trying to educate myself real quick on wikipedia
looks like the term "Metal" casts a really wide net.
this is going to be CONTROVERSIAL

When Metalhead and I discussed this, that was a major issue. We'll see what he has to say!
-
is "and justice for all" metal? because i would say that album and band changed metal and you guys know what that means...
-
Slipknot will probably be just outside the top ten.
Stevesie, Puni, RD you all have valid points.
-
JESUS CHRIST! :buh-bye:

does cannibal corpse have 1-5 wrapped up or is there an opening?

see! that's the way you do it! somebody names something you don't agree with? "sorry, just missed the top ten." that's pro stuff right there metalhead.
-

some may disagree with the efficiency of these research methods, but I'm going with bands first, in alphabetical order, and then their albums, in chronological order. So I started with Amon Amarth Once Sent from the Golden Hall and I'll work my way through from there. Cannibal Corpse stands a solid chance, though.

i think BFMV may be the most underrated band like ever. i mean why doesn't everybody love them?
-
i guess because they have a god-awful name for a band
-
i guess because they have a god-awful name for a band
yeah, don't think i've listened to any of their music because it sounds like maybe the name of a band stevesie would have in his top 10? maybe i'll try it

mocat you forgot vulgar display of power somehow. i know it was an accident so no harm no foul

-
a7x is amazing. i have seen them twice
-
i saw A7X in Lawrence in early '06 and caught The Rev's drumstick! then he died later

Deftones are incredible live. I held Chino up one time while he screamed his soul out. When is this concert? I thought OKC was the closest they were coming.

i am going to add All Hope is Gone to my HM list. very good, very good.
-
so many nu-metal fans. not my cup of tea, sorry folks. you won't see any nu-metal on my list.
-
mocat you forgot vulgar display of power somehow. i know it was an accident so no harm no foul
ok i just did a quick run-through and i forgot that Hollow was on there. That is my favorite pantera song by far, so VDoP is now an official HM
-
this love is the only pantera song i like.
-
a fun DYK: in high school i worked at the arcade in the topeka mall, and i was working one night and there was a bag left on a bench outside the store. i let it sit there for like 2 hours and decided no one was going to pick it up, so i went and snatched it and VDoP was in the bag. this is the only reason i have VDoP on cd while i don't really like pantera.
-
Omaha on the 22nd. This will be the 3rd time for the deftones.
-
i saw deftones + linkin park + limp bizkit + metallica in stl in 03
-
sounds like a good time wiley
-
i saw deftones + linkin park + limp bizkit + metallica in stl in 03
my god....
-
do the deftones get lumped in with nu-metal? if so, i think they're the only nu-metal band i like
-
mocat you forgot vulgar display of power somehow. i know it was an accident so no harm no foul
ok i just did a quick run-through and i forgot that Hollow was on there. That is my favorite pantera song by far, so VDoP is now an official HM
:eye: Walk is my favorite pantera song by a narrow margin so i'm glad to see it in your honorable mentions list.
-
i'm going to do a nu-metal top 10 since metalhead's is going to be all old school crappy metal
-
Will be interested to see where Jethro Tull ends up.
-
i'm going to do a nu-metal top 10 since metalhead's is going to be all old school crappy metal
i don't know that i really consider nu-metal a subgenre of metal, i kinda think of them separately? :dunno:
-
nu-metal was like 5 years of absolute garbage music in the early 2000s, but on the bright side there were a few good songs/albums to come out of there.
disturbed
slipknot
godsmack
system of a down
drowning pool
etc.
-
pantera never really did it for me. too much dead weight. if there was a pantera best-of album i would probably include it as an HM
a young rick daris and a young limestone used to listen to pantera on the way to get ppan pizzas and mountain waters at aggieville p-hut in highschool.

