looks like the term "Metal" casts a really wide net.

this is going to be CONTROVERSIAL

When Metalhead and I discussed this, that was a major issue. We'll see what he has to say!

Slipknot will probably be just outside the top ten.

Stevesie, Puni, RD you all have valid points.

some may disagree with the efficiency of these research methods, but I'm going with bands first, in alphabetical order, and then their albums, in chronological order. So I started with Amon Amarth Once Sent from the Golden Hall and I'll work my way through from there. Cannibal Corpse stands a solid chance, though.

Deftones are incredible live. I held Chino up one time while he screamed his soul out. When is this concert? I thought OKC was the closest they were coming.

a fun DYK:  in high school i worked at the arcade in the topeka mall, and i was working one night and there was a bag left on a bench outside the store.  i let it sit there for like 2 hours and decided no one was going to pick it up, so i went and snatched it and VDoP was in the bag.  this is the only reason i have VDoP on cd while i don't really like pantera.

nu-metal was like 5 years of absolute garbage music in the early 2000s, but on the bright side there were a few good songs/albums to come out of there.

disturbed
slipknot
godsmack
system of a down
drowning pool
etc.

the thing about nu-metal is, anybody in the world can play guitar in a nu-metal band. just drop that crap into drop C and put your middle finger across the lower three strings and move around for about 2 minutes and 58 seconds and you've got yourself a catchy nu-metal track

What's Norma Jean, The Chariot, and old Atreyu considered? Because it's nothing like Slipknot and the other nu-metal examples that you guys are giving.

If you are gonna do a top 10 metal thread, you might as well include all declared forms of metal so you can spot all the dweebs who listened to avenge sevenfold.

oh my god just, GAH

this feels like a safe place to admit I love rammstein and would nominate it into a top ten list

is it metal?

oh man, saw rammstein on the '98 family values tour (orgy, rammstein, ice cube, limp bizkit and korn, are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!  :excited:) and they were really rough ridin' awesome.  the lead singer ripped off his cod piece and had a giant dildo hanging out and started jerking it off and then when he uh... finished he it started spraying stuff all over the crowd from the dildo.  found out later it was spraying out peppermint shnapps!

atreyu is like founding father of nu-metal. can't speak to the other ones you listed

Well, Slipknot's first album came out in 1999 and Atreyu's first album came out in 2002, so that can't be true.

oh my god george washington was born in 1732 and thomas jefferson was born in 1743 so they both definitely can't be founding fathers i guess

i think the real question here is: who the eff cares?

hey, go post some gifs in another thread or something.

Generally I don't like top 10 metal lists unless they're sub-genre specific. Are you analyzing albums in terms of how they hold up today? Are you giving consideration to the influence they had on future bands/albums? Either way, it's really hard to say album x is "better" than album y. Then you have fans, specifically of metal, who have issues with whether or not album z is even metal in the first place, due to there not being a clear line between metal and hard rock or whatever.

Most top 10 all time lists are full of Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Slayer, and Metallica, with multiple albums from these bands in the top 10/15, which just seems masturbatory to me. Yeah, those bands made some great and influential music, but really, did any of their albums do anything earth-shattering that their other albums didn't touch on? Definitely needs to be a rule for not including the same band more than once unless you can point to two or more of their albums and see them as being truly unique.

Quite the task you've put upon yourself, Metalhead  :runaway:

The bass that's there is following the riffs so you can't pick it out at all. Apparently Cliff had the parts for it down mentally so Jason just had to kind of come in and throw something together since there was no recording of it. Would love to hear how it could have sounded.

Puppets has to be in the top 3 or it's not a valid list. At least one Lamb of God album must make the top 10 too. The other eight will be interesting to see. As mentioned above there are so many types of metal that it's hard to rank. Hats off to metalhead for taking on this enormous task.

i'm not sure "alternative" is what we're looking for (at least as it is commonly used) but i definitely wouldn't call it "metal" either.  is "hard alt prog rock" a category?

I believe that the established test for genres is whether or not it is listed on a label in a Hastings store. If we apply this test, then no, no it is not...

