just make sure you're not paying a premium.  paypal I think takes like 2% or 3% and the payee usually passes that cost onto the payor.  just make sure it's not cheaper to pay him another way or you're essentially buying points at a pretty expensive premium.

Guys, I'm pretty sure I just did something stupid.  The AA Visa lady offered me $85 credit to not cancel.  She said it would post sometime on my next two statements so May or June.  My account renewal date is June something so the annual fee would have probably hit around the same time.  I just cancelled.  I thought it was a trap. 

Also, I almost lol'd at the BA/United "specialist."  She went through her standard script for the BA cancel and then mentioned something about the United Card.  I said, "Oh yeah, I want to cancel that one too."  She sounded really sad and then proceeded with the exact same script from the first one.  Something like, "Oh no, well I am very sorry to hear that... also...".  I mean it was word for word.  Not surprising but def. funny.

Not a trap, but it doesn't really matter either way.  If you were going to churn it, you'd have had to cancel it within another 6 months or so anyway.

At most, you might have cost yourself free Priority Access and checked bags on any AA flights you take in the next 8 months until the churn is complete.  (Assuming you're not already Gold or above)

as of a few months ago you could book 4 nights at those cat 10 properties without using an AXON or GLON award for 200k. Using an AXON they were only 145k. Now, even using an AXON, it's 300k.

yeah, definitely doesn't make sense to book the elite hotels for a vacation anymore but I still contend it's the best program for mid range hotels simply because of the churnability of the cards. there's still a lot of good cat 5-7 hilton properties.  staying at the hilton los cabos for 5 nights next week for 160 points with the new 5th night free deal.

like, i just applied for a chase sapphire preferred kind of just for fun and they said they need more time to review my application.

not really. maybe a point or two for a short time. call chase right now at 1-888-245-0625 and ask them what their problem is. usually that's all it takes to get approved.

So, I just applied for the AA Visa though a link on flyertalk.  It's the first time I'm using a link for an expired offer (got approved obv).  I know that it says exactly on the site that it won't mention the offer anywhere and to just have faith and stuff.  So, yeah, pretty stupid post so far, but hey, "It's K_M when does he not have a stupid post?" I just need someone to make me feel better about it.

As for the link, I had it on my work computer, I just searched "best credit card offers" and it took me to a boardingarea.com site which then brought me to a flyertalk thread with the links. I'm about 99% sure SD or someone posted the flyertalk link somewhere in this thread, good luck finding it.

However, you all have convinced me that I have been a complete idiot by not taking advantage of these free miles. I was just approved for the unitedexplorer for 50,000 pts plus the 5k for an additional user.

I will say that when I saw the crazy amount they approved me for, it reminded me of the time that my then current CC company called me up and wanted to raise our credit to $100,000. I asked them, "What do you think I am going to use my cc for? To buy a house?"

Oh, I am still an idiot, just not a complete idiot. I'd rather spend the two minutes it would take to get them to raise my credit doing something more worthwhile, like bbs'n.

But seriously, what would additional credit actually do for me? I don't have "Beems type money," but we are setting pretty good and they already gave me a pretty significant amount of credit. What is the reason for wanting more credit? Or, is this really just a test you have placed in front of me?

your credit score is partially based on the ratio of credit you are using to the credit available to you.  in theory*, the higher your score, the more free stuff banks will give you to apply for their credit cards.



*- in reality, raising or lowering your limit on one card probably doesn't impact your ability to rape banks at all, but still.
