Only 11.5 games out of the Wildcard. If this was an 80's/90's baseball movie this is where the lovable losers make their run to win the pennant

Get Duffy and Paulino back in June/July for spot starts.  Decent I guess.

One of the worst in the league unless FA TBD is a legit #1.

Can we throw Odorizzi into the mix?  :dunno:

It's not like the Royals are ever going to have the best rotation in the league, or even top 5.  That said, Dayton has done a decent job of getting a solid group of 2's and 3's that, as a group, could be above average...Throw in a legitimate "Ace" type, and you have a very solid rotation given how our offense should be able to score some runs for the foreseeable future, and our defense and bullpen should each continue to be very good.

The thing that I am scared of is that the organization sees what Guthrie has done the last 4 or 5 outings, signs him to an extension and assumes that he will be that "Ace" type.  Guthrie has the stuff to be a very good pitcher, but he's not the answer when looking for a legitimate ace.

What is the latest on Odorizzi?

I stopped paying attention after the post All Star game slide....

Has he been doing good in AAA? September Call up?

2-0 in his last two starts with a 0.64 ERA, 6 SO, 4 BB and a .125 Avg Against.

On the year at Omaha: In 16 games started he is 10-2 with a 2.80 ERA, 77 SO, 35 BB and a .259 Avg Against.

http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=543606

In other words, he still looks good.  As for a September call up...I would bet that he gets called up at some point, but it's really anybody's guess when it comes to this organization.

Paulino: If he keeps up like he pitched this season, legitimate #2 to #1, but probably more a #3 or #4. Coming off TJ surgery.
Guthrie: #2 is his ceiling, but given his history and age, probably #3 or #4 next year.
Duffy: Probably #2 at best. Coming off TJ surgery.
Mendoza: #3 maybe.  His rate and park adjusted stats aren't that good.

Hochever is what he is, a back end guy.
Chen is 35 years old

We have Oderizzi and who else waiting in the wings?  I think we really need to sign 2 starters, one a top of the rotation guy, one in the middle, if we want to have any hope of approaching contention by the time Duffy and Paulino get back, and who knows if / how long until they will be effective again.

I agree with you that I'd like to see us bolster our rotation with both a #1 type AND another middle of the rotation kind of guy. But do we really think Glass will shell out the type of money necessary for that to happen?

What I'm saying is that I think we need to focus on finding that Ace, and anything beyond that is just icing.  Judging by the last couple of weeks (granted, it's a very small sample size), I think we do have a group of guys in place that truly have the potential* to be a serviceable rotation for a winning team.

Key word here is potential

Great outing by both pitchers. A duel of #1 draft picks. Sadly, this is just a glimpse of what Hochevar coulda/shoulda/woulda been. Price is what we all imagined Hoch would be on draft day in 2006. Thus, just another depressing reality of being a Royals fan. At least this gem put his ERA below 5 for the season  :flush:
