Dr. Krop vs. DwyerThe final game of the event matched two teams widely considered to be the best in South Florida. Dr. Krop of Miami is a leading candidate to return to Lakeland out of Miami in 6A while Dwyer from Palm Beach Gardens is the favorite in 5A. Dwyer came in a bit undermanned as 6’5 senior Jacoby Brissett, a member of the City of Palms All-Tournament team and MVP of the Kingdom of the Sun tournament, was in San Antonio for the Under Armor All-American Football Game. That didn’t seem to matter as Dwyer had a seven point lead after one quarter of play and a ten point lead at the half. In the third, Krop emerged from the locker room to outscore Dwyer 26-14 to take a two point, 48-46 with one quarter remaining to play. With no Brissett and three point ace Victor Adams struggling from the field, Dwyer struggled to stay with Krop. The guard play for Krop was able to keep control of the basketball and knock down foul shots as the game wound down. Krop maintained their lead throughout the final period and finished with a tough 69-61 victory. The intriguing match-up for the game was the inside battle between two top juniors. Krop’s 6’9 junior Tyrone Haugton is long and athletic but looks small when standing next to 6’10 Joell James from Dwyer. Both players went to work on the block against each other and fortunately the refs let them play.Haughton finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. James’ size and ability to muscle him during his shot kept Haughton from getting into an offensive rhythm but he kept at it, hitting a jump hook in the lane and being the recipient of a couple of drop offs from guards that allowed free access to the rim. James tallied 14 points and 9 rebounds. He also fouled out late in the contest. Very few in high school can move James off the block once he establishes himself. James continues his rapid improvement at the offensive end, showing off a ten foot jumper off the glass and finishing with contact. Both James and Haughton will be chased by a series of high-major schools this July.

Those kids are like 10 games into their sophomore years. Bigs often take a little while to get things going at this level.
