Dlew, are you familiar with how much crap you have to carry around during your first year of law school?

I've forgotten by now if this bag is what you're going to use on a daily basis or if it's just for a handul of Summer 2013 internship interviews and other special occasions and that you've got a regular schoolbag.  If it's the latter, never mind.

It's the latter.  My mom is dead set on getting me this for graduation.  So I might as well get a cool one.

It you work in technology, backpacks are common, if not the norm.

If you work in technology consulting, and you travel, backpacks are essential.

I've noticed a trend with east coast attorneys having the most beat up POS leather cases I've ever seen.  It appears to be a show of experience or something.  You have a $5k pair of glasses on and your briefcase/bag looks like a 40 year old catchers mitt.  I imagine everyone who shows up with a brand new bag must get mocked as a n00b or something.

It's like a hardhat on a construction site.

you better have a bunch of stickers yo

if you were going to grad school for something like history or int'l relations like me with a bunch of weirdos and not worried about impressing any of them, i'd say go with the backpack for functionality. however, since you'll be in law school and not grad school, there will be exponentially less weird people. you might even want to impress them! it's obviously all about how you look and a nice leather messenger bag will do the trick.

I once brought 2 five dollar footlongs into AT&T Park in a backpack once.  They allow that there.  Very liberal.

Makes sense. Though I enjoy the authentic warm wallet mark on my jeans, it is very undesirable in some nice pants. I suppose you could keep your wallet in your jacket as well, but to each their own!

One with a kinder wording:

While yes, it would be very weird for one to carry their wallet around in their attachè, it could also serve as a nice alternative to keeping the wallet in your pants pocket. I enjoy the warn look that develops in the back pockets of my jeans. I would never want to make the fashion statement of having one on my pants pocket, however. Some people could use their attachè, while others may prefer their jacket pocket, or possibly the front pocket of their pants. Either one display a keen eye for the small details that I can support.

I second Trim's advice.  Don't let your mom drop a bunch of money on something you'll never use.  It'll collect dust for 3 years and then you'll want something different by the time you get out of law school anyway.  Have her get something that you'll actually be able to use for the next 3 years and then she can get you a super pimp bag when you graduate law school.

I'm getting one.  The point of this thread isn't "debate the merits of Dlew12 getting purchasing an attaché, briefcase, or messenger bag," it was, "Dlew12 is getting an attaché, briefcase, or messenger bag, which kind should he get?"

You should go with a big east-coast lawyer type bag and spend the next few years really beating the crap out of it so that by the time you get out of law school you will already be able to look down upon all of those noobs with brand new bags.

Like a center fielder molding that perfect glove, or _fan folding his favorite curved bill, dlew will spend the next several years beating the ever living crap out of his leather bag so he can hit the courtroom looking like a boss.

Look, if you guys want to wear pants that are so tight you can't fit a wallet in them, be my guess.  Skinny jeans are in, I guess.