nu-metal is the best metal.
-
the thing about nu-metal is, anybody in the world can play guitar in a nu-metal band. just drop that crap into drop C and put your middle finger across the lower three strings and move around for about 2 minutes and 58 seconds and you've got yourself a catchy nu-metal track
-
i saw deftones + bad religion + nofx + bosstones + pennywise + DHC + 22 jacks + no use for a name + bouncing souls + decendents + mad caddies + aquabats + hepcat + rancid + mxpx in lawrence in 1998.
:comeatme:
-
man, what was that? sort of like a warped tour for nu-metal'rs?
-
I would nominate Raining Blood as a top ten song
however
Reign in Blood has too much uncomfortable nazi stuff for me to nominate it as an album.
-
yeah, not a slayer fan
-
I went to mayhem fest and saw slayer. Yeah...not a fan. Woulsve been cool to see pantera

so, saying that nu-metal is garbage is too much? we just can't even acknowledge that it ever existed?

fwiw: tay definitely isn't listening to any of the crap you listed as a top 10 in that gif.
-
What's Norma Jean, The Chariot, and old Atreyu considered? Because it's nothing like Slipknot and the other nu-metal examples that you guys are giving.
-
atreyu is like founding father of nu-metal. can't speak to the other ones you listed
-

If you are gonna do a top 10 metal thread, you might as well include all declared forms of metal so you can spot all the dweebs who listened to avenge sevenfold.

Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses will definitely be in my top 10
-
atreyu is like founding father of nu-metal. can't speak to the other ones you listed
Well, Slipknot's first album came out in 1999 and Atreyu's first album came out in 2002, so that can't be true.
-
this feels like a safe place to admit I love rammstein and would nominate it into a top ten list
is it metal?

oh my god george washington was born in 1732 and thomas jefferson was born in 1743 so they both definitely can't be founding fathers i guess

oh man, saw rammstein on the '98 family values tour (orgy, rammstein, ice cube, limp bizkit and korn, are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?! :excited:) and they were really rough ridin' awesome. the lead singer ripped off his cod piece and had a giant dildo hanging out and started jerking it off and then when he uh... finished he it started spraying stuff all over the crowd from the dildo. found out later it was spraying out peppermint shnapps!

Oh man, went through a huge metal phase in high school. It started when I got a Victory Records cd sampler with the purchase of a (probably Taking Back Sunday) cd, and it had "Mordecai" by Between The Buried and Me on it. At first I was like "omg wtf is this" and by the end of the song I was all (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.fjcdn.com%2Fgifs%2FPraise_f5e992_796049.gif&hash=728de80ba904d3071d3854787b9db911a11451db). BTBAM just kicks so much ass. I don't think "Alaska" left the cd player of my mini van for like, 2 years.
-
Most people in this thread don't have a god damn clue what metal is.
Deafheaven is a pretty good record from this yr, fwiw.
-
Red Hot Chili Peppers
-
I listen to metal when I'm at the gym. Really gets the blood pumping you know. That's about all I can contribute here. Metalhead, any good suggestos on some newer songs that can help me get through deadlifts.

This is a great anecdote and addition to this thread. Selkies did it for me. Have you seen Colors live? Wow

I was just listening to that earlier! And the jazz solo in selkies is my favorite thing in the world.

got the inside track on this list tonight, and folks, if you have a hat on you might want to hold on to it.
cause it's a doozy.
-
Generally I don't like top 10 metal lists unless they're sub-genre specific. Are you analyzing albums in terms of how they hold up today? Are you giving consideration to the influence they had on future bands/albums? Either way, it's really hard to say album x is "better" than album y. Then you have fans, specifically of metal, who have issues with whether or not album z is even metal in the first place, due to there not being a clear line between metal and hard rock or whatever.
Most top 10 all time lists are full of Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Slayer, and Metallica, with multiple albums from these bands in the top 10/15, which just seems masturbatory to me. Yeah, those bands made some great and influential music, but really, did any of their albums do anything earth-shattering that their other albums didn't touch on? Definitely needs to be a rule for not including the same band more than once unless you can point to two or more of their albums and see them as being truly unique.
Quite the task you've put upon yourself, Metalhead :runaway:
-
Quite the post bro but justice and puppets are both top 10, sorry

While I disagree with your opinion, I respect it. Personally, while Blackened is probably my favorite Metallica song, I find Justice to be less complete than a top 10 album should be. I think Ride the Lightning has a stronger case.

