Kat Kid in this thread feels exactly like me when I condescendingly encourage my ku friends about football. Except ku football didn't lose the national championship on a game winning field goal last year.

Kat Kid ought to pay real close attention to the Phillies because that's what the Tigers will be around 2017
I'd cheer this post on, but it kinda equates to LHC Bill Snyder will die soon kinda stuff.  :frown:

Well we've won 7 World series games since 1984, they've won 1. They are aging and will have crap to show for it.

Pretty much every team gets pretty bad after a really good stretch. You have to be the Yankees or Red Sox to sustain success in MLB.

Agreed. And we accomplished more last year than they have since 1984 so this era of Tiger Baseball will be remembered by no one outside of Detroit.

I just hope we aren't one and done. The Volquez signing gives us a chance at the playoffs, but the Central is going to be tougher this year. If we can get into the playoffs, this roster is built for it. I'm just not quite convinced we have the rotation to get back.

I'm not either, but I still think a bunch of our guys have not had their career year.

You absolutely do not.  If anything, the last 15 years has proven that you can be successful without a monster payroll.

The Red Sox have never sustained success. Maybe the Cards?

Exactly, cf3. If the career years come, it may be a franchise career year.

Guys, our roster today is better than our roster 2 months ago. Edinson Volquez is our #4 or #5 starter. That's amazing.  Shields was the perfect stop gap until our system pitchers were ready to step in.

Dayton Moore is a rough ridin' stud.  This is so awesome. Just think what might happen if Hosmer and Moose actually step forward this year.

If I could put it together, it would be:

1. Ventura
2. Duffy
3. Volquez
4. Vargas
5. Guthrie

Duffy is the number 2 if we get old Duffy back. End of 2014 Duffy doesn't really even belong in the rotation, though.

Jason Vargas, who started game 1 of the ALDS, does not become a #4 because you signed Edinson Volquez. If he's your #4, it's because Ventura and Duffy are 1 and 2, and Volquez beats him out for the 3. I think It's Ventura-Vargas-Duffy (2/3 are interchangeable if Duffy comes out of spring training in form) Volquez-JGuts.

Nobody gives J-Guts any credit. He had a better year than Vargas. They are very similar pitchers, though.

It's not about giving him credit, I love Guthrie. But his role is to be the #5 man in the rotation.

I was super scared they would attempt to make Davis or Hoch a starter. That would be v dumb.

Also, now we have great trade pieces if the season goes bad for July. I mean, we could get some good prospects for Hoch or Davis come that time. I really like the approach of only giving Free Agents 2 years also. It means we're not stuck with huge contracts for old dudes down the road.

This.  There's not a lot of risk taken with any of these moves.  So are we done now in FA?
