While we're all talking here, can we cut loose the fantasy that we're constrained by a fixed budget, such that $2 million here makes it so we can't spend $2 million there? This is big boy business, not your mom's check book.

Guys, I'm tempted to get FSD started on OPS. Never met anyone who didn't like it as a stat.

Like Scotch, kind of have to develop a taste for it. Then you're hooked.

Calling it a statistic is a misnomer. It's two statistics added together. Why don't we evaluate pitchers by adding their WHIP and K/9 together (call it WHINE)? Oh yeah, because that's dumb, we can just look at them separately and get a better picture of what's actually going on.

Sounds like putting completion %, yards, TDs, etc. together for an overall QB rating. Seems like both the cumulative stat and the individual stats can both give a pretty decent picture. :dunno:

Seems like batting average is stupid. It's just a combination of hits and at bats. Look at them separately and you can see what's going on without having to combine them.

Well that wouldn't work because you want WHIP to be low and k/9 to be high. You need it where both stats have the same goal, being high or low. WHINE is a great name tho

What does OPS Give us a picture of?

OBP tells us how frequently someone gets on base. Slugging tells us how many bases a hitter averages per plate appearance (power metric). Adding them together, while duplicating many of the same box numbers, tells us that a player is either kind of good at both or really good at one or the other.  It serves no independent purpose.

assuming a 50 innings-pitched minimum:
Wade Davis was the biggest whiner on the Royals this year with a 14.48 WHINE
Aaron Crow like never whined at all (6.48 WHINE)

You just did, idiot.

It was meant to be demonstrative only, not serious,  but maybe we've stumbled on to something. CF3 made the obvious observation that you want whip low and k/9 high. Perhaps we take some random constant (12 or 15) and subtract k/9 from it. Now the best result is a low number. Statistical diety Bill James uses random constants in his WAR calculation, why can't we?

Another approach would be to divide k/9 by whip, such that the higher the number the better. It's just two stats plus arithmetic, any idiot can make this up.