Escape and trapped under ice are on lightning so that brings it down a peg or two
umm, no.
-
You're right
-
Justice is better song for song imo, but both are great
-
The loss of Cliff Burton really adds a palpable animus to AJFA. I say "One" alone elevates AJFA past the rest. Great music vid, too.
-
Yeah they just had about 12 or 13 thousand guitar tracks on every song on justice instead of a bass
-
The bass that's there is following the riffs so you can't pick it out at all. Apparently Cliff had the parts for it down mentally so Jason just had to kind of come in and throw something together since there was no recording of it. Would love to hear how it could have sounded.
-
Puppets has to be in the top 3 or it's not a valid list. At least one Lamb of God album must make the top 10 too. The other eight will be interesting to see. As mentioned above there are so many types of metal that it's hard to rank. Hats off to metalhead for taking on this enormous task.
-
Good stuff pike I'm with you on puppets and LOG. Did you see my list? Wow
-
Since I don't think it was mentioned yet, I'll submit that Megadeth's Rust in Peace is top 10 material and is really solid top to bottom. Marty Friedman really elevated that band, as did Mustaine getting clean for the recording process.

there will be zero megadeth on this list. eff that band and eff dave mustaine.
-
Mustaine is a nut and seems like a major douche, but I don't see why that's relevant. Oh well, your list
-
Mustaine's voice is unbearable imo. Also megadeth has absolutely garbage drumming

Lateralus is better than Opiate, imo. However, also imo, I don't consider Tool to be "metal".
Will any Slayer or Ronnie James Dio albums make an appearance :surprised:

i'm not sure "alternative" is what we're looking for (at least as it is commonly used) but i definitely wouldn't call it "metal" either. is "hard alt prog rock" a category?

I believe that the established test for genres is whether or not it is listed on a label in a Hastings store. If we apply this test, then no, no it is not...

Tool is suing Smile Empty for sounding identical to them. "[Smile Empty Soul]'s debut album sounds exactly like 'Aenima', from the first track to the last track. Ask our fans, no one sounds like us. No one." says one of their members.
So our team did some research. It turns out Tool was correct in their assessment. When we compared the first song of each album to each other, our findings were irrefutable. It was the exact same song. Then we had our researchers study the second song on each album. You'll never believe what they found.
"They were the same, too" one researcher says. "As were the third song, the fourth song, and so forth".
We're not taking sides in this case. We're just saying don't be surprised if Tool has a lot more money after all of this is presented in court.

Remember, stevesie is the same guy that thought some pop-punk band from the early 2000s was the first to layer different vocal parts or something like that. We can't expect him to appreciate Tool.
-
"Nickelback is great! You obviously just don't know enough about music to get it!"
-
Tool makes complex music for intelligent individuals. They are their own genre and imo one of the greatest bands of all time. From deep philosophical and spiritual lyrics to Danny Carey simultaneously using 2 or 3 conflicting rhythms on drums to their amazing visual arts/videos (incorporating Alex Grey's psychedelic artwork) to their insane live shows, make Tool so great and add to their mystique.
-
i mean stevesie is doing great with trolling here, but that doesn't mean it didn't feel awesome coming up with hilarious ways that stevesie is stupid and can't tell the difference between obviously different stuff IRL
-
sadly, i don't know for sure that stevesie is trolling :frown:
maybe he has no ears and has been faking anything related to music. would really shed some light on his list.

It would kind of ruin the thread if I revealed whether or not I was trolling, no? Regardless, a big lol to ERII writing a paragraph about Tool being great thinking me (or anyone) was going to read it.

