To all you working out types
« on: January 10, 2011, 06:44:42 AM »
I have a question... I'm thinking about attempting a marathon in November. When I was in the army, I ran like a jackrabbit, buuut, since then EMAW has happened, KSU drinkfest, married, kids yadda yadda yadda. But, now I'm just passed the waking up all the time at night and I am feeling rested on a regular basis. So I think I'm ready. What's a good prep time for a person line me? Nonsmoker, nondrinker (for the most part) but I'm 6'7" 270 lb... so I'm a pretty big dude. I think at maximum right now I could run a 10K, but prolly no more. I've read some stuff on the interwebs, but I wanted some "real" opinions from you all. FWIW, it's the San Antonio rock 'n' roll marathon and there's music playing the entire time you are running by various live bands along the way.
Anyway, let's hear it... tia

your weight is an issue,  i would be worried about is the pounding your knees are going to deal with while training to get up to 26.2

get the weight down and begin your cardio.

Yeah I would try for two Novembers from now. Not saying you can't do it, but I don't think it would be to enjoyable.

Somewhere RP just creamed himself thinking about a 6'7 270 lb LT that could run a 10k playing for the cats

Tommy at the least you need 12 weeks to prep for a marathon.  The best way to start is to spend 2 weeks running about 25 minutes probably 4 to 5 times a week.  Every 2 weeks bump your time up by 10 minutes.  Don't worry about how far you go just run the amount of time required.  As you get further along you will add a long run 1 day a week.  Usually a 2 hour run.  Never run an entire 26.2 miles while training.  20 miles should really be your max when training for a marathon.

I ran a marathon once. Was not worth it. Would not do again.

a ran a 200 once at a jv highschool track meet just to see how i would do. felt really sick and tired for a good ten minutes after. a marathon would be way, way worse than that. i also don't recommend.

Have you considered something more low impact? Maybe step aerobics? You could just put the video on a loop and do it for like 8 hours. Then, sandpaper your nipples and you'll pretty much have that marathon experience you're after.

This, christ your knees are going to take a beating. I'm with 'clams. worry about getting down to like 230 or so for someone 6'7" first, take some of the pressure off your joints.
