Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, KU and anyone not named Texas west of the Mississippi, he may end up in a ravine somewhere.  That would be an enormous strikeout, and there is absolutely no way the CEO's would go for it.

The only way the Pac 16 forms is with Texas.  No Texas, no Pac.  They'll perpetuate the myth that OU/OSU will go without to get Texas on board, but they won't.

That's why this OU/UT pissing match is a waste of time.  Texas can't keep the Big 12 viable without OU, and OU can't bolt for the Pac without UT.  It's a cold war, but neither of them really have nukes.  They just keep saying they do.

It's not really that surprising when you think about it. The schools don't want to lose their in-state rivalries (especially Duke-North Carolina). I'm sure Florida State and Clemson would leave in a heartbeat, but Florida and South Carolina won't allow it.

What's really going to be funny is when the Big 12 doesn't really break apart, solidifies, and takes a couple of additional schools to get back to 12.  The conference holding the bag will be the SEC, who expanded to an unworkable number for A&M and West Virginia.

Think about it...the last two conferences to expand, the Pac and SEC, will have expanded to get Colorado/Utah and A&M/WVU.

Granted, the Pac got good money for it, but really, that's probably more of a function of them having their rights up at a very opportune time more than the two schools they actually picked up.  The SEC can't even re-negotiate their rights for a while, so everyone is going to take a cut to add two schools that probably don't really move their marker all that much.  I mean A&M may actually be worth their cut, but the aggregate will probably be less because WVU won't.

This is why realignment is stupid.
