So, Ned, true to form you leave another starter in who gives up a bunch of runs early--you finally pull Shields in the 4th when he's surrendered seven runs and left the bases loaded. Was Mendoza really the best you had coming out of the pen in that situation? By the time's he's out of the inning, it's 10-1.

Mendoza was the only pitcher in the pen who hadn't pitched the last two days. He had to have his starter go deep, and if he came out early Mendoza was the only option who could eat up lots of pitches


Ned's a loser, but this isn't exactly a "manager blew it" type of night.

Rather than bring Mendoza in at that point, I think it would have been better to bring in someone more reliable to get out of the jam, then bring the rested Mendoza in the next inning. By the time the decision was made, the game was close to being out of reach...and ultimately proved to be 'way out of reach. Ned doesn't deserve all the blame...it's just another example of him staying too long with a starter who clearly doesn't have it in the given game.