Is Lordi inside or outside the top 50? I like them, but I cant tell if they are joke-metal or just european.

Is gwar in the top 50? i would probably put them well outside, but you can't argue with how influential they are to me.

Tool is suing Smile Empty for sounding identical to them. "[Smile Empty Soul]'s debut album sounds exactly like 'Aenima', from the first track to the last track. Ask our fans, no one sounds like us. No one." says one of their members.

So our team did some research. It turns out Tool was correct in their assessment. When we compared the first song of each album to each other, our findings were irrefutable. It was the exact same song. Then we had our researchers study the second song on each album. You'll never believe what they found.

"They were the same, too" one researcher says. "As were the third song, the fourth song, and so forth".

We're not taking sides in this case. We're just saying don't be surprised if Tool has a lot more money after all of this is presented in court.

Tool makes complex music for intelligent individuals. They are their own genre and imo one of the greatest bands of all time. From deep philosophical and spiritual lyrics to Danny Carey simultaneously using 2 or 3 conflicting rhythms on drums to their amazing visual arts/videos (incorporating Alex Grey's psychedelic artwork) to their insane live shows, make Tool so great and add to their mystique.

Hey guys, I'm back with some great news! I was showing my friend the new awesome Trust Company album. I showed him the first song and he asked, "Stevesie, was that Tool?" and I said, "no friend, that was Trust Company!" He muttered, "huh" and we went back to listening. I showed him the second song and he said, "now Stevesie, that was DEFINITELY Tool, wasn't it?" and I said once again, "no friend, that was Trust Company." So I showed him the third song and he said, "Stevesie you have to be pulling my leg, this is Tool!" and I told him, "wrong again, friend. Trust Company!" So I go on to show him the fourth song and he says, well you guessed it, he thought it was Tool yet another time! And that's where I'll end my story because I think it's quite clear what my point is.

Yes I know they aren't "metal" but more of a hardcore-hybrid, but when it comes to heavy music those 2 are the best

this feels like a safe place to admit I love rammstein and would nominate it into a top ten list

is it metal?

oh man, saw rammstein on the '98 family values tour (orgy, rammstein, ice cube, limp bizkit and korn, are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!

Saw Rammstien with Slipknot and System of a Down in 2001. Abe's friend got backstage passes because he was on a street team (omg remember street teams?!?). We ate salmon with Clown from Slipknot and then watched Rammstein from the side of the stage. Right after they got done they went into their dressing room with six 6'2", blonde, blue eyed German girls.

Also of note, Serj from SOAD had his own dressing room that said a huge sign on the door "NOBODY ALLOWED IN UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY SERJ". Abe took a peek while nobody was around. Nothing but pillows, candles, and a huge plate of cocaine.

Some more in no particular order (without repeating any band):

Portal - Outre', Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Ehnahre - The Man Closing Up, Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire, Bolt Thrower - ...for Victory,
Deathspell Omega - Paracletus, Thantifaxath - Thantifaxath, Demilich - Nespithe

I could go on but I'll stop there.

If I was interested in good singing I would listen to opera or choral music not metal.

There are some pretty good female growlers too.  Check out Derkéta - In Death We Meet or Funerus - Reduced to Sludge

Anyway, K-State won today  :ksu:

Just look at the picture above. Who looks more heavy metal to you? Well, apparently you were not a member of the Recording Academy circa 1988. The first instance of a category for Hard Rock/Metal, the award was given to the flute-tastic Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave over Metallica's And Justice For All. Fans (and even some audience members) were rightly outraged, though Tull's record label tried to make light of the faux pas by placing a Billboard ad that read, "The flute is a heavy, metal instrument." When Metallica later won a Grammy for 1991's Metallica, they thanked Jethro Tull for not release a competing album.

I wouldn't go but your tastes are much different than mine.

They are more or less ripping off early to mid 90's Bathory and just putting it in a slick, over-produced format.  I guess what I'm saying is that they are ok but not on my must see list.

I watched Metallica's Through the Never today. The concert footage is pretty cool. They've added some really awesome effects since I saw them close to a decade ago. The separate movie portion doesn't make any sense, but there are some cool scenes I guess. It would probably be awesome to watch with PED's.

