In a city where there is an abundance of scorers at the high school level, superior point guards who understand the game are at a premium.
Shane Southwell had an in-home from Kansas State
To find a talented PG at the division one level, one college knew exactly where to go. To the home of Shane Southwell, point guard for Rice HS in Manhattan, NY. The senior spoke with NYCHoops.net about his recent in-home visit and about the three schools that made his final cut.
Last Thursday, Southwell and his mother received an in-home visit from Kansas State. "Coach Frank Martin and assistant coach Dalonte Hill came to see me," said Southwell. According to Southwell, the visit, which lasted about two hours, went, "Real well." "They talked to me about coming in to play right away and about me playing either the point or combo guard," said Southwell. Also present at the in-home visit was Rice HS assistant coach Dwayne Mitchell who concurred that the visit went well. Southwell added that he will be taking an official visit to Kansas State on the 25th of September.
When asked had he cut his list down, Southwell responded, "I'm only looking at Kansas State, Providence and South Carolina."
Southwell says that the primary factor in his final decision will be his playing in the point guard position. "Distance is not a factor for me. The opportunity to play point is important."
With the high school season fast approaching for the defending Federation champion Rice Raiders, Southwell will be playing hard for the repeat but will also be honing his skills for the next level. "I want to play the point, full time this season and work on being more aggressive in my scoring."
As to when he will decide on a college, Southwell says that it will be in early November.
