My thoughts....
Rios -- I am fine that he is a very average Defender, but like FAN talked about, he has to be a decent hitter with some power then. I am even able to look past those first 10 games back from injury when he really struggled. But even since then, he is hitting .253 and only 1 of his 19 hits are for extra bases. We need to see .275-280 with 30% of his hits going for extra bases
Dyson-- the first 1/4 of the year, he wasn't good. He was at .180/.219 (ave/OBP). The next 1/4 he has been much more productive in limited chances. 15 for his last 35.
Orlando -- very likable guy and like Dyson, an above ave defender. His first 3 weeks, he hit .289 with 5 3B's. Next 5 weeks his Ave was .209 and had 0 BBs or 3B.
I don't think Orlando will be here long, unless an injury occurs. I do feel like Dyson needs more PT now that he is getting on base much better than before. It's not gonna be 60/40, but Rios should be resting 2 of the 6/7 games per week until he proves himself more. Ned isn't gonna rest him more than that, but resting him once every 3 weeks shouldn't be happening.
No way at this point do we consider Rios option for next year. At this point, it's clear Dayton took a shot and missed on this signing. But I'm glad we only are obligated for the 1 year. He took a shot on someone with more pop in his bat over an Aoki. ChiSox took a chance on M Cabreara (someone we were rumored to be interested in). His .260 ave, .335 Slug isn't living up to a 3year 42M contract.
I don't believe they would have signed a 2nd starting pitcher to a 3-4 year deal had they not signed Rios. Their payroll would just have been lower this year with a cheaper RF. IMO I don't believe spending that extra money for 1 year on Rios will deter Dayton from looking for a good option for a RF next year.