Hey guys, I'm back with some great news! I was showing my friend the new awesome Trust Company album. I showed him the first song and he asked, "Stevesie, was that Tool?" and I said, "no friend, that was Trust Company!" He muttered, "huh" and we went back to listening. I showed him the second song and he said, "now Stevesie, that was DEFINITELY Tool, wasn't it?" and I said once again, "no friend, that was Trust Company." So I showed him the third song and he said, "Stevesie you have to be pulling my leg, this is Tool!" and I told him, "wrong again, friend. Trust Company!" So I go on to show him the fourth song and he says, well you guessed it, he thought it was Tool yet another time! And that's where I'll end my story because I think it's quite clear what my point is.

POST THE LIST, METALHEAD!
-
The list better have Converge "Jane Doe" and Botch "We are the Romans"
Yes I know they aren't "metal" but more of a hardcore-hybrid, but when it comes to heavy music those 2 are the best
-
this feels like a safe place to admit I love rammstein and would nominate it into a top ten list
is it metal?
oh man, saw rammstein on the '98 family values tour (orgy, rammstein, ice cube, limp bizkit and korn, are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!
Saw Rammstien with Slipknot and System of a Down in 2001. Abe's friend got backstage passes because he was on a street team (omg remember street teams?!?). We ate salmon with Clown from Slipknot and then watched Rammstein from the side of the stage. Right after they got done they went into their dressing room with six 6'2", blonde, blue eyed German girls.
Also of note, Serj from SOAD had his own dressing room that said a huge sign on the door "NOBODY ALLOWED IN UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY SERJ". Abe took a peek while nobody was around. Nothing but pillows, candles, and a huge plate of cocaine.
-
I was on so many Street teams! I sold the stuff on eBay instead of passing it out tho :shy:

Just look at the picture above. Who looks more heavy metal to you? Well, apparently you were not a member of the Recording Academy circa 1988. The first instance of a category for Hard Rock/Metal, the award was given to the flute-tastic Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave over Metallica's And Justice For All. Fans (and even some audience members) were rightly outraged, though Tull's record label tried to make light of the faux pas by placing a Billboard ad that read, "The flute is a heavy, metal instrument." When Metallica later won a Grammy for 1991's Metallica, they thanked Jethro Tull for not release a competing album.

I encourage everyone to just go listen to 2:58-5:45 of "Ashes of the Wake" from Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God

Is this suppose to be particularly impressive or heavy or something? While not exactly terrible, it certainly didn't melt my face off or anything.

When will this rough ridin' list ever to happen? :cactus:

2. Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
3. Immolation - Here in After
4. Slayer - Reign in Blood

I wouldn't go but your tastes are much different than mine.
They are more or less ripping off early to mid 90's Bathory and just putting it in a slick, over-produced format. I guess what I'm saying is that they are ok but not on my must see list.

I watched Metallica's Through the Never today. The concert footage is pretty cool. They've added some really awesome effects since I saw them close to a decade ago. The separate movie portion doesn't make any sense, but there are some cool scenes I guess. It would probably be awesome to watch with PED's.
-
Hey bud, maybe you shouldn't post in this thread until you get your list done, okay?

Hey bud, maybe you shouldn't post in this thread until you get your list done, okay?
The list has been done for a while, I just haven't felt like writing a blog post to go with it. Anyway, I'll post the list just for you.
Here is my list of my ten favorite metal albums. It is important to note, that this is only a list of my ten favorite metal albums, not a list of the ten "greatest metal albums of all time". There are a lot of bands that I listen to on a regular basis that didn't make it on the list, simply because they don't put out complete/ entire albums that I enjoy (Iron Maiden, Motorhead, High on Fire, Slayer, Sepultura and Weedeater, to name a few).
10.) Black Sabbath’s Paranoid

I remember trying to force myself to like St. Anger after I walked up-hill both ways to Hastings to buy it. "Oh, no Kirk solos? Well that's... I guess they're trying to do something..different..." St. Anger made me fall out of love with MetallicA.

I don't either. I mean I guess they have some stuff that probably qualifies. Generally, if the song is pleasant to listen to in any way whatsoever, it's probably not metal.

Paganism, for me.