Hey bud, maybe you shouldn't post in this thread until you get your list done, okay?

The list has been done for a while, I just haven't felt like writing a blog post to go with it. Anyway, I'll post the list just for you.

Here is my list of my ten favorite metal albums. It is important to note, that this is only a list of my ten favorite metal albums, not a list of the ten "greatest metal albums of all time". There are a lot of bands that I listen to on a regular basis that didn't make it on the list, simply because they don't put out complete/ entire albums that I enjoy (Iron Maiden, Motorhead, High on Fire, Slayer, Sepultura and Weedeater, to name a few).

I remember trying to force myself to like St. Anger after I walked up-hill both ways to Hastings to buy it. "Oh, no Kirk solos?  Well that's... I guess they're trying to do something..different..."  St. Anger made me fall out of love with MetallicA.

I don't either. I mean I guess they have some stuff that probably qualifies. Generally, if the song is pleasant to listen to in any way whatsoever, it's probably not metal.

I guess it's obvious by now but this is a no brainer. A friend of mind once told me that he owned this album for months before he listened past the first track. He was afraid the other songs weren't going to be as good as "Battery." Fortunately, he was an idiot.

generally it's because people can't get it through their thick skulls that load and reload weren't metal albums. I really like reload. fixxxer was a favorite tune of young mh and his junior high buds, and might have been the track playing during the opening credits of a stop-action lego movie they made.

I'm not an expert on Metallica by any stretch. In fact I had to youtube half the songs he was talking about as he went through the list. The writer was spot on with the NWOBHM style early, and basically everything he said that I saw. Agreed with laughing at people who say they sold out on the self-titled, and the grunge comments as well.

Their are few things worse than "fans" bemoaning the evolution of a musician(s).

I'm actually at my parent's house tonight. I'll see if I have it. One of the other guys might have ended up with it, though. We were really into Kung Pow! at the time, so there might even be some extra scenes with the camera focused on a muted TV, playing kung fu movies while we dub them over with our own dialogue.

eff, I had completely forgot about all of that until earlier today.

The majority of Metallica's work is considered thrash or speed metal. Maiden, Sabbath and Motorhead are heavy metal...

(Disclaimer: I haven't read any of this thread)

Oh my god, I love metal. eff off with your judgement. I see your judgement and raise you a "eff off". You've probably got other problems to worry about. At least I hope you do, otherwise that basement you're living in at your mom's house may need some cleaning, mainly the urine bottles and pizza hut boxes.

Anyway, here are a few of my favorite songs/albums/artists atm. They may or may not be "metal" again: eff the eff off. These also expand frequently.

-Everything from Meshuggah. I've got the entire discography including Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects album "Sol Niger Within". Yes I actually bought it. Way too much money. One of my favorites from them for years:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc98u-eGzlc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc98u-eGzlc)

-This band. Their latest album. Just everything is great. Loving this song (which is actually two different ones on the album).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z38EuVhXzZ8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z38EuVhXzZ8)

-TerresacT. I liked the original band better (linked).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGCn6g95PBY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGCn6g95PBY)

-One of the best instrumentals I've ever heard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ipv_l7KoSI
 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ipv_l7KoSI)
-Kids these days...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jhZB73IawI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jhZB73IawI)

-Literally a million plays. I love these guys

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih_WgC3ZC_E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih_WgC3ZC_E)

-Hipster pick?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jWA1eJjAzg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jWA1eJjAzg)

I could literally go on and on and on. I've got the Lamb of God discography, Mudvayne discography (L.D. 50 is one of my favorite albums of all time and probably their best), Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Opeth, Textures, After the Burial, Born of Osiris, etc. etc. etc. etc. (all discographies).

People think I'm depressed or some crap when I crank this aforementioned pure gold, I just shake my head and laugh.

I've been taking it into account the whole time, I still disagree with your flippant dismissal of the question. Once More 'Round the Sun is not ...And Justice for All, you are correct in that, but it is still a very good album, from a very good band.
