re. moose, katkid had an interesting if true post about him midseason.  it was about the stats of a mean or median third baseman.  they were shockingly horrible.  i think a lot of people, like myself, became accustomed to the stats of players who augmented their natural talent with science.  it is hard to recalibrate.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=3b&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=400&type=1&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=10,d

Moose was bad.  Let's agree on that, but 3b was bad too.  That is an underrated talking point about the offense that people seem overly skeptical about its improvement just because they are rightly skeptical about the pitching.  Ater the top 10 in MLB you are talking really mediocre players.  It isn't just the Royals, it is everyone at 3b.  Even if Moustakas just gets back to last year (.242/.296 OBP/.700 OPS, 20 HR, 34 2b) he will be league average.  He doesn't need to have some break out season.  Just be league average and the offense will improve.

Let's look at the 3b by OPS tiers (min. 400PA):

1.000
Miguel Cabrera

.900
David Wright

.850
Josh Donaldson
Adrian Beltre

.800
Chris Johnson
Ryan Zimmerman

.750
Pedro Alvarez
Juan Uribe
Kyle Seager
Pablo Sandoval
Martin Prado

.700
Chase Headley
Manny Machado
Michael Young
Todd Frazier
David Freese
Brett Lawrie
Nolan Arenado
Alberto Callaspo
Trevor Plouffe

.650
Mark Reynolds
Conor Gillaspie
Matt Dominguez
Mike Moustakas

.600
Placido Polanco
Jeff Keppinger

.550
Yuni Betancourt

So assuming we don't retain Erv, how much salary are we dumping this offseason?

Erv $12m
Hoch $4.56
Chen $4.5
Carroll $3.75
Kottaras $1

Anyone else? And what do we do with Guthrie? He's owed an extra $6m next year

We better make a qualifying offer on Erv or I'm going to flip crap.

Well you are going to need to pay Guthrie that awful contract because that is what an MLB contract says.  It is guaranteed money.

Crow, hoch, and a bunch of other guys are due for FA or arbitration so they will spend a decent chunk of that money just standing pat with Guthrie's increase.

They should be make a qualifying offer to Erv but they should also hope he gets more somewhere else.

I'm not going to bother to read the last 8 pages.  I'm sure it's full of incredibly insightful baseball opinions but whatever.  I'll just be nice and to the point.  This was a very successful season for the Royals and there's no reason to think they can't build on it and be a playoff team next year.

The Reds:  Zeal to go beyond where they've been.

The Royals:  A tepid, timid step to actually accomplish something

wait are people suggesting that yost should be fired because he uses weird lineups and strange tactical decisions in favor of dusty baker?  because that'd be a very funny suggestion.

Bobby is a psycho. His one year in Boston proved that. Ned is now entrenched for a couple of years. I hope it works.

to be fair, mocat, he did say the LCS. the rich teams are all in the LCS and beat the poors in the LDS.