That was the first Metallica album I bought with my own money. I've got a bit of an attachment do it due to that, but even I know it should be last. His reasoning for putting it above DM is a crock of crap too.

Reload is easily better than load. LML is what inspired me to learn the bag.
-
i did enjoy this bit tho:
#1 Master of Puppets
I guess it's obvious by now but this is a no brainer. A friend of mind once told me that he owned this album for months before he listened past the first track. He was afraid the other songs weren't going to be as good as "Battery." Fortunately, he was an idiot.

generally it's because people can't get it through their thick skulls that load and reload weren't metal albums. I really like reload. fixxxer was a favorite tune of young mh and his junior high buds, and might have been the track playing during the opening credits of a stop-action lego movie they made.

I'm not an expert on Metallica by any stretch. In fact I had to youtube half the songs he was talking about as he went through the list. The writer was spot on with the NWOBHM style early, and basically everything he said that I saw. Agreed with laughing at people who say they sold out on the self-titled, and the grunge comments as well.
Their are few things worse than "fans" bemoaning the evolution of a musician(s).

I'm actually at my parent's house tonight. I'll see if I have it. One of the other guys might have ended up with it, though. We were really into Kung Pow! at the time, so there might even be some extra scenes with the camera focused on a muted TV, playing kung fu movies while we dub them over with our own dialogue.
eff, I had completely forgot about all of that until earlier today.
-
I recently read a philosophy book that talks about metal. Would you guys say your fav. metal bands draw more from satanism, paganism, or cosmic pessimism?
I don't really consider MetallicA a heavy metal band.
The majority of Metallica's work is considered thrash or speed metal. Maiden, Sabbath and Motorhead are heavy metal...
I don't either. I mean I guess they have some stuff that probably qualifies. Generally, if the song is pleasant to listen to in any way whatsoever, it's probably not metal.

Oh my god, I love metal. eff off with your judgement. I see your judgement and raise you a "eff off". You've probably got other problems to worry about. At least I hope you do, otherwise that basement you're living in at your mom's house may need some cleaning, mainly the urine bottles and pizza hut boxes.
Anyway, here are a few of my favorite songs/albums/artists atm. They may or may not be "metal" again: eff the eff off. These also expand frequently.
-Everything from Meshuggah. I've got the entire discography including Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects album "Sol Niger Within". Yes I actually bought it. Way too much money. One of my favorites from them for years:

-TerresacT. I liked the original band better (linked).

-One of the best instrumentals I've ever heard.

I could literally go on and on and on. I've got the Lamb of God discography, Mudvayne discography (L.D. 50 is one of my favorite albums of all time and probably their best), Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Opeth, Textures, After the Burial, Born of Osiris, etc. etc. etc. etc. (all discographies).
People think I'm depressed or some crap when I crank this aforementioned pure gold, I just shake my head and laugh.

I like this one from Opeth - Cusp of Eternity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHq9yMXw3iA
It's on my driving playlist for the soul sucking drive to Parsons each month. Keeps the kids mellow in the back seat.

in no particular order
Holy Diver (LOOKOUT!)
Screaming for Vengeance (You think you've private lives. Think nothing of the kind.)
-
Greatest grammy injustice, Jethro Tull or Tenacious D?
-
well that's a pretty rough ridin' stupid question
-
No, it's not at all.
-
One of those bands utilizes a rough ridin' flute, for almost every track, and the other won with a rough ridin' cover album.
-
You have to consider the albums that lost to answer that question. And once you do you'll realize it's a stupid question

I've been taking it into account the whole time, I still disagree with your flippant dismissal of the question. Once More 'Round the Sun is not ...And Justice for All, you are correct in that, but it is still a very good album, from a very good band. They were disrespected on the same level that Metallica was. :don'tcare:

It's like Shakespeare in love vs SPR

This reminds me there are some horribly overrated Metallica songs.
-
that's an awful, awful rough ridin' list.
-
one isn't one and this list is full of bullshit
-
How is St. Anger ranked that low?
